New munster signing
Will chambers
Good signing in my view big and can score trys
Munster have announced the signature Reds centre/wing Will Chambers on a short-term contract.
Chambers will bolster the Munster ranks during the World Cup, although his arrival is still subject to being granted a valid work permit and undergoing medical and fitness clearance.
The 23-year-old, who stands at 6'3", spent the past two seasons with the current Super Rugby champions and prior to that played Rugby League with Melbourne Storm.
He made his Super Rugby debut off the bench against Waratahs in Feb 2010 and ended that season as joint leading try scorer.
"We're delighted to be able to secure the services of a quality player whose experience gleaned at Super 15 club level will stand us in good stead in the immediate future while our players are on RWC duty and in the crucial period of the Heineken Cup Pool stages," said Munster coach Tony McGahan.

Re: New munster signing
I read he was going back to Rugby League. He struggled to get into the Reds team and I'm surpised to see him mentioned as a centre/wing. I thought he was an out and out 13.
Still though I'm happy with the signing.

Re: New munster signing
What I like too D24 is that we are probably signing a guy eager to prove things to himself and his critics. He has been released from the Queensland Reds and will be using this to put himself back in shop window I'd imagine.
But yes our backline is extremely young now - apart from old man Doug on the wing at 33.

Re: New munster signing
Yeah he is eager and only 23 himself, if it worked out for him he could spend a few years at munster,
Take ROG and Dougie out and its a whole new generation back there,
We could see an ireland team with munster backs and leinster forwards

Re: New munster signing
BTW thats an average age of 23.9 for those backs. Not bad at all.
I this this is great for Connacht. Munster, Ulster and Leinster all have fairly young squads. Connacht can keep the likes of Niall O'Connor, Eoin Griffin, Tiernan O'Halloran for almost a decade.

What is the world coming to - Brown Thomas are sponsoring Munster's official wear and there as many southside Dubs on the Munster team as there are on the Leinster team
Then you have one of the young Leinster player: 'Spoiled brat' rugby star who admitted assault held in custody"

Back on topic, I wonder those this fellow have an Irish granny? Seems he maybe well peed off with his native Australians (though I see he has played Australia A). Any comments I've seen about him say he is great going forward but defence is a bit suspect.
Will Chambers may have to consider return to rugby league as he is again picked on the bench for the Queensland Reds
WILL Chambers is being pushed into considering a return to rugby league next year, with another selection knockback denting his World Cup dreams.
It is not just being dropped after round 3 that stings but the fact he has been overlooked repeatedly when centre changes and vacancies forced by injury have arisen.
That was the case yesterday when Chambers was left on the bench for tomorrow night's Super Rugby blockbuster against the Auckland Blues at Suncorp Stadium.
Instead, coach Ewen McKenzie has gone with a like-for-like solution by drafting young Ben Tapuai and his ball-playing benefits to replace sidelined Mike Harris (knee) at inside centre.
"We considered a few options to replace Mike but in the end the straight swap at inside centre allows us to continue building continuity in our other backline positions," McKenzie said.

If that is tacit approval that defensive leader Anthony Faingaa is to continue at outside centre for the rest of the season, Chambers is really battling to win back his specialist No.13 slot.
McKenzie has said the 2011 game is different to 2010, with defence now such an emphasis and the need for extra ball players to crack the line.
Key playmaker Quade Cooper, halfback Will Genia, fullback Ben Lucas and Tapuai up that quota.
Ironically, Chambers may have stronger selection prospects with the Wallabies, who have a dearth of big, 100kg line busters at outside centre.
The issue is that Chambers has now been bypassed for big measuring stick match-ups against Springbok Jaque Fourie (Stormers) and Rene Ranger or Jared Payne at the Blues.
In a fortnight, a chance against the powerhouse Crusaders pairing of Sonny Bill Williams and Robbie Fruean may also have been missed.
There is lots of uncertainty for a 22-year-old such as Chambers to deal with when a regular starting spot is probably all he craves in either code. He is making strides in rugby and there is still huge potential for a Test career.
But an NRL club may even now be promising the 2009 Melbourne Storm grand final winner a starting spot for 2012.
Blues coach Pat Lam has publicly urged every fan of the Auckland team in southeast Queensland to turn up at Suncorp Stadium tomorrow night.

Scratch that we could see a backline made up of all Ulster/Munstermen soon :
9 Murray
10 Jackson
11 Zebo/Gilroy
12 Marshall
13 Spence
14 Earls
15 Jones
I like the look of those Munster backs stag. Exciting times ahead I just wish we had the same talent in the tight 5. Dougie Howlett is still the greatest though

I used not rate Stephen Archer all that highly. But I think that Archer, Sherry, O'Mahony and Nagle are top young options in the forwards.
Re: New munster signing
Will Chambers sounds pretty tempory just world cup cover, I bet the short term contract isn't extended as Munster go in search of a marquee centre.
Also does the rugby have transfer windows like the football?

Re: New munster signing
You wouldn't know Kingshu what the story is really. With the world cup on this year and New Zealand signing up all the players they wanted before announcing the world cup squad, its hard to see if anyone would be available on anything other than a short contract.
Chambers may have been released by the Reds, but he was still good enough for them to bench in the Super Rugby Final. From what I can read the factors were that he isn't a good squad player (needs to be starting/confidence) and the Reds had problems with the salary cap. If they released him they could hold onto Digby Ioane who was strongly tempted by a massive offer from Japan.
I wonder does the fact that Tony McGahan is a Queenslander, who played rugby league as a centre have anything to do with him coming to Munster to possibly try and sort out his game. For the life I can't see why he wouldn't head for France or anywhere other than the cold & wet south west of Ireland.
It will be interesting to see how he copes with that!

Re: New munster signing
He could be good, and win a longer contract, I could be wrong, just doesn't seem to be the name I was expcting for Munster. TBH I thought they wouldn't be going for a younger player with promse, but someone who is at there peak.
DeVillers back again is what I though, but this could work out better, its a case of wait and see.
He does sound like the type of player Munster need at center

Re: New munster signing
King - he's young but he's made it fairly high only to be shoved back down to Earth. I'm much happier with him than de Villiers. He brings playing experience with the likes of Genia and Cooper - some of the best at the running game. He also brings a Rugby League influence - not a bad thing to have. And he is motivated - he has played for big teams in League and Union. But surplus to requirment in both. I much prefer that to JDV - strikes me as a guy looking to get a cushy number with Juan de Jongh breathing down his neck at Stormer.

I came accross this quote from an article about him:
McKenzie has attributed the 22-year-old's struggles to the enhanced contest for the ball at the breakdown, which has put more emphasis on ball playing - passing and kicking - by backs over ball running.
In 2010, Chambers was a key man in getting Queensland over the advantage line, but now the Reds feel they need to create more through a second playmaker at inside centre beside Quade Cooper, and fullback Ben Lucas as another ball player.
Faingaa can perform a number of roles at No.13 and McKenzie has stressed his inspirational tackling, as his side's best backline defender, "got him a ticket to the dance".
Chambers' ability to play on the wing could become an important asset, with flyers Rod Davies and Peter Hynes on the long-term injury list and youngsters Dom Shipperley and Kimami Sitauti set to miss the next month on Australian Under-20s duty.
Interesting comments about needing to be able to pass and kick over ball running.
