Oldham loanee allegedly abused by Liverpool fans Empty Oldham loanee allegedly abused by Liverpool fans

Post by AberdeenSteve Sat 07 Jan 2012, 11:48 am

Liverpool and Merseyside Police are investigating an incident of alleged abuse from fans towards Oldham Athletic defender Tom Adeyemi.

The 20-year-old was visibly upset late in his side's 5-1 FA Cup third round defeat at Anfield on Friday.

The game was stopped briefly while Adeyemi alerted referee Neil Swarbrick to the incident.

However, Merseyside Police confirmed that no arrests were made for "racially aggravated behaviour".

A police spokesman said: "The force and Liverpool Football Club are investigating following an incident that occurred during the second half of the game.

"The aim of the investigation is to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident to ascertain if any action needs to be taken."

"From my point of view I have not spoken to Tom about it but I know the kid and something has been said," said Dickov.

"He is a placid boy, a kid who has been well educated with a fantastic temperament and has been with us since the end of August and I've never seen him raise his voice.

"For him to react like that it is obvious something has been said but what has been said I don't know because I've not had a chance to ask - I was too busy praising my players.

"He is fine now. He has calmed down. He is a laid-back kid who just gets on with business.

The scoreline does not reflect the distance between the two teams on that performance
Kenny Dalglish
Liverpool manager
"Our players went and calmed him down and the Liverpool players did as well, which was fantastic and is why they are top professionals."

The incident involving Adeyemi compounds a difficult few weeks for Liverpool, who were without Luis Suarez for the match against the Latics as the striker serves an eight-match ban for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra at Anfield in October.

Oldham gave their Premier League opponents a scare when Robbie Simpson fired in from 30 yards, but goals from Craig Bellamy, Steven Gerrard, from the penalty spot, Jonjo Shelvey, Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing sealed Liverpool's passage to the fourth round.

"The scoreline is a bit flattering really," said Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish, who made eight changes to the side that lost to Manchester City on Tuesday.

"Oldham did their club and their manager proud. They created one or two threatening situations for themselves, especially in the first half, so getting back as quickly as we did with the equaliser helped us.

"But the scoreline does not reflect the distance between the two teams on that performance."

The question that must be asked, was Suarez in the stands last night? Whistle

I'm a little fed up of all this now, I agree that racism needs to be kicked out of football but its too easy for people to accuse another of racism, and given recent events with Suarez they know it will be picked up on

I commented on the Suarez topic last night as one of my friend works as a steward at Anfield. The only player who has heard skin colour mentioned is the player himself, because he was playing for Oldham he was actually called a manc b@stard

Let me explain why;

1) Firstly Adeyemi is not some unintelligent idiot. He's actually very well educated and could have gone to Cambridge or Oxford. More significantly, we had him last season and if anything we used to complain that he was far too laid back as he had a very 'in and out' set of performances. Hence, given our struggles, used to get abuse (non racial) and never ever reacted. Don;t you think it's a little bit strange that he's now reacted if there's nothing in it - given his calm history? Or are Liverpool always innocent / misunderstood / wrongly accused etc?

2) Look no further than the idiotic reaction of your Manager to the Suarez situation. Now let me tell you, as a black man myself, I think his punishment is way OTT, Evra is just as guilty and we have to understand other cultures - I've never ever screamed 'racist' when I've been abused (and surprise, surprise rarely have!!). However, Kenny was wrong to so publicly back him and should have told his players to abandon those tea-shirts. All he's done now is given the dumb section of your fans the signal that anything goes. Hence last night

I'm a United fan, couldn't care less about Liverpool. I agree that they were wrong to come out and publically show support of Suarez given the accusation.

Just commenting on what I have been told by somebody who was there.

I can't stand racism full stop, and there is no place for it in society or in football. But I honestly believe that in the bigger picture this is something I can see getting out of hand in football, especially when inept old like Blatter have come out and said what happens on the pitch is in the heat of the moment, like its ok to do such things.

I didn't mean to cause any offence, and I apologise if I have

You haven't offended me!! And agree about the bigger picture

Suarez, should have been made to have some 'education' and maybe spend the next 4 Saturday's working for a race equality organisation in Manchester

Now thanks to both Liverpool and the FA, he seems himself as some kind of martyr and no lessons have been learned

However, you are correct. We do beat ourselves up about race relations. Believe me that this is the most tolerant country in the world

I think whether people heard it or not, the fact Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt were helping him calm down speaks volumes, whether they heard him or not that suggests they definitely believed him

Let's get the reports confirmed before we get carried away, but it doesn't look good.

I'm a bit alarmed that Liverpool supporters (generally, not in this thread) are so quick to shift the blame. They genuinely think they're being victimised, by the FA, by the media, by supporters of other clubs.

As i said, we can't be sure what's been said here, but you can't help but feel Dalglish and LFC could've prevented situations like this by admitting responsibility for Suarez' actions rather than acting like they were the real victims.

Cheers for the update KB

I think Liverpool will be secretly happy about this, they can come down on the lad as hard as possible and condemn every breath he's ever took and basically right a fee wrongs of their handling of the Suarez situation

It could go the other way though gaffer, I think that at least a certain portion of the media will label Liverpool hypocrites if they come down hard on the fan after the Suarez situation, despite the huge differences.

You're 100% correct. It's noticeable that Dalglish has been very quiet about this incident. Now of course he's no racist, so why would this be? Simple. How on earth can he say that the club won't tolerate racist language when he went so public about his support for Suarez

For me, the Suarez situation was the biggest blunder I've ever seen off a manager of Dalglish's standing. And I think he now realises this

I genuinely believe that Dalglish and co do believe Luis Suarez and have a genuine grievance with the FA's investigation. However, it is how the media is going to treat this incident which I think is an issue.

Hopefully Liverpool FC will come down hard on the fan, as they should do, but the media will then label them hypocrites rather than point out that they have done the right thing in that situation.

Reading the story on bbc page, Liverpool have now apologised to Adeyemi. However, you cant read their statement without thinking about whole Suarez thing.. "We have a very clearly stated public stance on discrimination and intolerance with dedicated staff that work hard daily on programmes in this important area." :S

I have a feeling that Liverpool will make an example of that fan, irrespective of any police action! Lifetime ban?

If they label them hypocrites it doesn't mean they havnt done the right thing it means they didn't handle the Suarez affair right

No matter what Suarezs intent, and as a Utd fan I firmly believe that he wasnt being racist but trying to wind Evra up by belittling him, he used a term that referred to Evras race and he found that offensive. If he came out at the start and said he used it hes sorry and he didnt mean offence as its a term Ive used my whole life then maybe hed have got a slap on the wrist but no Suarez and Liverpool dug their heels in.

Surely Liverpool will let him off. All the lad has to do it say in his culture what he said is acceptable. If the defence works for Suarez then they should apply the rule to others too.

In all fairness it is a cultural thing. Many fans at matches think because they are in a crowd that they can say or do whatever they like and no one does anything. How many of us have been at a match and heard some sort of abuse aimed towards other fans, players, managers or even the familys of opposing players?
