Well Done The Dublin Hoops!
Well since this is an "Irish Sports" section and apparently not just for GAA I'd like to congratulate the Irish champions Shamrock Rovers on making history and becoming the first soccer club from Ireland to reach the Europa League group stages after an amazing 2-1 win over Serbian champs FK Partizan Belgrade.

Fantastic result and just the shot in the arm that the League needs. Just hoping for some glamour fixtures now. Spurs would be great.

Just wondering how many of you actually supported the LOI before today?

Fair enough. But there are probably GAA fans on here who would like to see the league prosper without having to support it. I have attended roughly three home games of Limerick FC this year. I would'nt call myself a fan but that really is up to the people who have played or are playing the game. We have commented here about such sports as Cricket and Tennis and I would'nt say there were too many die-hard fans of those two sports on here.

Great result for Irish football, im a Shels fan but I was shouting for Rover's last night, they did Ireland proud, it's the best moment in Irish football since Shels played gaelic football in Ibrox

I support the LOI about as much as Robbie Keane supported LA Galaxy as a kid. Still as redtop said its good to see rovers making history for Irish club soccer.
Funny how the old firm and fart of midlothian are all out while Shams progress further.

And its just getting better for them. Shams have a glamour tie against Spurs!
They've been drawn in group A-
Spurs (ENG)
Rubin Kazan (RUS)
PAOK Salonika (GRE)
Shamrock Rovers (IRE)

Since the recession it seems like Irish sport has benifited-
-GAA attendances remain solid
-Irish Rugby is on the up with Leinster & Munster winning in Europe and Irelaand's '09 Grandslam
-Irish soccer is doing well for itself
-And the English got humbled by the Irish in Cricket
-And McIlroy's Golfing success

It does seem Irish sport is going through a very good patch of success alright. Conor Niland is doing well too.
How do ye think Rovers will do in the group?

Let's wait to see how Deccie's boys do in the RWC before claiming Irish teams are having success. Curry, the league cup final is in the Cross between Derry City and Cork City.

I love cricket. I watched the entire game there yesterday. Rovers are my least favourite LOI team, by a distance but it is a great result. Fair play to em. I love soccer too and go to the Brandywell a good bit. Celtic first, but they are not as good as Derry.

I wouldn't be surprised if Derry got a draw against Celtic. The SPL is awful.

I may have used hyperbole, but I am genuinely a fan of cricket and I think it is an excellent game in its various guises.

Gwann Rebel you closet cricket fan, you will be ran out of Cork if anyone find's out. I have watched a few one day game's out of boredom but that test muck is the most boring game I have ever layed eye's on.

I understand why folk don't like it but I enjoy it.
Remember in 92, where everyone in the country became an expert in amateur boxing and then in 96 we all became experts in swimming......Cricket went the same direction for a couple of days after beating englandshire. I have always liked it, especially the test matches. A proper contest.

Re: Well Done The Dublin Hoops!
FYI:
IRELAND’S NUMBER ONE tennis player, Conor Niland, has qualified for the US Open tennis tournament – his second straight grand slam tournament – after a three-set victory over the Netherlands’ Matwe Mittelkoop at Flushing Meadows today.
Having lost the opening set on Court 5 by 6 games to 2, Niland fought back to break twice in the second set, winning 6-1, before a decisive break in the deciding set handed the Limerick man a 6-4 victory.
The world number 199 has now qualified for the tournament proper, though his first-round opponent has not yet been identified. It’s also not clear when his match may begin, with New York set to be hit by Hurricane Irene in the coming hours.
In addition to paving the way for a surge in the world rankings, the Limerick man’s qualification also goes some way towards validating his slightly unorthodox nutritional preparation.

Cricket just makes me go Tennis is boring, so is golf...and I'm not really into the other football. I won't be jumping on the bandwagon even though I stayed in Tallaght when I was in Dublin a few weeks ago...

After a great day for Irish soccer there are allegations of match fixing in last night's FAI Cup game as Shelbourne were outgunned by Sheriff YC. The allegations are due to irregular betting patterns.

Dont have fond memories from the summer of 92. That commentator from the cricket is a nut job, his name is bumble, I would watch it just to listen to him.

The best game the longshanks tans played in rugby was the 1990 grandslam decider. We finally decided to ditch the German anthem for FOS and hammered the absolute sh!te out them in the process.
More succes for Irish sport as the Fianna win the Aussie rules international cup by beating PNG 53-35 in the final while hammering gb in the process.

news filtering through about some irregular betting patterns.
Some gentlemen believed to be proprietors of a kebab shop alongside Rocky Sullivans in Red Hook are believed to have wagered large amounts of filthy lucre on the serbian lad.
