Comedy
Okay I know Comedy is a very subjective thing; what some people find offensive, others find hilarious.
This thread is just to find out what everyone likes. Have you been to see any shows? Are there any DVD's that you would recommend?
I've been to a few shows over the last 2 years. I've seen Michael McIntyre, Jimmy Carr, Ed Byrne, Stewart Francis, Russell Howard and Frankie Boyle. Jimmy Carr and Stewart Francis were probably the best in my opinion. Frankie Boyle was pretty funny, but he was going more for the shock value rather than actual comedy.
I've recently become somewhat addicted to watching Tim Minchin. I bought his Ready For This? DVD just after Christmas. It was a really good show. My favourite song from the DVD would probably be this one.
Okay over to you guys...

Its Lee Evans for me.
Going to see his roadrunner tour this year at the newcastle arena and i cant wait.
I think hes one of the funniest guys out there and everything he says is true. I can never get bored watching him live.

Re: Comedy
See years ago I would have agreed...but every single one of his shows seemed to be the same.
There is no doubting his energy on stage and his commitment to his artform. I do still like him...but his comedy has faded a little over the years.

Re: Comedy
I hate Lee Evans, he's not funny, he just runs around, getting sweaty.
Eddie Izzard is my fave, Glorious is brilliant. One of the funniest shows i've seen.
Hibs v Rangers - Andrew Maxwell, this video is genius.

My faves:
Jim Jeffries - For me just genius
Ricky Gervais - It's not considered 'cool' to like him anymore, I don't care.
Jimmy Carr - Saw him live, was amazed at how great his improv was.
One's I just don't get:
Billy Connolly, Vic & Bob (liked them 15-20 years ago).

Have to agree with Gervais. I have his most recent stand up and it's great
Jimmy Carr was fantastic live. I'm a big fan.
Re: Comedy
Jason Manford was excellent when I saw him, living in Manchester I have been to the comedy store a few times and would say my favourites I have seen there would be
Greg Davies
Steve Hughes
Tom Wrigglesworth
and probably many more I have forgotten about!

Re: Comedy
Surprised no one has mentioned Dara O'Brian, been a fan of him for a long time between HIGNFY and Mock the Week as well as his first stand up DVD, went to see him on his 2nd tour that produced a DVD, was awesome, after that I bought the DVD to commemorate the occasion and what amazed me the most was that roughly 50% of the material comes from audience interaction, improvised on the spot and weaved into the show, truely amazing.
Don't care for Evans or Gervais who is the spawn of the devil (the office may be the only TV show ever to be improved in a US remake), used to like Frankie Boyle but he has become something of a parody of himself saying whatever he can to illicet a reaction, I also tend not to care for comedians like Amos or Shappi Korshandi who tend to draw all their comedy from their race or nationality, I don't mind that in small doses but when an entire routine is based around it, it's too much.
Besides that I'm pretty much a fan of any other comic doing the rounds these days.

Re: Comedy
I'm a big fan of Dara O'Brian too, I think people have missed him because he's more famous for his presenting than his stand up to be fair. Although the same thing can be said about Ricky Gervais being more known for his TV.
I'm not a big fan of Lee Evans either and still struggle to see why he's so popular, I have tried many times to watch him and never laugh. However, I do like Ricky Gervais. I couldn't agree more with you with those people using race as their only jokes, Lenny Henry does it as well and I'm sure there are others.

Re: Comedy
My favourite Stand Up is Stewart Lee. I just absolutely love his style, like how he uses long pauses and ridiculous amounts of repetition to generate laughs long before the punchline. Sometimes a punchline doesn't even come and I've still laughed myself out. I think he's unique. And his "Comedy Vehicle" is the best comedy show on TV. So different to anything else on the box. Hope he makes more.
Agree with the OP on Tim Minchin. Seen him twice live, once in a tiny venue just before he blew up, and then on his orchestra tour. He is amazing!
I also like Michael McIntyre and Ricky Gervais. Gervais gets a bad rap, but Animals and Politics in particular are outstanding shows.
I've never got Lee Evans' popularity.
I can't wait for Kevin Eldon's new TV show "It's Kevin"

Re: Comedy
I saw Jimmy Carr a couple of years ago and to be honest, after about fifteen minutes he was losing my attention, not only that, I began to get the absurd feeling that I was almost obliged to laugh, in order to ward off the growing feeling that I'd wasted my money.
I only went because a friend got a batch of tickets and we made a girls night out of it. I don't think a stand up comic is good entertainment for more than a few minutes at a time. It's a genre that is usually best suited to short "turns" in working men's clubs. I've watched the Comedy Roadshow on TV and found some acts mildly amusing, but nothing that's going to make my sides ache.
I cannot stand Michael McIntyre.
Some years ago, the BBC ran a successful series called "An Audience With" and there were two episodes of that, one with Billy Connolly, and one with Victoria Wood, that were absolutely superb entertainment from genuine comedy giants.
Perhaps I was spoiled and am trying to compare the current crop of journeymen, working men's club performers like Carr and Evans with A-Listers.
Whatever, I'm sure that, come the Autumn, McIntyre and his repulsive, grinning mug will have me reaching for the remote control again so even if there are some genuinely funny acts out there, I will probably miss them.

I've never really found Billy Connolly funny, I have a DVD of his at home, not sure which, but I never really laugh a lot at him. I know he's rated as probably the best ever...but I really don't see it.

Re: Comedy
Sean Lock, Jason Manford and Frankie Boyle are all excellent as panelists but I've never really found their stand-up gigs that funny.
I enjoy Michael McIntyre, but I feel he is being dliuted by a diluge of observational comedians about nowadays. Kevin Bridges is also quite good and Stewart Francis is something different.
Jimmy Carr I find to be very hit and miss although he's always excellent on 8OOTCs.
