A world-wide take-over
Andy Murray's former part time coach Alex Corretja has been appointed as the new Davis Cup captain for Spain. Is this just another example of someone with relevant experience being given a role to which they are eminently suited or is it further "evidence" of the secret Murray plot to take over the world mwa ha ha (imaging someone stroking a white cat ominously at this point).
Congratulations to Mr. Corretja - I'm sure Leon Smith is very envious of the options he has to play with.

Understand Greg Rusedski was in for the job but after The Spaniards spoke to the Murrays it was a non starter.
Didn't have enough coaching experience seemingly

606v2 needs a poll to ascertain the credentials of Rusedski and Corretja?

Re: A world-wide take-over
Congratulations to Corretja.
He has excellent credentials for a Davis Cup captain.
During his career, he finished runner-up twice at the French Open (in 1998 and 2001). He won the ATP Tour World Championships
in 1998 and reached his career-high singles ranking of world no. 2 in
1999. He also played a key role in helping Spain win its first-ever Davis Cup title in 2000.

In Spain they know the qualifications needed for such a role. Its a shame here in Britain we don't appear to.

Nah, Greg has more than enough coaching experience. He didn't get the job simply because of Murray's influence over the tennis world.
In any fair world, Greg Rusedski would now be Spain's Davis Cup captain. Well, actually no. He would be splitting his time between being GB Davis Cup Captain, running the IMF and being Secretary General of the UN. But sadly for Greg, these posts don't tend to appoint by suitability for the job, but they go on how well one knows the Murray family.

@ Carrieg, NS, BOO, LF & DJ: can you please not abuse my friend Hawkeye ganging up on her shamelessly like that
@Hawk: you are absolutely right 100% on that, you know what? If you are free we can discuss the issue in further details over a bottle of Champ one of these days.
@ Carrieg: I am not going to say I want to leave you out of this but you'd have to pay your fair share
PS Being a Sharapova lookalike (tall & blond type) would represent an advantage. Many thks.

Yep, his solid coaching experience will prove invaluable. Anyway we should probably go back to agreeing to disagree on this whole issue. The world would be a boring place if we all agreed all the time. I just couldn't resist when I saw the headline

In Spain they also know the qualifications needed for a Fed Cup captain.
Arantxa Sanches-Vicario has just been selected.
Sanchez-Vicario won a U.S. Open title and three French Open trophies
during her career. She guided Spain to all five of its Fed Cup triumphs
during the 1990s.
The 40-year-old holds Spanish records for
overall wins (72), singles wins (50) and -- partnering Conchita Martinez
-- doubles victories (18) in a Fed Cup career that spanned 16 years
until 2002.

I like her. I hope she makes a good captain - I am a little concerned at her lack of relevant experience in terms of mentoring, coaching, managing teams (the obvious skill set) but she could be good.

Would Sarah Virginia Wade be willing to become the Fed Cup coach?
She has three slams, an OBE, an opinion about the qualifications needed, she coached for four years - http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2004/jun/27/wimbledon2004.wimbledon1

This might sound like nit picking as I've said it before but its Fed Cup Captain not coach.

I think a captain-and-coach would be better, do you not think so?

Virginia Wade's record in tennis might not actually be as solid as it once had appeared: http://www.newsbiscuit.com/2010/06/25/virginia-wade-admits-%E2%80%98i-never-won-wimbledon-in-1977%E2%80%99/

Also bear in mind that If Neil Harman knows nothing about it,and hasn't written about it it's not worth knowing.
I read the Times on a daily basis and even have an online subscription for my iPAD - Neil is a "Tennis God" .

Nice try but the the role is Captain. Its not upto you or me to change the title to fit the occupant...

What would you have to change the title to so that Rusedski is actually qualified for the job?

Ha ha! Rusedski was and is the best qualified for the job as Davis cup Captain. Smith has the role of not upsetting Andy but of course he must be given a more politically correct official title...

Re: A world-wide take-over
Haven't we been over this a few times before?
Wasn't it almost universally agreed (everyone besides you, that is) that Leon Smith is far more qualified for the job than Rusedski, and is currently doing an excellent job it seems?
Rusedski has a little bit of experience since from doing his part-time babysitting job, but he's still not there yet.

100% correct. Rusedski MAY be up to job in a few years when he gains more relevant experience of captaining teams. Playing on teams and captaining teams require different skill sets.
