Glaws v Blues Empty Glaws v Blues

Post by HongKongCherry Fri 27 Jan 2012, 12:18 pm

Teams are up for tomorrow’s game that not many people care about! Glaws managed to get some form of revenge on Blues for the thumping they gave us a few years ago, but another win would help! Lots of changes all round. Glaws have a young front row, but a gnarled boiler room and back row. Similarly a very young half back combo, but a very experienced backline in general. It’s nice to see Ollie Phillips making his debut too.

I think home advantage will just sneak it.

GLAWS:
Tom Voyce; Ollie Phillips, Tim Molenaar, Eliota Fuimaono-Sapolu, James Simpson-Daniel; Ryan Mills, Dave Lewis; Dan Murphy, Matias Cortese, Shaun Knight; Will James, Alex Brown; Peter Buxton (capt), Andy Hazell, Brett Deacon

Replacements:
Darren Dawidiuk; Yann Thomas, Dario Chistolini, Matt Cox, Gareth Evans, Nick Runciman, Mike Tindall, Henry Trinder

BLUES:
Ben Blair; Richard Mustoe, Tom James, Cory Allen, Chris Czekaj; Gareth Davies, Lewis Jones; John Yapp, Marc Breeze, Sam Hobbs; Cory Hill, Macauley Cook (capt); Josh Navidi, Thomas Young, Luke Hamilton

Replacements:
Rhys Williams, Nathan Trevett, Ryan Harford, Matthew Screech, Ruben Tucker, Tom Rowlands, Rhys Patchell, Dan Fish

Cardiff Blues travel to Kingsholm this Saturday to face Gloucester for the LV= Cup Round 3 match, kick off 3.00pm

The team is almost completely different to the side that secured a Heineken Cup Quarter Final in defeating Racing Metro last weekend, as the opportunity to once again give youth its chance is taken by the Blues coaching team, albeit with a blend of experience most notably, the return of full back Ben Blair following a 15 month lay off.

Speaking of the match Cardiff Blues back coach Gareth Baber said,

"The team we've selected to face Gloucester is a mixture of youth and experience."

"It's been a pretty full on season so far, so we've looked for some players to have a bit of time off and bit of a rest after our Heineken campaign."

"Equally we have other players who need a bit of game time to keep the level of competition as high as possible within the squad."

"I think it's important for those players to get a chance to express themselves. Some of the younger ones who have been playing in the Premiership will come in and force their name forward."

"It also gives the opportunity for other players in the squad who have picked up injuries over the last couple of months. It's important for them to get back up to the level where we need them to be for these two LV= Cup games and pushing forward to the RaboDirect."

"Tom James has played 13 previously for Cardiff RFC so it's another angle in terms of different tactic as you play the game."

"Tom is a winger and that's where he sees himself, but in terms of a squad if you've got someone who can play wing and 13, it opens up avenues for you in terms of selection."

Speaking of the return of Blair, Baber added:

"Ben Blair brings a vast amount of experience having been a solid front line player for us for the past five to six seasons."

"Obviously he's been out for a long time with his knee injury but we hope to see him back to his kicking best and controlling the back three for us, solid under high balls and driving our attack in wide areas."

Blair has good memories of playing Gloucester having recorded 50 points against the West Country opponents in 3 previous games, including a win and 25 points in the EDF Energy Cup Final in 2009, a result which Gloucester avenged in the tournament the following season.

The only players that were involved in Heineken Cup action last weekend, include John Yapp who is in line to make his 153rd appearance for the Blues, Flanker Josh Navidi and Chris Czekaj who retains his starting spot in a team that is captained by Second Row Macauley Cook.

Blues Team: 15. Ben Blair 14. Richard Mustoe 13. Tom James 12. Cory Allen 11. Chris Czekaj 10. Gareth Davies 9. Lewis Jones

8. Luke Hamilton 7. Thomas Young 6. Josh Navidi 5. Macauley Cook (capt) 4. Cory Hill 3. Sam Hobbs 2. Marc Breeze 1. John Yapp

Replacements:
16. Rhys Williams 17. Nathan Trevett 18. Ryan Harford 19. Matthew Screech 20. Ruben Tucker 21. Tom Rowlands 22. Rhys Patchell 23. Dan Fish

Following the match this weekend against last year's LV= Cup champions, the group stage of the competition is completed for the Blues next weekend at home to Harlequins on Sunday 5th February, kick off 1pm.

Bloody hell that is a weak Blues team. Can't see anything but a Gloucester win here, might even be a 30+

It's the LV= and Cardiff will get smashed again. Not proper Cardiff though so it doesn't matter.

Curious that having lost his Saxons place by being called up to senior side as cover for Tuilagi, Trinder was sent back to Gloucester as bench cover and then started ahead of Phillips on the wing (injury or England request?).

I'd imagine they were throwing James in at centre in the hope he's a revelation and could replace Lualau... I'm sure that failed though.

Well at least Cardiff B's have shown consistency in this competition;
Lost 33-3 to Newcastle
Lost 30-3 to Llanelli S's
Lost 40-3 to Gloucester

Quins up next. A try would be nice.

Not much to say about that game really. Cardiff played for the first 10 minutes of each half then were just very poor. Glaws destroyed them in the scrum and won several against the head. The only real thing of note was the ref's complete failure to get a grip. Cardiff should have had 2 or 3 yellows for persistent fouls.

Irish nearly did us a favour but we know need Sale to beat Scarlets and we need a 5pt win against Irish...

a silly blues team. i'm all for giving the young bucks a run, but to send them all out together, away from home against a tough eng prem team... coaching madness.

of cource the lv/anglo welsh cup is a side show, an unimportant side show.

i met brent cockbain some years ago and we talked about the lv cup. he said, 'its a pointless tournament. no one cares about it.'

I'm guessing Mills must have had a pretty good game?
