The Greatest Australian ODI XI
The Australians are the most successful ODI country of all time and have produced arguably the best collection of ODI Cricketers than any other team, so picking their best ever ODI side shouldn't be easy.
Here's mine.
Gilchrist
M Waugh
Ponting
D Jones
Hussey
Bevan
Symonds
Warne
Lee
McGrath
Mcdermott

i thought about him, but watson's record is very good, and he gives a genuine all round part to the team, then i wouldnt know what batsman to leave out

Well, for me, Ponting is the best Aussie ODI batsman there has been, so I would pick him over any other bat but each to their own and they have been blessed with some very fine players.

Dorothy, excellent shout on Hayden, not sure how I forgot about him. I'd replace Jones with Hayden in my lineup.

It was Hayden or M Waugh for me but I always enjoyed watching Junior bat, so he got the nod.

Re: The Greatest Australian ODI XI
Gillchrist (obv)
M. Waugh (loved watching him bat, decent offie, brilliant fielder)
Ponting (Aus's best ever one-day bat I reckon)
D. Jones (the 2nd best)
Hussey
Bevan
Symonds (all 3 could interchange position really... Bevan the finisher, Hussey could play any role, Symonds could smash but also build his innings really well)
Warne (Hogg not far off, but Warnie's magic...)
Lee (terrific ODI record)
McDermott (miserly)
McGrath (obv)
Unlucky to miss out: Watson, S. Waugh (death bowling extraordinaire at start, then of course that knock in 99), Hayden. Guys like Bracken, Bichel, Gillespie had great periods but not so much longetivity. Someone like Clarke isn't quite that good IMO.

Re: The Greatest Australian ODI XI
Folks - some fine names mentioned above but please be aware that ODIs started in the early seventies and not with the launch of Sky! The likes of Lillee and the Chappells need to be in the mix at least ....

Re: The Greatest Australian ODI XI
Nathan Bracken was very close to my team.
A very good ODI bowler and a leftie.

Bracken, Johnson, Fleming, Alderman and a couple of others would have strong cases for inclusion.

As you say Stella, there's a hell of a lot of good players to choose from.
I mean a 2nd XI (based on my choice of first XI) of:
Hayden
Waugh M
Chappell G.
Clarke
Martyn
Lehmann
Haddin(wk)
Hogg
Johnson
McDermott
Alderman
would give any team a good game.

Re: The Greatest Australian ODI XI
And the Aussies use to have a 'B' team in the 90's.
Players like Ponting, Hayden, Mcgrath and Law were part of that set up.

Hoggy - so Ian Chappell doesn't get in either your 1st or 2nd XIs. Good luck when you tell him!

Did think about him, but he only played 16 matches.
He'd probably be in my 3rd XI though

Struggling for openers a bit (Boon, Langer, Wessels?). But with the likes of Alan Border, Steve Waugh, Ian Chappell, Ian Healy, Simon O'Donnell, Nathan Bracken, Damien Fleming, Cameron White, David Hussey, Andy Bichel, Tom Moody, Jason Gillespie. Paul Reiffel, Peter Taylor etc to choose from, I reckon the 3rd team would still be pretty awesome!!!
I mean, who'd be in a English all-time ODI 3rd team? Chris Tavare and David Capel????

Stella - don't sit back yet! Rod Marsh, hard hitting, catching and drinking wicket keeper batsman of the seventies, certainly deserves a game. You're going to have to come up with a 4th XI ....

Thanks Guildford.
Even that fourth team have some pretty successful ODI players and I haven't even got to Hogg and Thomson.
Proof that no other team has produced as many good ODI players as the Australians have.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane Stella. I loved to see that you put Dean Jones in your team. He was one of the most exciting ODI batsmen i have ever seen. I often watch old YouTube clips of him.

My pleasure.
Jones was the first player I remember making two's into three's in ODI's. There were possibly others before him but not that I recall.
