Goings on at Bayonne
At the moment, Bayonne are playing an important game down in Perpignan;there is,however,a lot going on off the field.
Much seems politically biased;I'll try to explain.
Aviron Bayonnais only stayed in the Top14 last season because although they finished 13,Montauban were administratively relegated in their place.
This season they have been pretty good on field and have attracted the eye of Alain Afflelou who owns the French equivalent of Specsavers.Francois Grenet, the UMP mayor of Bayonne, and AA go back along time to when AA was main sponsor at Bordeaux FC,and sold out while the going was good.javascript:emoticonp('')
We now add Bernard Laporte,ex-French coach,UMP minister for sports, owner of a few OK campsites, but linked to a few dodgey casinos.Laporte is looking to continue a political career,as a mayor, and Grenet is in his last term of office.javascript:emoticonp('')
So, Grenet has demanded that the current president, Francis Salagoity, and the board, resign;threatening graffitti has appeared on the walls of the Stade Jean Dauger, which the club rents from the town(hall).Laporte resigned from his recruting position(having brought in Lauaki,Kelleher and others, perhaps Cipriani or Jacques Fourie, in the pipeline) AA decided to follow him thus removing the 4M Euros(reduced to 2.5M for 2011/2012)..
Pressure is on the Basques;they have to decide if the want a "socios"style set up à la Real Madrid, or are the going to sell their soul to external entrepeneurs, who are there to make themselves money and to buy a town hall for Laporte?

Re: Goings on at Bayonne
thanks for the info MOTM, I would definitely favour the Co-operative style perhaps I'm just out of time, because when i think of it that's how the clubs used to be.
But then i'm neither Basque or french

Re: Goings on at Bayonne
ospreylian,
I just saw the latest, and Laporte says he's willing to return to Bayonne if AA goes back; all this stinks local, and after, national, politics. The locals, from what I've read, only have the club, and the local Basque tradition, at heart. In no way are they interested in a buy out that will ruin all that they stand for.
