Cristiano Ronaldo. The best player in the world?
In a little over two seasons Ronaldo is just two short of a hundred goals for Real Madrid in all competitions. It has taken him just 102 games to reach 98 which is simply astonishing.
He is already only seven goals short of the fat Ronaldo's Real total. And all this has been achieved by a player that is not recognised as a traditional centre forward!
Say what you want about the sometimes prancing ponce (and you probably will) but boy is he some player and how these shores miss a player of this calibre.
The consensus seems to be that Leo Messi is the best player on the planet right now but the winker is surely entering that bracket?

I would put him as second best, as an all around player Messi just edges him for me, but it's still pretty close.

I think Lionel Messi is very good, but I think what would be interesting is if you swapped them around I think both would struggle, Messi wouldn't have been as successful in the Premier League, but I can't see Ronaldo's selfish style fitting into Barca's mould.

I think Messi would be fine in the Premier League. He's used to having lumps kicked out of him and gets on with it, if you look at who he plays similar to in the Premier league I would say David Silva, and he's having a stormer, but Messi is better in every way than Silva.

I don't think either player have done themselves justice at international level though but saying that I'd put Champions League football on a higher plane than that anyway.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Ronaldo return to England sometime in the future but I can't see Messi ever leaving Barcelona.

I was thinking the same thing and him having played for Utd would have no bearing whatsoever to the swine!

How did he get on tonight, it was 3-0 after half an hour and he was bitching about the park coz he hadn't scored yet, forgot about the game after that

Think City would love to get one over on Man Utd by getting him. It's not like they haven't got the money however the ridiculous amount of players there is nowadays at City that are all incredible would need to all step down to C. Ronaldo because of who he is.
Could perhaps pose a couple of problems in the same way that Aguero caused a mild stir when he first joined as well, as the players that aren't paid quite as highly questioned as to how much they were getting paid seeing as Aguero is on 250K a week (Not bad)

Messi is an overall better player than Ronaldo, in a way Ronaldo's selfishness (which is why he is on that goals total) is what makes him not as good as Messi, you would always pick the team player for your team

Re: Cristiano Ronaldo. The best player in the world?
Ronaldo in most other eras would be the best in the world, he's just unfortunately been about in the same era as possibly the greatest footballer to ever put on a pair of boots.
Re: Cristiano Ronaldo. The best player in the world?
Ronaldo:
11/12: 14 games, 16 goals, 7 assists
10/11: 51 games, 53 goals, 14 assists
Messi:
11/12: 14 games, 16 goals, 9 assists
10/11: 47 games, 50 goals, 21 assists
Both incredible players playing fantastic football. As someone mentioned, if you wanted a player to go in to a team and create and give, you'd go for Messi. But if you want someone upfront who can tear apart any defence, I'd go for Ronaldo. Like Hero said, it's amazing that Ronaldo isn't considered best in the world, even though if a player like him had been around earlier he would have been. What's scary is that this season both look as if they could break last seasons records.
Ronaldo could also break all kinds of international records. He's only 17 goals off being the top Portugese scorer of all time. I'm not sure whether I'm over-hyping him, but if Moutinho and Nani can provide enough support, could the Euros in 2012 be where Ronaldo finally shines on the international level?

Re: Cristiano Ronaldo. The best player in the world?
While i agree that in my opinion Messi is just the better player, generally for the reasons already said about him being more of a team player. When you have the likes of Villa, Xavi, Iniesta, Fabragas etc, it's slightly easier being a team player.
So the question is, How do you think they would do, fit in if they played for each others side ? Ronaldo at Barca, Messi at Real?

Re: Cristiano Ronaldo. The best player in the world?
If Ronaldo had played for last seasons Barca they'd have still won the Champions League and La Liga double no problem. The only trophy they failed to net was the Spanish cup which Madrid won from a ...Ronaldo goal.
Would the tables have turned had Messi turned out for Madrid? I'm not so sure.
The point being that the Barca midfield is the difference between the two sides.

Whilst i agree that Barca midfield is the difference between the sides, And Barca would proabably still have won the double if they had Ronaldo instead of Messi.
I personally think that Ronaldo would upset Barca's style of play more than Messi would Reals. Because Ronaldo is more of a selfish, personal glory type player, that would upset Barca's team ethic, where as Messi would bring that team ethic which could be just what Real need.

Re: Cristiano Ronaldo. The best player in the world?
Messi will always get the plaudits but Ronaldo edges it for me mainly because Messi is performingly phenomenally but in one of the greatest club sides ever and certainly the best in the world today by a long shot. How hard is it to look good when you've got Xavi and Iniesta around you laying it on a plate?? Ronnie's in a good but not great team achieving mind-blowing scoring records. And the end of the day, he's the one I'd rather have in my team for that reason.
