John Murray Paid $50k For Rios Fight

I knew he wouldn't earns hundreds of thousands but still thought he would of got double that considering all his expenses.

Luckily Rios had to give him another $20k due to him coming in overweight!

Not really a lot that but I supposed he jumped at the chance to fight for world honours. More of an investment fight if you will. Shame he got beaten to a bloody pulp.

$50k is barely more than the £32k he'd get if for winning a Prizefighter tournament. Poor show, and he took a hell of a beating for that cash too.

Call it a loss leader. He handled himself pretty well. Now more interesting fights will be coming his way and he'll earn better purses.

That depends on his management team and how they negotiate his purse. His stock has risen imo. They should cash in on that.

But he's also lost to Mitchell in his previous fight therefore I don't think his stock is any higher than before that fight.

Lost two fights on the bounce but put in a good shift, not sure his stock has moved much more than it was to be honest and he won't be fighting as big a name opponent as Rios in his next bout thats for sure.

Not in his next bout - he will never again fight someone of Rios' calibre again. I think unfortunately he has found his level - European. No shame in that mind.

No completely right, there isn't any shame in that, he;s a decent little fighter with great heart, not many would have stood up to the beating that Rios dished out, his face was a complete mess by the end of it and he did Britain proud last weekend.

Would be suprised to see him get many more opportunities however unless he's used a bit of a gatekeeper type fighter, which is usually good financially.

Agree Alex. It's a shame but not everyone can be a world beater. Got the heart and courage but unfortunately not the skillset.

hard for Murray because that must be one of the two highest pays he ever made, and now he is back at euro level.

I thought Murray did okay for several rounds, even had him up at the midway point, but Rios was just too big, and John's face bruised up badly again.

I'd be surprised if Murray's earned much bigger purses than that in the past, to be honest.

I think we all know that $50k for a world title fight is low beans. Thats about £35k which as someone mentioned is Prizefighter money. He'd have taken less of a beating from that too.

He knew what he was getting into though, John Murray isn't about money, he's about getting titles - and the risk he took was he saw himself winning this, then going on to a football stadium in the UK and having a rematch with Mitchell in 2012.

That would have been nice, if it'd have come off - he'd make a LOT from that fight, so he used the Rios fight as a stepping stone.
