He's the best person for the dodgy all rounder/bits and pieces player available.

Borthwick is very capable with the bat and better spinner than Patel. Why not have him at 7?

Patel is a much, much better batsman than Borthwick who's list a stats aren't good at all.

Tough decision - do they send Patel to India where he may gets hit about or send another spinner who might get the same treatment.

Perhaps its better to go with pace and swing and play only Swann !

If he can't really bat, why not Briggs and have a real spinner?

You realise that this is yet another sonic boom WUM account right?

Thng is he probably has a good point in this case. Even more embaressing for Inida that they lost to a side with a passenger

The second spinner has always been a problem position for England. They want 5 bowlers who can regulalry deliver 10 overs each plus a couple of part time options. Borthwick seems to be the guy they are looking at long term.

Yeah his comments about Bell and Cook suggests the same to me.
But in this case,I think he has a point.Patel is awful.

So he dropped a couple of Dollies.
He's not the first is he?
Doesn't make him a bad cricketer.

Not really.
He wasn't great last night (though as a 2nd spinner on a good pitch against great players of spin I don't think he was too bad), but at Chester-Le-Street he was England's most economical bowler.

He's only batted once.
Scored 9 off 9 balls to help England to victory.

Before that, his battings never been up to scratch for a 'Batting all-rounder'.

He's batted 8 times. 7 of those at 7 in the order. He averages 20+ with a 90+ s/r. Not great figures, but not poor either.

Then you look to bowling average, 34. Not great figures but not terrible either. Average player all-round.

Patels avergae snce his recall has been worse than that. But wicket taking snt his job, in his defence hes genraly used in the strangling phase...so look to his economy rate as much as his threat.
In prevous England teams I wouldve been happy with him ...hes certainly no worse than Yardy. But he is one of the weaker players, and its a slot you feel England could improve in.

i think if patel is picked for india tour, and has a bad tour, then that could it be for him for england, cos 2nd spell in national side, and looks like he has gone backwards
