Thanks for the heads up, KingMonkey. Watched the fight again not long ago but the documentary should be interesting. Also, it's a relief to see an article which isn't about David Ha....Well, you get the idea. Hats off to you, sir!

I remember seeing the fight live, I can vividly remember it happening although not the fight itself so am really looking forward to this. Hopefully ITV won't make a pig's ear of it.

Watched the fight live at the time but (like the second Eubank v Watson fight) have never been able to watch it again. Incredible fight but what happened to McLellan put me off ever watching as I knew I would only be doing so for entertainment and it doesn't seem right. I may watch the documentary though as hopefully it will offer a bit of persepective and distance that wouldn't be there if I just watched the fight again.
One of the weird abiding memories of that night is Frank Bruno sitting in the front row (if memory serves me right he was wearing a cream suit) beating his fists on the edge of the ring trying to get Benn going. Given how much else went on in the fight and the fall out from it, it's strange that my brain would hold onto that memory.

Re: Benn vs McClellan, ITV, Monday Dec 5th, 10.35pm
In which case I'll leave it be. But for that reason and other stories I have read about the bloke I actually find it very difficult to have sympathy for him. More so for Benn who has to live with what he has done.

If it was orange it's no wonder I have such bad memories of the fight. My brain has mercifully wiped the trauma and made me think it was cream.

Re: Benn vs McClellan, ITV, Monday Dec 5th, 10.35pm
I remember his suit as being red. What is hard when watching reruns of this fight is to see how obvious it is that McClellan is in serious trouble a good three, possibly four rounds before it's stopped - he starts blinking alot and keeps pushing out his gum shield- fairly clear sign that he's not getting enough oxygen to the brain. The french ref was a disgrace-how he failed to notice this is beyond me. It would have been interesting to see how all parties involved would have reacted had the fight been stopped as soon as these signs started to show- McClellan himself would have been unaware that he was in trouble, and his joke of a corner didn't seem to notice-I imagine that it would have all kicked off big time. Be interested in hearing what you guys make of the doco (won't be able to see as I live abroad) so please do post your opinions of it

I think you're being a little unfair on the ref there. It's easy with hindsight to say McClellan was showing signs of genuine distress, but I wouldn't have even known what these signs meant back then, and very much doubt I am alone in that. In fact, I would say unless you had knowledge of this kind of injury, then you wouldn't have even noticed when the fight was underway. It is not like he wasn't punching back or had completely stopped defending himself. It was a incredibly brutal and gruelling fight, and to suggest the ref should be picking these signs up in the midst of that is grossly unfair. It was 1995 not 2005. It was a tragic night but as a consequence of it, and other similar instances, the sport has made great strides in dealing with this kind of trauma. I don't think you can look back at that fight with any real objectivity armed with the knowledge of what unfolded.

on the big debate of the day, i recall frank's suit as being bright orange. I was up in the gods at the london area and to say he stood out was an understatement... couldn't believe how huge he looked either, he was like a giant tango man banging on the ring apron.
Similar to an earlier poster i haven't been able to watch the fight since - probably out of guilt as i was baying for blood at the time - I might give this documentary a go though

Re: Benn vs McClellan, ITV, Monday Dec 5th, 10.35pm
Had the pleasure of meeting Nigel on Saturday in Dagenham and wished I had seen an advert for the documentary beforehand and could had tried to get some inside info on it.
As for the fight itself, you can't blame the ref as the G-Man was pushing out his gumshield from as early as the 2nd/3rd rounds and he had Benn down for the 2nd time in the 8th. There was no real sustained dominance by Nigel to warrant a stoppage and Gerald gave up in the end rather than being knocked out.
Great fight but an unfortunate ending and like many on here I was also baying for blood watchinig the fight live but that was partly due to the demeanour of MClellan in the build up to the fight.

Ha, that amused me, he is hideous though, remember watching the thing he did after Michael Jackson died when he held a seance with some of Jackson's fans. Possibly the oddest thing I have ever watched, remember they had one of Jackson's hat on the table, one of the fans said "I can't believe this is his hat" and seemed genuinely stunned by its presence, but seemed to have no issue believing that scouse idiot could talk to a recently dead pop star, odd and distasteful but impossible not to watch.

Always find it hard to trust a man that old who wears an earing.
Would love the ghost of Joe Louis to give him a pasting though, maybe we could convince 'Sam' to set him up?
