What is it with Wide Receivers ?
Kenny Britt arrested again - are they forced to attend the school of arrogance and obnoxious behaviour before turning pro ?

It's odd isn't it. WR is the position with by far the most divas.

Maybe it's because they get the majority of the touchdowns and the big plays, they think they are the best. You see some strikers in soccer like that.

I just don't know what it is. They're nowhere near as important as a QB or RB, yet they always get into trouble.

It's because WRs are always the ones going "look at me, look at me".
Re: What is it with Wide Receivers ?
You do have 4-6 WR's per roster compared to other positions.

Re: What is it with Wide Receivers ?
I'm worried about the guy we (Lions) drafted this year, Titus Young. When people were talking up the comparison between him and Desean Jackson, he came out some stuff about him not being 'the poor man's Desean Jackson'. If he turns out to be 70% as good as Jackson I will be v. v. happy. Personally, I have a hunch he's going to be a bust. On top of that, apparently he can be a bit resistant to coaching. Nate Burleson posted some picks of the Lions player workouts this week, inc. one of him talking to Young in which Young just looked like a bored schoolkid. He was also suspended whilst in college. I think he thinks he is going to step into the number 2 reciever position ahead of Burleson, which I can't see happening.

Re: What is it with Wide Receivers ?
Arrests and Citations (for offences more serious than a speeding ticket) from 2000-2011 by position.
(Source: http://www.signonsandiego.com/nfl/arrests-database/)
WR - 98
CB - 73
LB - 62
RB - 56
DE - 44
S - 42
DT - 35
OT - 27
TE - 26
OL - 22
DL - 16
DB - 15
QB - 13
K - 8
FB - 8
OG - 6
P - 3
Kind of confirms what has been said already about WR's.
Thats 554 arrests/citations in 10yrs. Seems like a lot to me. Without knowing, i'd guess thats probably more than professional footballers over here - which is surprising given how thick a lot of them can be.

Re: What is it with Wide Receivers ?
Ah, but the NFL has stricter code around behaviour and I bet a lot of stuff, especially in the lower leagues, goes unreported.
What is curious is their labelling - CB, S and DB are all in effect pretty much the same position. What's the difference with DB to S/CB?
Anyway, you could say DB's are more criminally prone - 130 to 98 WR's (though, you could add TE to WR = 124).
Also kind of funny that there are more criminally inclined kickers than OG's!

Re: What is it with Wide Receivers ?
I agree, I expected Kickers and Punters to comfortably be the bottom two. The results are slightly skewed in that it reports each arrest, so players can - and do - appear multiple times.
Picking up on what GSC said about numbers of WRs on each roster, it would interesting to try and work out how many players per arrest.
Say for example there are 5 WRs per team per year, that would work out as 1600 WRs registered over the last 10yrs, so would work out as one every 16 WRs has been arrested in that time.
I think.

Thanks for the stats, useful.
Not forgetting that 32 franchises have 53 man rosters, plus practice rosters, plus when players are placed on IR those rosters get replaced, there's probably something like 2500 pro footballers in any year.
As Skins said, when the Rochdale goalkeeper gets nicked for GBH no-one cares (apart from the poor bloke with his teeth missing), compared to when serial cocks like Ashley Cole, John Terry, Wayne Rooney etc insist on being serial cocks

Re: What is it with Wide Receivers ?
Continuing the theme, (i think) i've worked it out that it would be 1 QB every 74 QBs has been arrested. (based on each team having 3 QBs)
So - we can conclude that over the last 10yrs, your 4.5 times more likely to be arrested if you're a WR than if you're a QB.

Re: What is it with Wide Receivers ?
Unless you had all the relevant stats it would be impossible to draw a reasonable conclusion. If as stated some are repeat offenders, you could statistically look at and compare the number of arrests per position, but you'd need actual offenders to make any real sense out of the numbers. i.e. if 1 kicker was arrested 8 times and 6 OG's arrested 1 time, who is worse?
And as for the last example it doesn't compute as how do you accommodate multi year players? The NFL hasn't seen a turnover of players at WR of 1600, and probably not even half that number. Also I'm presuming these figures only apply to players on an active roster at some stage?

Re: What is it with Wide Receivers ?
Completely agree Grizzly. (The numbers were very rough at best!)
I'm sure if "extra-marital issues" were included the footballers would massively outnumber the NFL guys.

Re: What is it with Wide Receivers ?
Skins - in terms of multi year players, i just worked it out using the "logic" that each year every player was new to the league.
Obviously repeat offenders do mean the stats aren't accurate. The website does show each seperate arrest, the player and the charges but i couldn't bring myself to go through it that thoroughly.

Grizzly, if he's mugged in Rochdale he probably already has no teeth!
And don't be so sure NFL players don't have 'relationship issues'. I bet they just don't get found out!
