Tennis Injuries - How Much Damage Do They Cause?
Just reading some info on Kei Nishikori and the injury curtailed his career as he suffered a serious shoulder injury. He hit then a career high ranking of 56 in 2009 a year later he hit the lowly ranking of 898. Now he sits ranked 26 in the world. Juan Martin Del Potro this time last year was ranked 485 in the world. He missed most of 2010 through injury and recovery and is now sitting nicely at 11 in the world. David Nalbandian had a torrid time with injury for nearly 18 months. Hewitt another player plagued by injuries throughout his career. Maria Sharapova missed 10 months of tennis after a shoulder injury.
My question is tennis the most unforgiving sport in relation to injuries?

I thibnk football has its fair share of career threatening injuries and so too does athletics.
I don't think tennis has great debilitating injuries, they come back into their profession quite quickly, but tennis does pressurise the individual to get back quicker than is probably healthy than in other sports, so you may be right in the amount of long term damage they inflict upon themselves.

I'd say that tennis is probably in the top five but the likes of football and Rugby are higher.
This video taken from a tennis match has actually been used in teaching materials for ankle fractures to demonstrate mechanism of injury. With regards to football / rugby there is the additional risk of injuries such as tibial plateau fractures and tib/fib fractures arising from mis-timed tackles.

Boxing's long term prognosis is not very good. Some of the Xtreme sports are very unforgiving.

I'd say skiing - a brutal sport on the body if you're injured!
But tennis is brutal in a grinding kind of way, many injuries are longer-term inflammatory rather than sudden trauma based.

To quote the late, great John Candy
"Bones don't break in a bob sleigh, they shatter"
The winter sports have got to have the edge in severity!

It was some time ago but I don't remember it being at the FO, more like indoors and it looked like it was simply the leg snapping.
But I might be wrong on the location.

Sports involving machinery and high speed form a whole separate section, e.g. Formula One http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Formula_One_fatal_accidents

I think watching formula one can be even more dangerous. Remember that incident in Fangio's time when one of the car flew and burst into flame right into the crowd killing tens of people?
