REM call it a day.
Yep - one of the biggest bands of the 90's have decided to split up.
Thought I would mention it!
I saw them at Stirling Castle in '99 - great gig from a band I was indifferent to.
So what did you make of them? Does this news sadden you?

Re: REM call it a day.
I love REM's music, I can't say the news saddens me as they've left us with lots of great songs.
I'll have a think as to which one is my favourite and post it up.
Haha....that didn't take long

Both Solerina's and GG's posts are of my two favourite REM songs. Excellent band, and Automatic for the People was one of my favourite albums too.

REM's high point was getting Kate Pierson to sing on one of their songs.
And providing the soundtrack to one Jim Carrey movie that was actually quite watchable

Re: REM call it a day.
Great band and great songs but not a surprise that they have finally split after all these years. I'm not saddened either as they have been in decline since the heights of 1992, they have never been able to recapture the magic since for the most part.
My favourite track is not from what will be considered their seminal album (Automatic for the People) but from their first ever single and then album. I had been tempted to name Nightswimmer as my favourite but it just couldn't live to the highs of the initial single for me.
Here you go.

Re: REM call it a day.
In my final years of school REM were my fave band, while all my mates were into Guns n Roses, Def Leppard etc I was the emo before emo listening to Stipe moan about things.
Think tonight I'll put on their greatest hits.

I liked a few of their songs, although after Automatic for the People, I thought they went a bit stale. I guess that happens to some bands after such a long time together without a break.
And Michael Stipe is a knob.

I was under the belief that Michael Stipe had AIDS for the majority of my adult life, and that was the only reason they were popular.

That was quite a big rumour Demon, everyone was waiting for him to pop it, and whenever he looked a little thin people though he was on deaths door.
He is in a relationship with a man, so I'm guessing people read between the lines and came up with gay musician = AIDS.

I think it might also have had something to do with Nicky Wire saying that he hoped Michael Stipe went the same way as Freddie Mercury at the Reading Festival in '92...

Yeah, it was Demon. To be fair, they made up afterwards and he apologised.

Re: REM call it a day.
I'm a little saddened by the news but agree its probably about time they called it a day.
For me they made 3 good/great albums, Automatic For the People, Out of Time and Monster (also bought Reveal but thought it was pants).
Will always have their better songs to remember them by. Best wishes to Stipe, Buck and co with whatever they do next.
Also read that N-Dubz are going to call it a day within the next 2 years (2 years too long if you ask me).

Re: REM call it a day.
My fave REM songs (in no particular order):
It's The End of the World As We Know It
Orange Crush
The One I Love
Losing My Religion
Nightswimming
Near Wild Heaven
Shiny Happy People
Everybody Hurts
Can't say I'm too bothered about them splitting though, I wasn't into their most recent stuff. I wish I'd seen them live in the '90s though.

I despised N-Dubz with a passion but after hearing Dappy on Radio 1 the other day I've warmed to them slightly, they obviosuly know how to go about writing songs, they might not be to my taste but at least they're not manufactured.
Re: REM call it a day.
I had a similar turn of feeling on N-Dubz when I saw a documentary on them in the studio (not their own documentary) - though I can't stand that style of music, I was impressed by their musical vision and how they are able to write songs and get them recorded - with what looked like ease to them.

Re: REM call it a day.
While Automatic for the People and Out of Time will always be remembered the most there's no doubt for me that Murmur is as good if not better than both albums.
Never did like Monster that much or anything that came after Automatic for the People.

I dont get to many gigs but I did see REM in 99 at Stirling Castle, supported by Teenage Fan Club.
REM were great at a great venue.
Re: REM call it a day.
I was sat in an Indian restaurant last week when I heard the news the REM had split up.
I was so shocked I fainted, face-down in my curry.
That's me in the korma.
