It's a shame to change it - I like the distinction between the red of the clay and the blue of the hardcourts (well predominantly)
Television seems to cope just fine with the red stuff - totally agree with Rafa on this.

Re: Blue clay for real?
But I think people like Nadal should be a bit more open-minded.
The only reason why he doesnt like it is because he isnt used to it, he doesnt give any other argument why blue should be bad.
There used to be even green clay in the past, so whats wrong with blue?

Re: Blue clay for real?
green clay used to be on the American courts though didn't it? I am not really au fait with what they use in South America.
Europe has always been red, and it is, to my mind, a shame to change something just for the sake of it or for the spurious reason that it will look better on Chinese television sets!
But of course I do see your point Chydremion that things change and it's not a big deal, or certainly shouldn't be.

Men's tennis has a long way to go in terms of appropriateness of tropies before it scales these heights:

Re: Blue clay for real?
If for no other reason than being the last tournament before the French Open, think this is a ridiculous idea. Surely we want all the players to be optimally primed for their assault on the summer's first Major?
More than happy for them to "play" with the colour of clay but test it out on one of the first tournaments in the clay court season, not the last one before a Major!

Absolutely!
ATP "shortened" the season by condensing tournaments and thus straining the players even more. If the game remains physically demanding as it looks like it's going to for a bit, I can see more and more "big" names pulling out of bigger tournaments not just during Asian swing.

Re: Blue clay for real?
I also think the whole imbalance of surface representation needs to be put right.
Now that the tour is very financially profitable and demanding, ATP need a serious rethink of the entire concept.
Miami and Indians Wells would have to be scrapped out as compulsory, shift clay season forward, introduce two 1000 masters tournaments on grass, and have a well balanced, player and spectators' ,not just $$$-kind both game and business friendly scenario....
I need a rest after this ....
