Best excuse for a loss Empty Best excuse for a loss

Post by Guest Fri 25 Feb 2011, 1:20 pm

Reading the thread re Oscar's dodgy decsions, I liked the comments made re his loss to Sugar Shane when he stated it was because he'd over indulged on oysters the night before.

Who else has come up with hilarious, outlandish or downright cringeworthy excuses for a defeat?

One of my favourites is Manny Pacquiao claiming his loss to Morales was due in no small part to wearing the wrong socks!

Henry Cooper was always good for an excuse or five.

Best of the bunch was when Johansson knocked him comatose at an ice rink in Sweden.

'Enry claimed that the Sun had been in his eyes and he didn't see the punch coming.

Not really an excuse but Dempsey explaining to his missus his loss to Tunney by saying "Honey I just forgot to duck" always amused me

Mike Tyson's infamous "I broke my back, my back is broken. Its spinal."

Not technically an excuse though, as he had just won the fight.

Union, if you're not going to read the question properly, you're just going to make a mockery of this whole 'education' thing.

I was going to say that I expected better of you but.....

Sorry love.

It was "hilarious, outlandish" and "downright cringeworthy" though, so not completely out of place.

Tyson has some priceless quotes - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hu57oIv8SLM - but not many of them excuses.

Although the standard Tyson excuse that he only ever lost because his trainer died (years ago) he didn't train (why not?) and he lost because he'd actually won the fight the previous round but the ref had cheated by saving Douglas with a long count.
----------------------------------
Although this isn't boxing - this is, without a doubt, my favourite sports excuse:

Lighton Ndefwayl
"The Zambian tennis player responded to a defeat in a local tournament by Musumba Bwayla with a typically understated critique of his rival: ‘Bwayla is a stupid man and a hopeless player. He has a huge nose and is cross-eyed. Girls hate him. He beat me because my jockstrap was too tight and because when he serves he farts, and that made me lose my concentration, for which I am famous throughout Zambia.’

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant, Ox.

I damned near choked from laughing. For some unearthly reason I imagined Primo Carnera saying it after his drubbing from Max Baer.

When Benn lost to Watson, I believe someone suggested that it was because Nigel had spent 20 hours in the hairdressers getting his hair braided/plaited.

"It's my evil twin's fault." -- Anti-doping tests indicated someone else's red blood cells were mixed with Cyclist Tyler Hamilton's blood. He claimed that was because he had a twin who was re-absorbed while in the womb.

Shocked

Is that Floyd Mayweather, 41-0?

He probably only claimed it was a rotator cuff because he was not quick enough off the mark to think to blame wearing the wrong socks

How about Roy Jones after his defeat to Tarver in the 3rd fight - 'I lost on purpose because my dad would've gotten all the credit.'

And didnt Wlad say he was drugged when he fell apart against Brewster!

Cheers
