Favourtie poster from 606
Hi all,
As there is not much significant tennis activity going on at the moment and as per tenez this forum is going downhill, so I thought of posting this lighthearted post.
We all have (most of us) come from 606. This is the version 2 of 606. Pretty much everything similar but we cannot rate the posts here. I remember that CP, UE were jostling for the one star ratings.
I really liked Duggie from 606, initially I had a tiff with him but later I realised that he was a very sound and logical poster. I too had mu shares of arguments and discord on 606 but it was fun. Although tenez did do a post on 606 pseudo but the new members are not aware of it. If the new members who are not using the same pseudo from 606, they can also take this opportunity to let us know about their past
Share your thoughts please. Long live the 606 community.!

Do u remember Rez? Another anti fed poster. He also used to get quite a lot of one star ratings. Amongst Nadal wums there were quite a few but I remember spaghettihans and ofcourse tenez .
Another one anti nadal poster was delpotro owns the moonballer but since rafa started to beat delpo he vanished.

Prob vanished by changing his then, inaccurate username.
Rez ? I don't believe that name stirs any kind of conversations for me, but I do remember the username.

Duggie was (is somewhere?) a good poster, although he'd probably be lambasted for trying to appear as a balanced poster on here! I always thought that was a good thing.
Honourable mentions to MarcusBackIn... and laverfan who was then, as now, a good, interesting poster.

I must agree that laverfan is the most balanced poster on the current forum. But there might be few (actually two) who will disagree with that

Re: Favourtie poster from 606
I personally liked the WumHunter StoneyIsle. (Jubba are you listening? )
DuggieToo an absolute favourite. Inspirational.
BarryStar, BB, Nameless, Catalan Power, (fun despite his anti-Federer tone - is he Simple Analyst?), Bourne, MarcusInKensington (Is/was he JuanMarcusDelPoirot? - hope his newborn daughter is doing well.)
Does anyone recall Sugar Harris (Sugah...)?
Many here like Banbrotam, Socal, LuciusMann, TimePlease, Tenez, Positively are good posters (of course with their quirks).
NiTB, Yummy, Amazon, Gallery Play, Tortured Genius, and many others.
Does anyone remember 'Quiet Voice of Reason'?
Some of the 606 diaspora are on MTL.
Before I joined 606, saw the tail end of Tennis Ghandi, Tennis Veritas, Impartial and many others.
WoW, very grateful to you for reviving this and refreshing some excellent memories.
The love of Tennis is what we have in common. May it continue for long.
For every poster I forget to mention here, my sincere apologies. I blame it on my age and fading memories, more than anything else.

DuggieToo, Laverfan and Chumba (or Bourne) were probably the best posters IMO. They were also some funny WUMs. Potti's Match of the Day threads were brilliant too. I have many fond memories of 606, though not of its final days where it got overrun by the "bad" WUMS (ie those that were just annoying and not remotely amusing).

Re: Favourtie poster from 606
Lots of good ones and I wouldn't like to pick out a favourite for fear of offending anyone, athough andy1000 used to smash Wise_Analysis around with excellent command of facts.
It was Dr_Sincere though who gave me my most enjoyable moment when he declared that Djokovic had won the 1st set from Federer in the 2007 USO final (Nole was 6-5, 40-0 up and serving) only for Federer to come back with 5 straight points and then take the tb.
Dr_Sincere was one of the gang of Wise_Analysis, Impartial_Analyst, chetanpv etc, some of who were the same poster and the opportunity to nail him was unmissable.
606, as you'll all recall, had no edit function so it was up there for good, leaving him open to perpetual mockery. We all came up with the term "Premature Speculation" for his "condition" and whenever he dared to reappear some of us would write concerned articles about his health given his damaging bout of Premature Speculation. He'd not last very long.
Most irritating poster by miles was fantasticbingting, who remains the biggest idiot ever to appear on any internet forum I have frequented.

Who can forget the alliterative genius of Tony Almeida or Mediter and his triple bagle (6-4 6-4 6-4)?
Dr. Sincere's messy 'spejaculation' during the USO Final 2007 was another great highlight.
There was the seles lady from Australia who used to come back with slightly different reincarnations but always went the same way unable to help herself by riding the same old hobby horse to mini-perdition.
Otherwise some nice generous remarks all round on this thread from some of the better posters on 606. Most of us still rub along well enough don't we?

Apart from Polish_mannen, the only one I really liked was Haye1: a truly sublime talent whose expressionist demeanour envisioned the distortion of names and facts as the mean to reach a superior truth.
Another worth mentioning is Saint_Seppi: a poster able to coniugate sport and religious values, who provided costant and passionate support to the underdogs and underachievers of the game.

Re: Favourtie poster from 606
I loved 606 - it was like a great bustling market place at its very best with so many brilliant posters and tantalising threads - pottiella's fabulous match of the day threads which sheltered the gentle tennis enthusiasts on a day to day basis, some of which had little appetite for the hurly burly elsewhere, though of course it was a must for everyone during a major tournament. I loved the Andymoaners' pub threads with those great girls, listen up, flirting and lizzie gently philosophising about life and all things Andy.
I enjoyed empathising with the emotions of fellow TMF fans, yorkieboycanada and vbrege and fedfankim and occasionally sailing forth to 'refute' the gleefully mischevious nonsense of jewel of the east (sadly I only caught the tail end of the infamous Air). Some of the wums certainly helped enrich the experience - honorable mentions to themaineventlads who celebrated TMF in epic verse, and to expertpetch and all his alter egos whose imbecilic outpourings against Fed were amusing enough in their own right, but who provoked some of the funniest responses from all the witty and erudite posters on the board.
Some of the posters I think made the greatest contribution to 606 were Duggietoo (where is Duggie?), Laverfan, banbrotam, bogbrush, Tenez and biscuits along with Clare from the original and best Rafateers thread. Biscuits always made me laugh - I really enjoyed his cryptical look at tennis, fellow posters etc.

While we're at it, what were all the names that the notorious anti-Feds took? I'm talking about the ones who hated Fed because he was supplanting Sampras, nothing to do with Nadal...
Wise_Analyst
chetanpv
Impartial_Lion
Dr_Sincere
Air
Jewel of the East
Mediter (there were a lot of Mediters if I recall correctly)
They were always identifiable by their "irrefutable observations" and by predictions of "chilling warnings" for Federer
others?

Re: Favourtie poster from 606
I can only recall weak_era_luck_equals_Federer atm, though I know that expertpetch, who I am pretty sure was welef too, had many aliases - he just got banned? or discredited by fellow posters so often that he changed his nom de plumes with great regularity, and I just can't call to mind the others. He was like the idiot sidekick to jewel, and they worked quite effectively in tandem! Salutations and 'irrefutable' arguments were definitely some of the trademarks and became catch phrases with all throughout the forum - glad to see that occasionally those phrases are remembered here!
If anyone can pull from the archives the thread about USO 2007 with the Dr Sincere mo, would love to see - I rarely ventured on 606 at that time.

Yes, I enjoyed 606 and posted occasionally. Liked Duggie obviously (would very much like to be able to read posts by him again) and also enjoyed Count Zero; I remember he had a very good (personal?) knowledge of British men’s players especially Boggo. I also enjoyed Addicted to Charlton (I think) who used to write in a ‘Gor Blimey’ cockney sort of way but still managed to be interesting and understandable

He was really enthusiastic initially but eventually became quite embittered. I think he was worn out by all the WUMs.

Yes, thanks Wow, this will be a nice repository for all the old 606'ers.
I'd forgotten about Potty's MoD thread. Pretty much part of the menu on 606 and always relished delving into it.
There was a ranking stats thread and my brain cells can't recall the name of its originator, had a link to his website.....oh every things gone blank, damn it, but it was a great insight into the ranking tussles that went on week by week.
( of course, it was always fun watching the same guy/girl change their psuedo from iiiiiiiiiiii to liiiiiiii then miiiiiiiiii or whatever)

Here is that greatest of articles and posts from 606. Dr_Sincere implodes:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/A26735295
Check out post 20 where the good Doctor announces "First set to the Serb." He follows it up by complaining that he saw reality but Djokovic saw something else.
He returned to the thread the next year to gloat that Federer had been surpassed in the AO by Djokovic and the torch had passed. This was one of the frequent relapses of Premature Speculation he suffered from. He didn't really comment on what happened for the next three years of Slamlessness for Nole and Feds French, etc.

Despite football being my top sport, I joined BBC606 for the tennis and initially enjoyed it very much even with wums like Air, Jewel of the East etc. Duggie was my favourite poster and was a bit of an elder figure. The arrival of a new set of aggressive, tasteless, insufferable and not-in-the-least-bit-amusing wums made me leave for a while.
I returned months later to discover a far more aggressive Duggie obviously worn out by the wums and far lower traffic on the tennis section.
Late 2009 and most of 2010 saw the worst and the irrespressible decline of the forum.

Yes, Dr Sincere was fun, including Wyse Analyst. Wyse joined centercourt for a while and we had great tennis discussions there. I wish Catalan Power was joining here too. Does anyone know where he posts nowadays?
In general, I prefer posters with an opinion as opposed to those who try to please all sides.

Wow,
I agree CP was so annoying. He didn't express tennis opinions that were plausible. Instead he liked to make personal attacks on Federer especially regarding his crying at the AUS open and constantly referred to him as 'shanky'. However he was not simple analyst. They wrote in very different styles. Unbiased Educator was clearly Simple Analyst. The fact that he was asked directly on here on numerous occasions if he was UE, but did not deny the accusation, just confirms this. Not to mention the same, cyclical, grabled, contradictory offerings.

All kinds make a forum, that is why 606 was so busy for so long - the tennis must have been one of the most frequented sections.
But I agree that you need posters who are willing to express themselves and create articles to get any buzz going and encourage people to participate.
wow wrote:Tenez I don't miss cp as he was an annoying wum and did post here by the pseudo simple analyst.

wow - I saw that lydian and left too, and will miss him/her, but that was his/her choice. Tenez contributes many things to this forum and does so regularly, if you don't like one particular argument then either enjoy refuting it, or leave the thread alone. It really irritates me these kind of accusations from posters (not you in this regard) who never actually create a thread when, g*d knows there is enough space to do so, complain that the forum is hijacked in some way - it isn't, start creating another thread and talk about what you want to!!!! Tenez has been blamed, v unfairly, for posters leaving - I even saw him accused of driving socal away when socal has said in the past that he just loves debating and enjoyed discussions full stop - he never minded someone holding a different point of view to himself, in fact he relished it as he said many times. Hope he is back soon because def missed. NITB was on the wrong side of another argument, but if she is temporarily absent because of any poster's comments, it is certainly not from Tenez with whom she rubbed along well
Rant over - but can't stand this witch hunting of posters and pointing the finger. It's cowardly imo.

No CP was no wum. A knowledgeable poster with a dislike for Federer. I don't mind that cause he was frank about it.
Regarding Lydian, he was in a way the opposite of CP in that regard and I did not chase him away...he chose to leave.

Some people have only got themselves to blame, esp when bringing previous from 606.
We all started with a fresh, clean slate on V2, its a shame that the nasty part of 606 had to rear its ugly head again.
Trouble is, playing Russian roulette with only one empty barrel is gonna hurt.
Leopard, spots and all that.

You know, Tenez, it's possible to have favourites in Tennis and other sports but still appreciate what others bring to the game without the need to denigrate, deride and even slander. I remember you had run-ins with Duggie due to an inability to grasp this fact.Tenez wrote:In general, I prefer posters with an opinion as opposed to those who try to please all sides.
It's interesting you say you like people with an opinion cos I don't really believe you do. Anyone who doesn't share your patent dislike for Nadal and his game, to you, hasn't played the game and isn't fit to comment on your posts. Your exchanges with Lydian ( who's a fair poster until you get aggressive or insulting on her knowledge) and me are clear examples.

Re: Favourtie poster from 606
you're welcome Tenez.
While I'm at it, the other thing that drives me insane is the complaint that 606v2 is becoming like 606 usually issued by some of the most earnest and sensitive posters around. 606 was fractured, and we have only a small contingent over here - it would be wonderful if v2 was ever as vibrant, argumentative, funny and wise as the original was on an average day.
The above examples show a small part of how entertaining 606 was because of the oft good humoured tolerance, but mostly the robustness of the posters and their humour. Cull the whining is what I say
Jubbahey - what? I am sorry if you think I am targeting you, but quite frankly it is nearly all I ever hear you say. Leave Tenez alone - I know the point of view you object to re the physicality of the game, but he writes an awful lot of very interesting stuff as well - he contributes and doesn't whine and finger point the whole time. And please don't assume you are speaking for all of us - quite frankly I find some of the anti one particular poster stuff akin to bullying, and cowardly bullying at that because it is certain posters all clustered together and hiding behind each other's opinions.

I don't mind a punch up on here. Sometimes it is good to slug it out.

If opinions are balanced, that doesn't necessarily mean a poster is trying to please all sides.

mthierry - I will miss Lydian too, but s/he gave every bit as good as s/he got in exchanges with Tenez. S/he decided to leave on their own account, prob cos they were fed up with same argument - but that was Lydian's choice to engage with it continually or not - Lydian was not chased away, s/he could have easily decided to start own threads (I begged L too, but s/he wasn't interested enough in the forum to do so).
Lydian questioned Tenez as robustly as he did L, and in fact usually began the more pointed responses.

Lydian is a great poster. If only he and Tenez could compromise on views. It can be like a Spanish Bull Fight Tenez will love that.

Cp was a wum and very annoying one
Well I posted on 606 for 6 years or so without having much problem there but suddenly wooffie and her friends ganged to have me banned but there was frankly little or no reason to it. And regarding CentreCourt, that was clearly a joke cause you had more mods than posters there and the new founder kicked the best posters out there like superbrat (anyone remember her?) and since then the forum is made of 5 members whose favourite topic is women's double and the ups and downs of Koehler/Marosi.
I am glad to see that some good former CC members post now regularly here such as Greasepipe or SirFred too.
