Troon Golf Courses
Meeting up with a couple of my old Uni mates in Troon this Friday for a round.
Any recommendations for which course to play?

Doon and liegerwoods both play there, I've played them all and my fave id Darley (out of the municipals) Are you considering the private clubs as well?

Darley is a good call. Lochgreen is nice too. If money is no object and you can get on, go for the Old Course. Also worthy of consideration are Barassie, Irvine Bogside, Western Gailes, Glasgow Gailes, Prestwick or St Cuthberts.
So many to choose from.

I played the Old Course once, - i very rarely play quality courses, This was easily the best i have played. Helps with a Friend whos dad is a member, and i am sure it did not cost us a penny. They looked after us in the clubhouse to.

Another decent track is West Kilbride, probably a bit cheaper than the private courses in Troon and only 15/20 mins up the road.

I've also got a trip down that neck of the woods next summer and we are looking for 3 courses to play. 12 or 13 of us of varying standard.
We liked the look of Rowellan, and have heard good things about Western Gailes, but would be great to hear any suggestions or opinions

Re: Troon Golf Courses
Good advice already.
The Cooncil courses are now in 'winter mode' so forward tees and a bit messy but still great value for money. Lochgreen is not so good in the winter so best bet is Darley, Fullarton is a good wee course if you want a quick round.
Good deals at the moment on Turnberry Kintyre and Dundonald is you want to play the toughies. Both the Gailes courses are first class. I would definately skip Rowellan this winter.
Girvan is also a fun course, first 9 is a Braid links and 2nd 9 parkland.
If it is weekend play I'd stick to the muni's.
Really peaing down at present [Wed eve] after a fantastic spell of weather.
Gareth , you should have been here last week!!

I played Dundonald about 5 years ago and thought it was fantastic, a proper test.
It's been in financial difficulties recently, so I hear green fees are good value.

If you go to the Golfsouthayrshire web site you can book a tee time online.

Re: Troon Golf Courses
Of the ones I've played there's not one I haven't thoroughly enjoyed, played the Darley with Doon and it's a seriously good test and a muni price too. Have played Dundonald several times and love it. It's fairly generous off the tee but long(ish) and big tricky greens (have a look at their website for late deals). Loved Western Gailes too but in the winter (or at least when I played it) you had to take your ball off the fairway to the semi on some holes to protect certain landing areas. Old Prestwick do similar in winter.

play the bitch... i mean darley.

im squeezing a round in on darley on friday morning..weather permiting.
the best value for me tho is dundonald. you can get a fourball for £120.00 and it is a real quality track

Thanks for the tips, thought of Lochgreen, but will go with Darley.

What Edinburgh leisure course do you normally play?
As a fellowow card holder I might check out the troon courses at some point.

Doon
I love links golf in those conditions. When I was up at Carnoustie in Sept, I hit driver, 3W, 5 iron into the 17th then coming back on the 18th in the opposite direction I hit 3W, lob wedge on a 445 yard hole

Mac, usually Silverknowes/Craigintinny/Carrickknowe as they are handy to/fro work and home. Will also play Braids Hill whenever possible, gorgeous course-but most awkward in terms of locale.

I was in Troon today at the g'kids school show [oh joy].
When passing through I did spot a couple of golfers bent double on the 8th at Fullarton. Was that you Gareth ?

Re: Troon Golf Courses
Unfortunately not, due to the weathers the guys got held up at cairnryan docks, so the golf in Troon was cancelled.
We did however get a last minute booking yesterday afternoon at The Golf Lounge in Glasgow and played Pebblebeach.
Cheers for the tips re: courses in Troon, will hopefully get down for a round in the new year.
