New Irons - 9 handicap
Just looking for some advice...., getting back into the game at the moment and shooting around the 78-80 mark, need to buy a new set and a bit out of touch with decent clubs out there, price not so much of an issue - any advice would be appreciated...

Re: New Irons - 9 handicap
Best advice is get down to your local range/megastore and try out a few different ones. Clubs are horses for courses, one man's meat etc.....
Stick to the big brands and you can't go too far wrong when it comes to resale value but don't dismiss some of the 'lesser' brands such as MD, Benross and such like as they are producing some quality equipment.
Good luck

Best advice I can give is get them custom fitted whatever you decide to buy - well worth it!

Re: New Irons - 9 handicap
I would second d4s's advice that the clubs have to look right to your eye. If you think your clubs look great then you can gain a lot of confidence. There is nothing worse than standing over the ball wondering if it is your alignment or the club that feels wrong.
I would also not dismiss going second hand to begin with. Hit a few clubs at the range then go find a good second hand example on ebay.

I know this is a long shot. I have a set of irons for sale I am selling for a friend. He has turned Pro and is trying to raise funds for travel etc.
Mizuno MP-63 Irons (3-PW)
Standard length, lie and loft
S300 Dynamic Gold shafts
Mizuno Grips.
he got given this set, used them twice and didnt like them. Might aswell put it out there since I need to get rid of them

second hand set of Mizuno MP33s they will make you appreciate how good a hitter you are !! or the Nike blades !!, im still waiting for a decent 2nd hand set, callaways are for old men, taylor mades if you must have cavites !!, honestly most folk will disagree but good set of blades will make you play better & steer clear of rescues etc. no dude wants a set of old many rescues, my opinion obviously others differ !! made to measure is a mythe !! thats just my opinion and it works nae bad !!

Sorry Mclaren
This lad wants £450 for them :-/ They retail at £650 so I thought it was a fair price.

Re: New Irons - 9 handicap
excellent use of that smiley drive!
just converted to some mizuno mp32 blades myself - lovely things, so much more forgiving than my old titleist 990s - and without cc's costly pricetag!!!
seriously though ... 450 for 2nd hand clubs???? think i saw a second hand set of those last weekend for 260 - i might be wrong, they could have been something else.

Peep, blades will not make you are better player if you don't have the talent in the first place. A small sweet spot and narrow sole require the user to already be a steady player.

You are probbably right Bam Bam.
I have been told by this lad what he would like and it seemed wuite steep to me but in his defense they do look brand new. He hit each of them a few times but that is it. Alot of the sets I have seen aswell are only 4-PW.
I might have to have a word to him about the price he wants :-/

Re: New Irons - 9 handicap
I got down from 9 to 4 using an old set of Slazenger TPMs & then latterly came down from 14 to 6 using a set of MP33s. I spose it depends what kind of golfer you are !! i like to shape the ball & hit punch shots so blades go with my game. Plus my course is half links half parkland & generally breezy, good for hitting the ball low. But then again im not in the same league as some of the self back patting spivs on here, !! 9 handicap perfect time to get the blades on !!

I could go down to £400 since thay have each been a few times each but no lower.

Re: New Irons - 9 handicap
Plenty of good cavities out there that you don't need to have blades to become a decent player.
I with Mac & D4S companies like MD golf are producing clubs capable of rivalling and in many cases better than some big brands

Re: New Irons - 9 handicap
I would say that the VAST majority of golfers should/do use cavity backed clubs.
Most of the pro's now use some sort of cavity. Very few use blades..... and they have consistent swings.
Westwood uses ping i15's and they are cavity backed - and he's currently no.2 in the world.

Re: New Irons - 9 handicap
I have noticed recently that a few of the Pros have gone back to blades, some of the newer clubs now almost look like blades anyhow, i prefer the sharp edge that a blade gives, helps me sythe through the turf !! i think the shaft may be more help than the heed itself !!

Thanks for the advice guys, tried a few clubs this afternoon down the range, looking at Mizuno M58 dual muscle, seems to be middle ground between cavity and blades, lovely feel also....

I recently looked at those, as well as the 63s and 68s. I ended up buying the Nike Pro Combos, and I love them. Bladed short irons, cavity mid irons and pocket cavity long irons. Remarkably consistent given the different head types, and all feel good and fly beautifully.
