Im sick of my English mate...
...bragging about how good the England cricket team is and how funny it is us Welsh dont even have an international team
I know he only means it as a bit of banter but it is stupid that we dont have a team. Scotland and Ireland do so I dont see the problem us having one. Surley with Wales having a decent cricket history having an international team will only inspire youngsters to play the game and create some good development

Re: Im sick of my English mate...
There has been a wales team, however the standard was so poor they could barely compete with county teams and therefore left the county tournaments, Wales do not hold any standing with the ICC.
I believe a wales team play in the european championships or something, doesnt help that most Welsh people see playing for Glamorgan as the biggest prospect and because of Wales' status they cannot play due to county contracts.

theres touch and go maybe 11 irish county players? Scottish players? my point being due to Wales not having an ICC standing due to coming under England the Welsh prospective county players have no interest in a Welsh national team with Glamorgan being (in a way) seen as playing for Wales.

If there was a Welsh XI this is the best side I can come up with
1) Mike Powell
2) Gareth Rees
3) Will Bragg
4) Jamie Dalrymple
5) Geraint Jones
6) Mark Wallace
7) James Harris
8) Robert Croft
9) David Harrison
10) Simon Jones
11) Will Owen
1) Mike Powell
2) Gareth Rees
3) Will Bragg
4) Jamie Dalrymple
5) Geraint Jones
6) Mark Wallace
7) James Harris
8) Robert Croft
9) David Harrison
10) Simon Jones
11) Will Owen

The only way they could is if they broke away from England and made there own Cricket board.
Re: Im sick of my English mate...
thought Geraint Jones was Papa New Gineau
tbh that isn't too bad a side, compare that to the scots who get the chance to qualify for the world cup...

His parents are from Wales
Trying to get all the players I named to play would be tough though, Harris would most likely to be looking to get into the England side and at Crofts age I would be unsure if he would play either.

If Wales had a shot at the even qualifying for the world cup though would Harris etc consider wales more, with the current England team i reckon its going to be hard for him to get in

He wouldn't play for Wales though:P
Re: Im sick of my English mate...
Well, a player's natural ambition is to reach the heights of the game. Wales aren't officially recognised as a member. It's much easier for Welsh players to play for Glamorgan, then hopefully kick on to the England Lions or the even the Test squad. James Harris is in the eyes of the selectors, and both Jones's were selected in the 00's.
Whereas, to set up its own board, it would have to be officially recognised as a member and become an affiliate member, then an associate, then a full member. Some teams have been at it for years now, even trying to be an associate member. Much less effort to just try for the England team.
Cook is English? Born Gloucester, educated in Bedford, played for Essex...?

Speaking as a Welshman im not even sure a Wales cricket team would gather up to much support, i think most people are more than happy with the affiliation we have with the ECB and getting the occasional player involved.
Another to add to that list though is Tom Maynard.

You do have one and they are competing to be number one in the world.
Remind him it is the "England and Wales" cricket board.
Wales also play as a minor county in the same league as my home Cornwall.

That is a glaring obmision of a Welsh XI is to be chosen to play against England in a ODI/T20 match. In fact down the years could there have been at least 11 Welshmen who have played the Test Match format of the game for England? Does anyone know?

Re: Im sick of my English mate...
Alan Jones was a prolific opener for Glam a few decades back who played briefly and unsuccessfully for England. I imagine he was Welsh - in fact I think about 4 or 5 players in the Glam side at that time were all called Jones...
Did Tony Lewis play for England - I assume he must be properly Welsh judging from his melodious accent .

Yes he did in 1973 V New Zealand. Also what about Hugh Morris, Steve James, Steve Watkin in the 1990's, PAt Pocock, Greg Thomas in the 1980's and Jeff Jones back in the 1960's.

Good thinking, I'd forgotten about Jeff Jones.... Percy Pocock was Welsh? I hadn't realised that.
