Rafatennis - Rome Masters 1000 - 8-15 May 2011
First topic message reminder :
"Obviously I didn't play at my best. I didn't play badly, just normal. But that is not enough against Djokovic." That's the true Rafa! Well, one of them had to lose their streak and it wasn't third time lucky for Rafa against Djokovic.
With a quick turnaround, we are straight off to Rome, with Rafa in a battle to keep his No 1 ranking and take it into the French. The tournament has already started and the draw could prove tough for him, depending on whether potential opponents can take their good form from Madrid onto Rome.
Rafa's first match will be on Wednesday.
Good luck Rafa - dust yourself down and come roaring back. Vamos!

Quick summation for the Rafateers reading tomorrow.
Fantastic performance there by Rafa. Totally focussed, some absolutely marvellous play. Lots and lots to be positive about.

Oh the disappointment of a DF on MP.
Nevermind. Well done Rafa - an excellent hour's work, and applauding his opponent too
Bedtime for me now, up in 5 and a bit hours.
Hurrah for live Rafa!
Night night all, sweet drims

Quite even in the first set ... a really nice match to watch.
But Dolgo ran out of ideas in the second and just didn't know what sort of play to make, so it was easy for Delpo. Good win for him.

This is a lovely article. And nothing other than what we've come to expect from Rafa.
Must admit that I had a wry smile when reading the journalist's quote here.
Not quite what we were used to on t'other side.
Must admit that I had a wry smile when reading the journalist's quote here.
Afterward, Soderling said that an injury he had was too problematic and he should have been smart enough to not even try to play. That's fair, probably accurate. But in the same situation, Nadal would have limped into the interview room, praised the other player, assured everybody that his limp had nothing to do with the result, and then had a cast put on out of the sight of everybody.
Not quite what we were used to on t'other side.

Good Morning all my luvverly Rafateers
Just been reading back on Woofs and Rafan late night...glad you saw it girls and thanks for the report....except for the old girl slur Woofs ...we shall be having words
What a wonderful article about Rafa.....thankyou Haddie just so refreshing that someone in the media sees what we've always known, that Rafa is a decent, well brought up young man .....Think I would have dropped my tray if Rafa had been standing behind me
I read a report this morning about<dimples>and his injury.....it wasn't exactly a walkover for Kohli was it? He's a good pro player and knows his way around a court. Just sour grapes on the other half's part...miserable little
Some people don't know how to lose gracefully....just keep dimples
Is that right Nanado lost...or did I imagine it

Hi everyone That's a great article that Haddie-nuff posted. When that happens to me in a check out line (and sadly it happens a lot) I definitely do not react the way Rafa did.
Anyway, I had Sod going out to Kohli in my picks! Although if I am perfectly honest that pick came more from the heart than the head and never thought I would get it right!
Thanks from me as well for the commentary last night. I read it this morning over my coffee. Far more interesting than the match reports on the web

Re: Rafatennis - Rome Masters 1000 - 8-15 May 2011
Hola! After a successful day in the doubles yesterday it's the turn of the singles again today. Unfortunately Rafa is the "not before 7 pm" match so no live Rafa for us
I was disappointed to see Raonic get knocked out yesterday - I was looking forward to the NBT against Feds. Though maybe by knocking out Raonic, Harrison becomes the NNBT? And who's to say that Feds wouldn't have handed out the same treatment to Raonic as Rafa did in Tokyo anyway? Just a shame not to see what would happen.
Nole is going great guns - I couldn't believe the score against last year's NBT. In fact I was cursing Sky that they weren't showing the match then too late realised that they probably had it on the red button . Oh well.
I've managed to pick up a few points in the Picks game, but all hopes rest with the lower half of the draw still .
Vamos Rafa!

I watched him play last year and he is a very uselful laddie . Nice to watch too : :

Well ... it will be a difficult job, but someone should cheer on the youngster ... just to give him a little support ... that's all.
Congratulations to Team Cuteness for their latest victoree whilst those noted pairings of The Bryans and that ignorant man, Paes are defeated. Shame.
No Rafan ... there won't be a Rafa/Feds fest of tennis tonight as we shall be tucked up in our beds ... however, JMDP is on first on Stadium 2 court so I hope to catch some of that.
Have we seen these from Rafa's presser after he defeated Sweeting?? He is just so CUTE !!! Especially when he saw that he could watch Dangerman on the telly instead of speaking to them ...
(psst ... from the same "safe" place )
Cute
Cuter
even Cuter
I'm watching the telly!! Not answering your dumb questions
Woooo ... action hotting up
Teapot pose
Cheesy catalogue pose

Wooffs You're having great fun with the captions aren't you my sweet. Don't blame you though, you're a natural
Thanks for the pics. I'm definitely having tennis withdrawal symptoms as I am only getting to see highlights when some kind soul posts them as stoopid Eurosport is totally ignoring the men and by the time the men play it's I'm too tired to focus on my tiny notebook screen
Good to see Nole going great guns (if a little scary from a Rafa fan girl point of view!).
Will pop over to the chat thread and see what's going on there :run2:

Morning all my luvverly Rafateers
It looks as if Rafa had one of "those" matches last night .....He's been on FB this morning saying he played a terrible match But a win's a win so he rolls on.
JMDP is looking ominous as is Nole....so Rafa and Feds had better watch their backs
Also well done to Team Cuteness for getting to the Semi's

I haven't seen anything about Rafa's match yet, but if he says he played a terrible match then I'm sure he's speaking the true. Buck up Rafa - we need you to gain some points here!
I'm a bit <yikes> now. Dr Ivo could cause a problem if Rafa's struggling with his serve, potentially Delpo in the semi-final (though he was let off the hook big time by Kohlschreiber in the second set last night) and then maybe Novak in the final - who seems to be in blistering form at the mo. Somebody take these men down!!!!
I've only got Rafa, Feds and Nole left in the picks now - with Rafa due to beat Almagro in this round . I was surprised to see Gasquet knocked out Roddick last night.
Rafa's on again in the small hours so no live Rafa for me - I'll be straight on to teletext the minute I wake up tomorrow morning.
Vamos Rafa!

Morning everyone
Well I finally got to see a bit of live Rafa as his match was still going on when I got up but very stressful way to start the day. I caught the 3rd set tie break on a very dodgy stream but thankfully he came through after Ivo saved a couple of match points. Rafa was very at the end bless him, and judging y the sweaty shirt and position of the bandana by the end of the match that was a pretty good workout for him.
Happy Friday everyone and catch you all later

Good Morning all my luvverly Rafateers
Cats I only saw the result this morning and it looked like one of his <clunk click> matches.....close 1st set....easy 2nd set...and the mother of all sets in the 3rd. I hate Rafa playing T/B mainly because his serve can be so dodgy and it does my blood pressure no good at all
I can imaging him leaping about in that 3rd set.....Vamossing all over the place....bless him
Oh well he's through, and we'll see what happens next, but my is always in my mouth when Rafa plays on H/C
Well done Rafa

Re: Rafatennis - Rome Masters 1000 - 8-15 May 2011
I woke up at 5 this morning and had to get straight up to check the score because I was a bit about it. I was really pleased to see a victory - and yes, it really does look like a rollercoaster of a match! With those big servers though, you just have to have one bad service game, you're broken and bang goes the set. So well done Rafi <applause>.
Up next...Delpo
These two haven't played since Rafa was last out of sorts and if I remember correctly Delpo has won the last three - Miami 2009 (where Rafa snatched defeat out of the jaws of victory), US Open 2009 and then one of the other hardcourt Masters that autumn. Now Delpo is on his way back from an injury...and is Rafa himself yet? Should be a humdinger, and as it will be on Saturday because a gathering on the darkside is called for?
And to top it all of there's a Roger/Rafa doubles semi-final tonight - at 1 am our time. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!
Vamos Rafa and Team Cuteness!

Re: Rafatennis - Rome Masters 1000 - 8-15 May 2011
Good morning all my lovely Rafateers!!
and again .....
Sometimes its easier watching Rafa when you're tucked up in bed in the middle of the night!! Anyhow ... here's the vid clip of the FINAL SET TIEBREAKER??!!!???
Rafa's yikesy TB
I know the object of the game is beating the guy stood opposite, and all methods count. But Dr Ivo ... people can try and convince me that there's more to his game than <serve>, but the very nature of the sheer number of 7-6, 7-6 victories he has (especially on hard courts) says it all to me. Yep, as Rafan says, a player just has to have one dodgy service game and its set over.
Rafa must have found a way in the second, because that scoreline is pretty dominant, and I've not read yet to find out what happened to take them to a TB. But oh my word ... I would have been sick with nerves watching that. You can tell by the looks on the tournament owners' faces how yikesy it was ... and how much they wanted Rafa to win!!
He didn't half set himself up well for those last couple of MPs with some great, aggressive tennis ... and oh yes, as Cats said ... he went mental at the end. Sank onto his famoos <hmmm hmmm> and pumped the air. Then he was all Tigger, bouncing about the court and fist pumping ... I think he just needed to get some of that hyper energy out. He did, of course, take the time to applaud Karlovic off the court, as only Rafa does. And then a lonnnnnnng shirt change.
Relief, eh?
And we only have it all to do against Potro now ...
Potro's obviously playing well, and if he's back to his best, then great. But I'm not so sure yet. Equally, when Rafa has a pounding against someone, it kicks him on so much to make sure that never happens again. But what a cracking match that will be. Has anyone any clue yet as to what time it might be on?
<clunk><click> Rafateers ... but Vamos Rafa!!!

So was the lady in the FBI cap and the guy sitting with her tournament directors? If so, are they not supposed to be neutral? I thought they were honorary Rafateers judging by the dismayed looks on their faces when Rafa didn't put the game away the first couple of times.

Lovely Cats
I'm not going to go looking for the name of the guy that owns the tournie, but one other prominent person is Charlie Passarell, the former player. And he was there <yikes>ing away.
According to the Sky commies, the owner of the tournie is a huge Rafa fan, and always turns out to see him play. And even though he's the owner, he's not shy about showing who he supports. Equally, for the sake of the tournie, I'm sure he wants the World No. 1 in the final too.
I don't think you need to show neutrality, and I guess this guy is there as much as a fan as anything else. I mean ... there's plenty of others who don't hide their Federer light under a bushel, so why not Rafa.

Wooffs Firstly, glad you had a lovely day yesterday
Don't get me wrong. I'm all for people cheering on our boy, whoever they are. And when it's the tourney director even better, just proves what we know. Rafa rocks

Thanks for that llink Wooffie.. it was obviously from Teledeporte Spanish tv but it was far too late for me.. I had to laugh at Charlie Passarel and "whoever" (who looked as though he was about to have a cardiac arrest) they may be fans of Rafa but they looked like they had bet their life savings on him winning. The look of relief was amazing

Cats I know you weren't being critical about obvious cheering on of our boy.
Haddie ... as I said, not only are they fans, but I think they really, really wanted Rafa in that semi-final for the weekend and NOT Karlovic.

I enjoyed watching that TB Woofs ...only cos we knew he'd won it.....lovely to see so many other people get as nervoos as we do
Rafa really loves a scrap...in fact in a way it does him good, and brings out the best in him....he's ready to stay out there all night if necessary and you could see Dr Ivo folding under the pressure....if the serve goes, there isn't a lot to back it up. Ivo is like a lot of these very tall big serving players, he relies on the serve and has to have a lot of time to set themselves up to hit another shot. He did attack one of Rafa's second serves, but for me hasn't got the consistency to play well shot after shot.
I love it when Rafa bounces around after a match.....that's why people respond to him...he gives his all out on court and shows his delight when he comes through a scrap....keep going Rafa

The bottom line is that he is such a competitor..I believe its not so much the will to win but the will not to lose that is his strength... even when his best tennis deserts him and all looks lost his mental strength and courage makes him dig so deep to find that little bit extra This as much as his talent is what makes me a fan.. and what sets him apart from any other player

Hi Haddie ...Rafa's "Olweys try mi bist for a victoree" is what sets him apart isn't it?....I've seen some scrappers over the years....Connors is always the one that springs to mind, but even he can't hold a candle to Rafa for emotion.
That's what I love about him besides everything else.....his will to win, to always try. He hasn't got a coventional game, and no one else plays like he does which makes it so exciting to watch. Just love the bones of him

You can tell who does most of the gabbing on here, even whilst keeping the wheels of industry turning
I think Rafa's semi-final match will be the first one on tomorrow – so probably about 8 or 9 pm UK time if they start at 1 or 2 pm in Indian Wells. I can't wait to see this match up after so long. It's nerve-wracking, but I hope the last two matches have got Rafa into his rhythm, and I'm sure he'll be feeling like he's got a point to prove.
I'll be <clunk-clicked> into the Rafacoaster, for sure!

Rafa and Delpo up first tomorrow. And <yikes> if I get this time difference wrong, but I think we're 7 hours ahead so 6 pm our time.

Good morning Rafateers
I think you are right Wooffs...a 6 pm start for us .
Rogerstan beat Rafamarc in the doubles last night - shame. Rafa double-faulted on set-point . Get it out the way Rafa, we don't want that tonight!
I loved the roaring pictures from the Dr Ivo match - fabulous.
How's everyone's picks going? I've got three of the four finalists - but I guess most people have. Nole enters a battle for the No 2 spot again against Roger tonight - he's beaten him easily the last two times and seems to be flying at the moment.
Roll on 6 pm!
