Memorable tackles
Rugby is a contact sport so you get used to and want to see it played hard and fair.
But some tackles just sear themselves into you memory:
Gav on Tait: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzN8Hg7yCkE
Lewsey on Rogers : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3cnss1UMO8
Mickey Skinner on Cecillon : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAjm4hgIyhQ
And of course the unfortunate Manu/Wally incident: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMH7OfIc5MQ (I chose that clip because it reflects the passion of the experience in the ground and I love the unmoderated comments attached).

Re: Memorable tackles
What about missed tackles!
Mike Catt on Lomu 1995.
Still makes me laugh.
There was a tackle on Sheridan in the recent Ireland game, forgot who attempted it but the HD slow motion camera showed Sheridan’s FLABBY muscles rippling for a second or so after.

The Gregan on Wilson is a great one.
How about: Hernandez's try saver on Tuilagi senior, great try saver.

Derek Hougaard being hit by Brian Lima is a good one too, serious pain!

That wasn't exactly O'Connell, it was most of the Munster pack. Epic tackle though.
Denis Hickie v Chris Patterson in 2007 (i think) was unreal. Not a big hit, but as good a try saving tackle as you'll see.

That wasn't a tackle. That was a crude gang-banging an old man in public.
I recall that. It was awesome. Don't remind Swanny though.

Sorry Portnoy can't look up youtube at work. Will stick up the vids later. Not sure if I'll be able to get the Gibbs one from the Lions but the others should be easy to find, in fact I watch Tuilagi smash Foden every night before I go to bed....

Re: Memorable tackles
Nice 1 Portnoy . The O'Driscoll one was from the Lions 2nd test.
Didn't think the Gibbs one would be there, it was from the first Lions test in 1997. Sneyman takes a midfield line off Honiball I think and Gibbs stops him in his track lifts him into the air and drives him back 2 or 3 metres.

I remember it like it was yesterday, the Ollie La Roux (vs Natal?) collision was even better. In terms of tackles though I think the Sneyman one is one that stands out.
Gibbs was phenomenal in that series, it was one of the few times I've ever seen the boks physically dominated, they just seemed in awe of Gibbs.

Frig forgot about that one on Tuiquiri. He absolutely smashed him. It's a pity there isn't more clips of Best on youtube, he really was awesome against the SH teams home and away in 2006.
It's a real shame he fell out with the IRFU because he was/is an awesome player.

Not technically a tackle, but in this year's 6nations (i think)....
Mike Phillips running through the Italian scrum half.
and then....
the little italian fella returning the exact same favour to Mike later in the game!
I understand your hatred of donkey work Portnoy, however, I am fully websensed to my eyes in the office and unable to access youtube and thus deeply apologise i could provide no more than the above.
I could describe it all through the means of 'Quinell vs Greenwood' though?

Re: Memorable tackles
I've followed rugby since the mid-1950s and was at the Arms Park in 1961 to see what's been called one of the most momentous tackles in rugby history. Unfortunately, I don't know if it's available on film anywhere, but the following account may be of interest.
South Africa were unbeaten on tour, having defeated all four home nations, and the last match was against the Barbarians in Cardiff. They were very unpopular tourists and it was rumoured that the Baa-Baas side was picked to beat the Springboks regardless of style - against the normal Barbarian ethos.
They followed tradition by picking an uncapped player - Haydn Mainwaring of Swansea and the Royal Navy - at fullback.
I was standing on a terrace only a dozen yards back from the pitch when the Springbok captain, a world-class second-row named Avril Malan, went tanking down the touchline on his way to scoring a try. His head was back, gulping in the air, legs pumping.
The only Baa-Baas player anywhere near was Mainwaring who started trotting across from midfield. They were on a collision course directly in front of me and a hard shove from the side would have put Malan in touch.
Suddenly, when Mainwaring was a few yards from Malan he charged with tremendous force, hitting the South Africa captain under the heart with the point of his shoulder. Malan didn't seem to have a clue he was coming. You could hear his ribs crack. I think it would be illegal these days, so some might argue it wasn't a memorable tackle as such. But it was definitely a memorable moment.
Poor Avril Malan was poleaxed, unconscious over the touchline. Mainwaring glanced down at him and trotted back into midfield. The first Springbok on the scene had to be restrained by other team members from getting in amongst us, the crowd, who were jumping up and down with joy. I don't suppose any of us spoke Afrikaans but we got the gist of what he was shouting!
Apparently, Malan went to the end-of-tour dinner that evening but had to leave because he felt so ill. The Barbarians won the game 6-0. When the Lions went to South Africa in 1962, the Springboks, captained by Avril Malan, took revenge by crushing them in 3 tests and drawing 1.

Re: Memorable tackles
I still have nightmares about that tackle by Gregan on Goldie.
Some crunching tackles that make you grateful for just watching are Jerry Collins on Chabal, Chabal on Collins, Lomu in a club game put in a sick tackle which I think can be searched by biggest tackle Lomu.
But my favourite was in a provincial match with Andrew Merths, not renowned for his tackling. He put in a nice tackle that punched the air out of someone´s gut but it was more the reaction of that clown Merths. He got up grinning ear to ear looking as though he was the new enforcer in town and a force to be reckoned with giving winks and giving plenty of lip to anyone around him, be they team mate or opposition.
Rod Davies must be having nightmares about Tualigi. I don´t know how many times he got hammered by him but it put pay to any notion of him wearing gold.

The Lewsey one on Rogers as mentioned in the first post is the one that immediately came to mind. Not only had there been a bit of handbags between them earlier but I remember Martin Johnson (of all people) telling Lewsey to calm down, not get carried away, and he'd get his moment.
Boy, did he. Rogers was a tough little so-and-so too but there was no way he was coming back after that hit

Yep, the Lewsey tackle for me as well. Rogers tried getting a board specially cut for the broken ribs that now protrude, but that didn't work and he's had to give surfing up.

As with most things on a PC, there's nearly always more than one way to skin a cat
What I do is to open a new window and go to youtube https://www.youtube.com/
Put in a really strong hint prefix like 'Rugby union tackle' followed by the detailed search criteria
e.g. Rugby union tackle Thomas O'Leary on Benoit Baby
Chose the clip you want and open it and then copy the url of the clip and paste it back here

I don't think it's been mentioned, but Jonah Lomu on Ben Tune (can't find video on the yooo tube).
Aled Brew on Luke Fitzgerald last season was very good too. Was a funny seeing it at the ground as it looked like Leinster were threatening, then Brew sat Fitz down and Adam Hughes ran the spilled ball in for a Dragons score. Again no link.
