Australian Open 2012 -Day 7 - Page 2 Empty Australian Open 2012 -Day 7

Post by bogbrush Sat 21 Jan 2012, 4:34 pm

First topic message reminder :

Federer v Tomic takes centre stage, the great Aussie hope against everyone's adopted son playing his 1000th match.

The all-Spanish tie of Lopez v Nadal; will Lopez put up a contest or is it another stroll for the impressive looking Nadal?

Berdy v El Mugro. Will Tomas go through and proved a meaningful quarter for Nadal or will perhaps the most pointless player in the upper reaches spring a surprise?

Kohlschreiber v JMDP. Potentially a very good match with two clean hitters. Maybe the hardest one to call with Del Potro looking to set a meeting with Fed at the Australian Open, after all the last one went so well...... Cool

I'm not doing the girls as I can no longer tell most of them apart.

I think the first real challenge for Roger Federer comes with the match against Del Potro. How will he handle the power of the big Argentinian ravenous for a taste of the big time again?

And this is classed as "hard court".

Maybe we need another class. Perhaps "soft court".

Yes though I think he is purposely adding some safety in it cause he did not know how the match would pan out. Expect to see some flatter one now.

Yes exactly Tenez, I was going to add that on. He also knows that he doesn't have to go for the margins as much against Tomic since Tomic doesn't have the retrieval skills of some of the other top players.

Good stuff fromTomic. Some good flat hitting, an awful lot look like they're going into the tape.

Unintentional reveal on Sky. They laughed about Tomic practising on clay before Wimbledon.

Perhaps the Tomics know better!

Tomic is completely knackered. As a result of his 5 setters but also the pace of game in those first 2 sets.

Ah, ok.

I think once he retires we'll learn that the back was a big problem over an extended period, the myth of no-injury Fderer is more a policy decision by him I believe.

I think the back troubles him even on this match. He is not serving as well as he can.

Straightforward for the Swiss Maestro. Didn't think he served as well as Greg is letting on. I think Federer can at least up his game by another 10%.

Yes, he's strolled through so far. I think a Djokovic/Nadal final looks likely. Still, the tournament only starts now.

I think in Berdych, Nadal will surely be tested. If Berdych can attack the short stuff from Nadal, I think Berdych can take him out.

It's going to be interesting to see how long Nadal will manage to play in the middle of the day when the balls bounce highest.

Berdych Nadal should be a night match....but I doubt they want to favour Berdych.

Q. How much are you training? We've seen pictures of you running on treadmills after you've played threesetters and things like that.

BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah, I think it's important. Even after Kooyong and stuff, the matches when I won I went to the treadmill for about 20 minutes. It's all about getting fit. It's being able to push yourself when it's impossible to win.

And, you know, had I not done that fitness the last two, three months, you know, there's no way mentally you can be out there in that heat and turn around in a match like that and win.

I think it was all fitness, the way I've been preparing the last few months. It's all paid off.

Here from Tomic after his Verdy's match.

Credit where credit is due to Federer he did what he had to do in a tricky environment and wasn't overly taxed in terms of energy spent in the end. Remember that Tomic has room for a heck of a lot of improvement in all departments so to expect anything less than a straight sets win for Fed would have been wishful thinking on the behalf of Australians and Tomic fans. He is 19 and has already reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and the Fourth Round at the Australian Open. That stat is pretty impressive for one so young.

Tomic is just like Murray at the same stage of career, though I credit him with a better attacking forehand. That flat one had Federer rushed and was reminiscent of Del Potro to some extent.

Was a poor 4th rounder, Dolgopolov must be piissed that this cheater was so feeble after the not so bad first set. I expect Tomic will go back to learning how to chase balls down as he has the quickness of an elephant.
