Re: Hall of Fame Inductees
I came across Newsboy Brown recently on the HoF thread. He was a bantamweight challenger around the time of Panama Al Brown and holds a win over him there. Certainly nowhere near as strong a claim as Hamed I would have thought.

Re: Hall of Fame Inductees
Newsboy Brown's inclusion is, quite frankly, verging on the disgusting. A decent fighter with a less than credible world title claim (well, a portion of a fragmented title) in a very messy era for the Flyweights. True, he did beat 'Panama' Al, but that aside his career was nothing more than solid.

I think they are running out of Old Timers/Pioneers.

Johnson and Brown? What the hell is that about, far more deserving fighters out there.

I remember at the time Fat Dan saying he would be voting for Johnson.

Re: Hall of Fame Inductees
Hamed's end keeps him out of the hall. There was US interest in him (a British fighter to boot) and he was thrilling crowds. Then he runs into a beaten Barrera (who, it turned out, had plenty left in the tank to give) - and suddenly, once the smoke cleared - the fire that generated it had disappeared.
In time, people will look back and remember that the blaze that went through Kelley, Vasquez, Medina etc - and feel it worthy of respect.
It doesn't help when the likes of Bunce refer to Hamed as "the greatest British boxer of all time". He plainly isn't/wasn't - and it triggers a reaction against his legacy - to avoid rating him highly.

Face it, sooner or later every fighter is going to get in. In 100 years they will probably be discussing how Johnny Nelson got in ahead of some later legend.

Disgrace that Hamed hasn't made it into that lot. Might join forces with rowley to protest at canastota.
Thank God for the Captain's HoF.

Re: Hall of Fame Inductees
Seriously starting to think that captain's v2 version of the Hall of Fame, when it's finished, should be packaged and published and become THE consensus guide to what a Hall of Fame should really be like, and what a fighter needs to do to be eligible!

Re: Hall of Fame Inductees
Curry had to cope with Hearns becoming eligible. The pool for old timers/pioneers is only getting smaller. It’s a flawed system.
