Will Carling backs Nick Mallett as possible England coach

E-mail this to a friendPrintable version Mallett coached the Springboks to a record-equalling 17 successive Test wins Will Carling thinks former Italy coach Nick Mallett is the leading contender to become England team manager should Martin Johnson leave the post.
Johnson's contract expires in December and may not be extended after a dismal World Cup both on and off the pitch.
"Mallett is my top choice, he would be extremely good," former England captain Carling told BBC Radio Five live.
The 55-year-old, who has also coached Stade Francais and South Africa, left Italy after the World Cup campaign.

So the post say that Will Carling supports NIck Mallet(IF MARTIN JOHNSON) leaves the post.
Surley the RFU will do any thing and every thing they can to try and keep MJ rather than saying thats it, off you go.
But even if Martin Johnson did decide to leave the post, would Nick Mallet do a better job than MJ has done in the next 4 years going into 2015 Rugby World Cup.

I'm really not sure about Mallett, a good coach certainly, but would he bring the vision and gameplan that England need to advance. I'm concerned that although he might tighten certain aspects of the team up and make us more consistent performers, he wouldn't do enough to allow us a chance of winning the WC. Not that I'm saying Johnson could achieve that either.

maj,
There seems to be a whispering campaign amongst a plethora of ex-players, managers and English journalists who (carefully) whilst not exactly proposing MJ's imminent dismissal/resignation are riding stalking horses.
Flim flam and rhetoric is how I see it.
I really think that the RFU leadership needs to be sorted first. Then the elephant in the room that is SCW 'try or no-try' conundrum.
Then an agreement on the manager role in relationship to coaching team.
Then let MJ decide whether to accept/re-apply for the job.

That might take awhile to sort out (particularly the way the RFU does things) Portnoy - still makes logical sense - which is probably why the RFU will more likely sack Johnson, bring in someone else then create a post for SCW over their head, change the rules of management and then blame the new manager for the balls up in the next 2 years.

Nick Mallet had a 71% win rate with Boks 2000-3.won one match out of nine versus the All Blacks in those years.

The Anybody but Johnson brigade is gaining momentum.
