Time Violation for Cilic
Well that was a shock wasn't it? A really crucial time to make it as well.
I guess if he was over the time and not for the first time then fair enough. I don't see anything in the rules that says they get tipped off, and his average at the time was 25 secs so he must have been exceeding the rule frequently, but the issue is that this decision is so out of line with the current norm of the game.
If only this would become standard umpiring then the game would be better and nobody could complain, but with the way some of the top players basically ignore the rule and virtually always get away with it, I thought it was harsh on Cilic.

i) That he got it at all?
ii) That he got it without a tip from the Umpire?
iii) That he got it under the current Umpiring environment where it is generally ignored?

ii and iii!
The timing was a disgrace. Clearly a referee being briefed by the organisers to help the big names like Federer.
Did you read my post on the other main thread?

And this is one reason I have always been annoyed with Nadal's taking time cause we know they don't treat them all alike.

Can't say I saw it, yet it does seem suspect given the time it was called and that I can't recall ever seeing a match where he was pulled up for a time violation.

Re: Time Violation for Cilic
It was a very unfortunate time for Cilic because he had been the better player of the third set until then. Perhaps a warning was given at a changeover? It wasn't noticeable if that was so.
I do think the rules should be enforced, but I have to agree that it is not an even playing field out there and the top players are rarely called in to line.

It would be nice to think that having put this marker down they will enforce it across the board. I shan't be holding my breath though.
