Poorest Grand slam ever
Grand slams are the pinnacle of tennis events but they do throw in the worse at times. None that embarrassing in terms of quality, seeds depth etc as the Australian Open 2006. Remembered Nadal, Safin, Agassi all not attending and any man titled 'tennis player' getting seeded. The icing on the cake came courtesy of an unseeded player named Marco Bagdhatis making the finals. Remembered Nalbandian was 2 sets to love up against Baghdatis until he got hungry and decided to get off court fast.
Can you think of any more worse slam events?

Wimbledon '95 was a bit weird, Richard Krajicek v Mal Washington in the final. Not to mention the streaker.

You mean 96, that was a strange Wimbledon too and quite poor but Krajicek did defeat a prime Sampras in the quarter finals and in straight sets. infact he only dropped 1 set the whole tournament. 5 star performance through out.

Didn't some guy called Puerta make the final during a very weak FO one year?

Re: Poorest Grand slam ever
There were some incredibly bad finalists in the 90's. If someone of the standard of Washington made a final now there would be hysterical laughter. And don't even get me started on Cedric Pioline.
Going further back, recalling that Chris Lewis made a final in the 80's always brings a smile.

Have to say that FO was not strong but the drugs finally paid off for Puerta and a barely 19 year Old Nadal walking through the field to lift the trophy.

"barely 19 year old".
That's nothing, I remember a time when 17 year old Becker won Wimbledon and a small Oriental child who appeared to have lost his mother and wandered onto court won the French serving underarm.

I don't know Ferrero v. Monfils was great and so was Tsonga v. Fish, what makes this a poor slam we just started the second weak and have had some pretty good matches.

Wimbledon 85 had a strong field but it's to be said Becker had a lucky streak there. Dodged the big guns all the way but as he showed later, wasn't a once of luck as he made more finals.

Re: Poorest Grand slam ever
No freudian slip a typo. So far I think we have gotten a few good matches, and since the meat of the event is coming I would just say lets wait and see if this is the worst slam ever. It has nothing to do with my weaker/stronger era argument. I was one the first people to state that Cincy was one of the worst tournaments I have ever seen. BB and emancipator are the ones with an agenda. BB has demonstrated that agenda even before Novak ever won a slam by his continual attempts to denigrate Nadal, now that Djoko is number #1 he is trying to do the same thing with him. The extremist fed fans are the only fans on this site who continually disrespect every other top player of today in order to erect their deity The Rog above the sport itself.

Socal, there is nothing in the original post to suggest that the author considers the current Slam to be in any way weak or poor. He's simply asking the question "which Slam do you think was the weakest ever?"

Actually, the OP author is on a 'Fed could only win in a weak era' crusade - this is just a part of it.

Fair enough. I don't visit the site frequently enough to keep track of posters who are pursuing particular agendas. I just took the post at face value.

What exactly has the weak era got to do with this? You can either argue agains this being the weakest slam or not. Can't think of many slams as poor at that.

Bit harsh I don't think of SA as the Osama of the site. There are way more fed fans that try to character assassinate Nadal and Djoko then the other way around.

Wimbledon 1973 - boycott year
Wimbledon 1974 - a guy who had never made the final before beats a 39 year old who had never won Wimbledon
French Open 1976 - Pannata (one-slam wonder) defeats Solomon (only GS final) in the absence of World No 1. player.
French Open 1977 - World No 1 and No 2 absent
Any Australian Open in the 1970s.
How many more do you want, I haven't got all day.

Re: Poorest Grand slam ever
However, those tennis posters that do "assassinate" certain players don't write the same thing over and over and do offer other tennis knowledge besides just one player who had success in a "weak era" (lol). I don't believe SA writes such dross to get back at others, he just does it for himself it seems.Bit harsh I don't think of SA as the Osama of the site. Re: Poorest Grand slam ever
Back to the OP - in modern times Aus Open 2002 was a bit of an oddity. The 3rd seed and defending champion Agassi scratched, the top 2 seeds lost in the 1st round (Hewitt, Kuerten), and the 4th seed (Kafelnikov) lost in the 2nd round leaving Grosjean (5) and Henman (6) the highest ranked players in the draw - but they did not last long.
There was only one past slam winner in the QF's, Safin (9) - the highest ranked player in the QF's was Haas (7) - and Safin admits he choked in the final vs. Johansson (16).
The one 'big' match was the R16 encounter between Sampras (8) and Safin (9), but Sampras was not at his best then.
