Re: Welsh Squad Thread - Warburton (Capt) - Nugget OUT
Both reserve 7s (Turnbull and Williams) left out. So Warburton has to play 80mins every game!
Four wings plus JD, and Roberts have experience of playing there.
Wierd!!!!!!!!!

I think it's one competition too early for Faletau but I hope he proves me wrong.

Re: Welsh Squad Thread - Warburton (Capt) - Nugget OUT
Why Powell who is worse than Toby and R Jones at 8 and Worse than R Jones Turnbull and Lydiate at 6 and no Turnbull or Tipuric who can cover 7? Also Turnbull can cover 4,5,6 and 7 (has even played 8 if we're in dire straights).
Big call on Hibbert, lets hope Bennetts form holds out.
Happy with the backs, but maybe could have dropped a winger (Brew I suppose, but like him) to include Turnbull.

Re: Welsh Squad Thread - Warburton (Capt) - Nugget OUT
Im not suprised Williams is out but i'am suprised that they havent taken Turnball who can cover around the back row and in the 2nd row, i'm guessing lydiate will be back up openside if Warburton is injured?

Calm down - Powell aside its a decent looking squad and encouraging to see Nuggett not in there - Brave and right decision, I like Owens, Burns looks a liability. There's enough quality however for us to give it more than a good crack. I'd go as far as to say its close to the best squad we've ever sent to a RWC

POwell is in, Martyn is rightfully left out; according to the team announcement on the WRU site. Powell did well against ARg but it's unlikely he'll follow that up. We'll have to wait and see. He isn't good at the breakdown but can be a good strike runner and put in some good hits; it wouldn't be a bad idea pairing him with Lydiate and Warburton in the back row.

Re: Welsh Squad Thread - Warburton (Capt) - Nugget OUT
Question,,, Is there any reason that players that are not named in the 30 man squad cant travel as support staff.
The reason I'm asking is that they will already be acclimatised if called upon to cover injuries.

Really surprised Turnbull hasn't been included, given how many positions he can cover. Odd.

Big fan of Warburton. Delighted for him to win the captaincy. Feel very sorry for Martyn Williams though.

If their employer's is willing for them to go. The regions will expect them to get into training now and start playing soon. Doubt any would got if they're outside the 30.

Pretty shocked that Brew is in, but then injuries have somewhat helped him. I thought Martyn Williams would go mind.

Byrne - didn't think would or should make it
Williams - didn't think Gatland would have the balls to drop
Turnbull - Surprised
Powell - I knew he would be in, however half a decent game against Italy (whoops I mean Argentina)
Brew - never seen anything in a Wales shirt however I guess no other wingers?
Overall I think great squad, its what Gatland does with it that worries me

Re: Welsh Squad Thread - Warburton (Capt) - Nugget OUT
Byrne will need a bit of time to get his old form back but when he is on form he is up there with the best.
He made a couple of mistakes Saturday but I think he will improve.
A specialist fullback has to be a better option than playing somebody out of position and a off form Byrne is not a poor player it's just our expectations are higher because we know he is a quality player.

Well I knew he would be in the squad regardless of his performance over the weekend, he is certainly a favourite of Gatland and can do no wrong.
Argies are a shadow of their 2007 team and I put them on par with Italy. Powell had a half decent game against very poor opposition in my opinion and I guess that has swung it for him

I think it's a brave move to leave Hibbert out - as although he looked out of shape and didn't play great, give him a month to get fit and I reckon he'd do well at least on the bench coming on for 60mins. Also if Bennett starts playing awful you've got an inexperienced Burns whose played poorly so far - I admit he may show the form that got him called up when given his next chance, and an inexperienced Owens who desperately needs gametime (I don't think he's played since January?).

I have to disagree with that. An off-form Byrne is a poor player.

I also rate Brew and think he's very active, fast and aggresive when he has come on. My only question is do we need 5 wingers?

I agree, all hes been given is the occassional 2nd half start - we didnt need to play North again against the Pumas - we knew how good he was , should've let Brew have a full run

Argentina are a poor team but a bit better than Italy without having their luxuries of playing top level rugby each year. I'd put the Argies on par with Scotland. If they find a new 10 and put Felipe to 12 (since he was running like one all afternoon) then their backs might be a bit dangerous.

Still remember that penalty and Byrne failing to kick the ball into touch in last years 6 Nations, didn't he do it twice?

He could cover a mid field spot if needed, hes strong and agressive enough and doesn't slow down when running into tackles. I'm not sure if his handling skills are good enough though

I beleive the decision to leave HIBBARD out has nothing to do with 'fitness' per se. He sufferred ankle ligament damage on Saturday and it is widely reported that - "He will see a specialist today (Monday) but looks likely to become the second Welsh hooker to miss the tournament after skipper Matthew Rees’ neck problem"

Ahh didn't hear that Hibbard was injured - thats an understandable selection now (dropping Hibbard and picking Owens), I suppose if he isn't badly injured he could always be called up after we've played a few games.
It's worrying what Gatlands doing to our squad, I mean it's great that we're really fit and are very physical but our players are dropping like flies!
