Ireland v Russia Match Thread
First topic message reminder :
Big game for Ireland here. Ireland could be doing with a big win to keep their momentum going heading into a crunch game with Italy. 10 changes from the Australia game.

Did the ref say that he would let the Russian player off for that deliberate knock down?

Re: Ireland v Russia Match Thread
We got a couple of fortunate tries but we're essentially playing well and creating opportunities. Russia are playing quite well though, they are holding onto the ball and their set piece is working. I've really enjoyed this game.
Saying we should score 100 points is disrespectful. No side has conceded that many points in this World Cup.

McFadden took his try really really well.
Anyone know why Buckley is so useless?

Plus we all know earls' try was a forward pass. We will take it.

He said it would have been a yellow card if he didn't play advantage. Ireland scored from it, so it's a moot point. Had the offence ruined Ireland's attack it would have been a penalty and a yellow card.

Re: Ireland v Russia Match Thread
Not bad eirebilly but you have to look at it against the context of the tournament. There was some sloppy stuff like the O'Gara cross kick to the Russian winger, Too poor passes from McFadden, Buckley penalty at the scrum, early lift at the lineout, Healy knock on.
These things will cost us against a better side. The pack haven't shown enough intensity and urgency, Healy and O'Brien apart.
I'd like to see us take them on in the pack a bit and then spin it wide. Heaslip has been quiet again.

Yeah it was very unfortunate for the Russians it wasn't called back. We were lucky, they were unlucky.

He did and I'm glad he did. Sensible refereeing.

How you coping with the Russian Billy?
ooh! Shots of the dressing room....but no one undressing...booooo.
I don't think Ireland will score as much as 100. They will go passed the 50 mark tho.

At 36-0 up, 70-80 points should be a realistic target.
Did anyone hear the ref saying that he will let the Russian player off for deliberately knocking the ball down? Ok Ireland scored from it but that is still a yellow car offense.
It was a forward for Earls try but that what happens sometimes.

No it isn't Notch. This Russia side is very poor. We can't feel sorry for them or let them off the hook. The other sides are all stepping up. England and the ABs were ruthless yesterday and we need to be too. Maybe 100 is pushing it but I don't want to see us drop off in the 2nd half.

I don't either, but there's a difference between saying we should score 60/70/80 and 100. Even in the most dominant displays 100 is exceptionally rare.

I'm all right actually I've gone past the tired stage. Must be the excitement of this game. Blame my neighbours, they decided to have some sort of shindig next door. They had music on until about twenty to three....

Fair point. It was a throw away comment. What I mean is I want to see us be focused and ruthless and put these guys to the sword.

Bah Popov the Russian number 1, had grown a full beard now... when he was playing against new port he was clean shaven and the crowd were calling him Boris Johnson the London Mayor.
Watch his feet when he runs, the go like hell, but he doesnt actually move very far.

Re: Ireland v Russia Match Thread
Those who say these matches are pointless are disregarding what both teams are getting out of it.
For the stronger nations, they can choose to field a full side and go through their paces, or give fringe players game time.
For the minnows, they get a chance to see what it is all about at the upper levels of the game. Next time they get to play in a WC, they will know what is required.
While it may be a bit monotonous for fans of other teams, I think it is a very valuable run out (barring injuries of course), no matter what the score.

Re: Ireland v Russia Match Thread
Cronin is rubbish, nowhere near up to international standard. Flannery is a massive loss and we are totally reliant on Rory Best now to stay fit and keep his excellent form going.
I'd like to see a bit more from Ryan and Cullen in this half.
