HC-type draw for World CUP QF?
Interesting article in today's Guardian on a possible change to how the World Cup quarter final pairings are decided - http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/2011/aug/16/rugby-world-cup
Essentially what is being discussed is that instead of current system of winner group A playing runnerup group B, runner up group B playing winner group A etc etc, should use a system like the Heineken Cup where the pairings are decided on the group record of the four group winners and four runners up are ranked 1 to 8, with 1 playing 8, 2 playing 7, 3 playing 6 and 4 playing 5.
Writer says this would make group phase more interesting and reduce the number of dead matches - not sure how he comes to that conclusion - but HC system works very well in Europe. Any thoughts out there?

With the top 4 3rd places going into a shield semi and final

Interesting idea. The drawback with the RWC is that it's played in 1 country over a shorter timespan than the HEC. The pools were set up so far ahead for this year in order to allow visitors to plan ahead their NZ travel - Auckland and Wellington are a fair ways apart, and booking travel/accom a few days ahead of a game gets expensive and complicated.
