Barak Obama lights up St Andrews
Seemingly ultra right students [well young Conservatives] burned an effigy of the President of the USA on the East Beach of St Andrews the other night.
Student dorm staff are concerned about a shortage of white sheets and pillow cases.

It's a poor quality Uni populated by Jemima's and Hugo's so I've no real comment.
Don't really understand what they have to apologise for really though. You can burn an effigy of whoever you like.

Sure they can burn effigies of whom they like but it's everyone else's prerogative to tell them they're idiots and they'll have to deal with the incoming opprobrium. My heart bleeds for them.

What's the problem Navy?, it's not as if they are doing it from the Middle East in some aggressive politically motivated protest and that there might be any possibility of a real threat.
I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be a bit of a laugh. I really can't see any reason for a furore, would anyone care if it was a Cameron, Clegg or Cable effigy?
In Lewes, Sussex they burn an effigy of The Pope and the traditional Guy Fawkes every year, in what is effectively a anti-catholic protest (if you are sad enough to look deeply into the history) that's been going on for years. Nobody cares (and if they do , they get an effigy of them burnt the follwing year). It looks like this Obama thing is just another example of people feigning faux offence again.
Burn (an effigy) of whoever you like. no one cares (or should care)
Incidently, I reckon opening an effigy and flag shop in The Middle East would do a roaring trade. I'm going to suggest it to Duncan Bannatyne.

No problem for me as such. I just think it's moronic and, dare I say it, typical of a bunch of budding Tory oiks. As I said above (but will say again), they can burn effigies of whom they like but they can't then moan if they get verbally mauled for doing so.

They have an annual Wickerman Festival in Wigton.
It is quite well attended highlighted by a music festival.

Mind you I always thought that it was William Wallace who set fire to the Barracks

I just can't really understand that there would be any 'disgusted of turnbridge wells' who would bother to complain. That would actually be more surprising than the act of effigy burning in the first place.
Has anyone actually criticised them for it?
St.Andrews students are pretty irritating at the best of times but this really is a non story.

I think the umbrage is more to do with the Uni Headies wetting themselves about losing American funding.

I wouldn't have thought that would be an issue now that the University can charge £9k a student. UK Students (or rather home counties, Perrin's and Jemima's in St.Andrew's case) are just as valuable as foreign students these days.

Who could ever forget that bit..... only time I ever wanted to be a wall or a door
