Re: Top 5 greatest one loss fighters in history
Tunney would certainly have to be top of the pile, spot on there JBW, but I think you'll be kicking yourself when you realise that you've left out Mike Spinks! Easily done though, I'd have him second I reckon.
Among the other names you've mentioned, to make it a top eleven I'd have to include Yuri Arbachakov (borderline top ten Flyweight of all time for me), Riddick Bowe, Henry Maske, Ike Quartey, and the brilliant Super-Featherweight champion Brian Mitchell, one of the most underrated fighters of his time (probaby due to being South African, I'm sure you'll agree.
Those names aside, I can't think of any others off the top of my head, but I'm sure some others will be able to add a name or two.
Cheers.

Ignore my Spinks point, JBW! My eyes must be playing tricks on me. Hopefully the rest of my post makes a bit more sense! Sorry about that.

hehe, no worries. Thought I'd let you realise that one yourself. I did forget Pryor but I always struggle to rate him anyway so I'm glad I did.

John L Sullivan maybe based purely on the fact he was the first Heavyweight champ of the gloved era

Ike Quartey has to be discounted; lost only once during his prime, but beaten by Vargas, Wright etc when he cam back after several years out of the game.

Re: Top 5 greatest one loss fighters in history
Completely forgot about Quartey's ill-fated comeback, samevans1. Luckily he wouldn't quite have made my top ten, so my list of Tunney, Spinks, Sanchez, Pryor (who'd slipped my mind, good shout D4), Jeffries, Mitchell, Hamed, Calderon, Arbachakov and Bowe can still stand.
Interesting shout with Sullivan, Ghosty, and I suppose you're right. I probably wouldn't include him though, as virtually all of his best work came under the London Prize Ring Rules and I try to treat those and the Queensberry Rules-era as basically two different sports, more or less. It's open to interpretation though, so nice mention.

Great shout Chris mentioning Mitchell. As an avid ring magazine reader of the 80's i never felt he got the respect he deserved. They were too busy bigging up your Brelands and Frank Tates

I think i would have to strongly consider Kahosai Galaxy. For me, one of the finest Asian fighters theres been.

Re: Top 5 greatest one loss fighters in history
Brilliant shout on Galaxy there, Hawktimeman. Just goes to show that even when you think you've got all angles covered, there's always one or two more that can crop up.
I did an article not long ago on the old 606 regarding the ten finest fighters of all time from Asia, and Galaxy was an automatic inclusion. Great fighter, always good box office value and as good a right hand as anyone from the lower weight divisions across history.

Brilliant fighter Galaxy was and one the many fighters with an annoying early loss on their records, one of my favourite 3 fighters as well.
Given me an idea for a topic tomorrow

Finally I wrote something more than two people responded too!
I was thinking of Ibeabuchi for a moment until remembering he conveniently went mental before having to lose.
