Marat Safin, yes the tennis player, has been elected as MP under Putin's party and will join The Russian President's government.
Pete Sampras predicts that Marat will be Russian Prsident in 20 years!

(Must be an English version somewhere).
What next? Federer President of Switzerland?

And I hope all true sports fans will support these possible appointments.
It makes sense after all: in the old days military leaders would take political office. These modern day equivalents will do a fine job.

Sure but leading 1000s soldiers in battles involves a bit more responsibilty and skills than commanding 4 ball boys on a tennis court. In terms of self control in adversity Safin would not rank very high, not even against his tennis peers, let alone versus Generals who have had the responsibilty of 1000s of lives.

To be a leader one needs a lot of self control, no idea why Safin chose this field, anyways good luck for his new venture.

Self control in leading or planning a battle vs self control on a tennis court (or individual situation) are completely different. Its like the best football players dont make the best managers. Indeed some highly flammable personalities have gone on to become the best leaders and motivators of men - Alex Ferguson anyone? The best military leaders inspire and motivate as well as create plans - although plan creation would usually be done with a ring of advisors. But a team cant inspire/motivate the same - figureheads do that. Figureheads get men to believe in their plans and enact them.
We have no idea what Safin would be like in high office or commanding troops - however, Safin performed at a physical and mental level far higher than most people have ever had to push themselves. To get to the top of his profession - which he did - he had formulate and enact plans, and make the right overall decisions - he knew about winning wars, not necessarily individual battles, to get to the top. Safin had the right attributes to win slams and become the best in the world. He knew then and knows now what it takes to succeed. But regarding the vital ingredient of inspiring and motivating others, Safin knows how important motivation is through his own success, he is also a very charismatic man and so can probably combine his attriutes to get people to vigorously follow and execute his plans - even if they are not necessarily perfect.
After all General Patton (who assumed command of the U.S. Third Army, which under his leadership advanced farther, captured more enemy prisoners, and liberated more territory in less time than any other army in military history) said 'A good plan, violently executed now, is better than a perfect plan next week'.

YAY! Hooray for Safin! What a guy! What a politician he'll be! He'll be a hero, a saviour, a patron sai-
What? Sorry? Did you say he's representing United Russia? Putin's party? The one that's held power for years via blatant acts of corruption and is currently under siege from a Russian public sick and tired of this one way political system? You say Safin's a well-known public face, a puppet to get people back on side?
Oh. Maybe not that good then.
