Re: 2011 World Series
could be a decisive game tonight
series tied 2-2 and both teams with their #1 pitchers starting , whoever wins tonight takes a massive advantage into the last 2 games

texas get the win and go back to st louis 3-2 ahead
gotta make texas big favourites now, altho tonight they really trod a fine line at times , three innings in a row the cards had the bases loaded and couldn't score a run.

Re: 2011 World Series
It's the Rangers' Series to lose now but it depends on which Rangers show up in St. Louis. They clearly have the pitching to take two in a row while leaving a lot of Birds on the bases, but they also slipped up just enough to put them there in the first place.

Want the Rangers to win, but a Game 7 on the 20th anniversary of the Jack Morris game? That would be something.

Re: 2011 World Series
The amount of Cards left on bases was almost criminal, if you count that and game 2 when Rangers scored 2 in the 9th to win, then it seems the luck is with the Rangers.
Saying that, think Cardinals will win tomorrow taking it to a game 7.

Congratulations to the Texas Rangers, who at this moment (when i'm going to bed), at the end of the 7th lead 7 - 4. After back to back homers at the start the 7th. Been a weird game, with mistakes galoure, but Texas deserving to lead, and proving that they are certainly Clinical.

Re: 2011 World Series
tiger you really made a huge mistake going to bed
what an incredible game this is
cards 7-5 down bottom of the 9th with 2 on and david freese at the plate with a 1-2 count , down to their last strike. freese gets one just over cruz's head in right for a 2 run triple and ties the game
top of the 10th hamilton hits his first homer of the post season with a man on to put the rangers back up at 9-7
bottom of the tenth, cards get a run early , pujols gets intentionally walked with 2 outs to bring berkman up with men on 1st and 2nd, again hes in a 2 strike count and singles to get the man in from second and tie it up again
here we are in the 11th and anything can happen

Rich, i know, first thought when i got up and read the score and about the game the first word that came to my head was b******s.
Didn't think the Cards would come back, and in was wrong, should have believed my first belief that the Cards would win.
Who do you fancy tonight, i think it's to close to call, and has been a great world series for it.

Re: 2011 World Series
after last night i wouldn't want to try and predict anything
both times in the 9th and 10th the cards were down to their last strike and got the hit to tie things up, doing it once was remarkable, twice was unbelievable
after the extra day off due to the rain break there will be few restrictions on any of the pitchers so could be a wild night for pitching changes

Re: 2011 World Series
I don't know if British tv mentioned it but, between late innings last night, FoxSports here in the States ran a couple of clips comparing this Game 6 with historic Games 6: Carlton Fisk's 12th-inning "go fair!" homer in '75, Reggie Jackson's Ruth-tying (and Pujols-yet-to-tie) 3 homers in '77 and, most (in)famously, Bill Buckner's 'tween the legs goof in '86.

Camry,
Where abouts are you? Eastern time zone??
Must admit, I boycott the World Series when games are destined to end around midnight. Plus hate Buck (his Dad used to be terrific though) and McCarver.

DC, to be exact.
I usually tune out about 10 PM so I was looking forward to the Cards rolling over and quitting so that I could. But they and I were a little too stupid for that.

Apologies, Camry, I should have remembered from the 9/11 exchange.
Still angry with you lot for taking our Expos away, mind!
For a sports-mad parent to take his children at short notice to watch sports superstars at a nominal rate from seats just behind home plate, going to watch Vladi, Vasquez and Co was the gift that just kept on giving!

Sounds like the Yanks/Mets of my childhood; a father could take his kid to their games a dozen times a year back then. At today's prices you'd file for bankruptcy if you did that, and that goes for the Nats/O's as well.
Btw, MASN here has been showing reruns of the '70 World Series between the O's & Reds. One of the games in Cincy is in black & white and includes a CBC News interruption about a kidnapping of a Canadian government official in Montreal. Ring any bells?

Re: 2011 World Series
Camry,
That's before my time; only been in VT fifteen yrs, before that in CNY for almost twenty and was more Toronto orientated back then, plus Kingston! which is where our CBC feed came from.
Yankee Stadium now is ridiculous, especially if you have to travel. Cost of tickets, then $12.00 for a skunk Heineken and downhill from there.
But certainly want to go to Camden Yard.
For value, it's tough to beat the SkyDome/Rogers Centre, not much ambiance but reasonable prices, both for seats and tucker/drinks and great seats even for big clubs. Did a Red Sox/Yankees Tuesday/Wednesday a couple of years ago with family of four, seats between the dug-out and 3rd base. Even with hotel rooms it didn't break the bank.

What. A. Game.
Proof that baseball is the best American sport there is. And now we have the one thing we all want - Game 7 in the World Series. One game, winner takes all. All pitchers available, ready to pitch as if there's no tomorrow.

Carpenter going for St.Louis on three days' rest. Not optimistic, but LaRussa has to go with his best. He'll miss Matt Holliday who has a strained wrist.

That was fantastic! I love it when it goes to game 7. (apart from when my team is involved, and then I want a four game sweep - I must have aged 20 years watching the Bruins win the Stanley Cup back in June).
And seeing as I consider hockey a Canadian sport, yeah I totally agree that baseball is the best American sport there is. I've been to games which have been a battle of the pitchers and very low scoring; and I've been to games where both teams have been knocking the ball out of the park in every inning. All have been great to watch.

Your better off with Thorne and Sutcliffe and the MLB feed, IMO! I dont like Buck anyway but he was terrible last night, I lost count of the times he couldnt even get a complete sentence out of his mouth. And then at the end he just used his fathers '91 call... "We'll see you tomorrow night" Very unoriginal. A small gripe I know but it was tough to listen to him for 4 1/2 hours last night.

Given how both went through their bullpens in Game 6, I'd say Game 7 will either have no more than three runs scored or no less than 20.

Re: 2011 World Series
After that first innings, thought we were going to get a repeat of last night. Seems to have settled down with Cards 3 - 2 up at the bottom of the 4th, so by my reckoning the next 2/3 innings will be fairly quite with only odd runs being scored, before exploding again.

Re: 2011 World Series
cards win
little bit of an anti-climax tonight after last nights game
texas really shot themselves in the foot with letting hitters on base with walks or hit-by-pitch and going on to score
few comments being made about whether it was right for a wild card team to get home field advantage for the world series and whether the all-star game win should determine that

Re: 2011 World Series
After what was in my opinion the best world series since the Angels/Giants, congratulations to our 2011 world champions.
The ST LOUIS CARDINALS
Who completed a fantastic end of season, from being 10 1/2 games out.
Bad luck to the Texas Rangers, who contributed to this fantastic series, and lost the world series for the 2nd year running.
From the 2nd game when Texas winning by scoring 2 runs in the 9th, the St louis blowout in the 3rd game, last night amazing end to a game (apparently, i was as sleep after the 7th).Everything you could want from a baseball world series has featured is this one.
Congratulations again to St Louis.
Although do agree with Rich, does seem abit strange the way the destination of the games is decided, maybe the team with the best season record?

Congrats to the cards on winning a fantastic WS. The fifth inns was decisive in this with Texas pitching allowing cards on without any hits. More heartbreak for the rangers.
Home field advantage decision probably should be changed imo, the team with the best record in the regular season would be a better way, tigerrobins. In Japan it alternates between the two leagues- Central League gets it on years ending in even numbers and the Pacific League on odd numbers.

isn't that how it used to be in mlb as well with the alternating years ?
if selig wants to make the regular season count more then the team with the best record has to get home advantage
i dont think it makes that much difference to how players approach the all star game having it decide home field advantage anyway

Agree rich,
Regardless, Texas seemed rather to capitulate last night, as if after the 5th their gig was up. Perfectly happy to see any team associated with Bush lose and the Hicks legacy just seals the deal.
Now, Your hot stove league can really get going!

well should be some activity over the next few days as most of the options issues are tied in to having decisions made within a few days of the end of the world series
as well as the exclusivity for free agents with their current teams
not that i expected him to go elsewhere anyway but the cards winning i think will guarantee pujols stays in st louis

Indeed, 'twas and well should be once more.

Which brings up the issue of tie-breakers, in case they have identical records.

The deciding-the-world-series-home advantage b/s is a cheap ploy to get people to watch the All-Star Game.

certainly one of the biggest turnarounds in a clubs fortunes
25th august they were 10.5 games behind in the wild card race , looking like having no chance of even making the playoffs and maybe seeing la russa retire as manager and losing pujols in free agency
2 months later they are world series champs
