Davis Cup Trivia Question
The Davis Cup started in 1900. In 1901, the finalists were the UK and USA but the final was never played. Why was that? It also wasn´t held in 1910 and the years of WW1 and WW2 but what was the reason in 1901?

Re: Davis Cup Trivia Question
The 1901 Davis Cup was won by the United States on walk-over as British Isles did not exercise the right of challenge during the year.

Couldn't we just keep exercising that right until we've actually got a half decent team again?

Re: Davis Cup Trivia Question
Well not strictly true there laverfan. There were only two teams involved at that stage (like the America´s Cup in sailing) and neither side won in 1901 because the British Isles decided not to challenge for the final. So there wasn't actually any winning by default.
But nevertheless a free tennis pack is winging its way to you as we speak.

Only two teams involved doesn't really make it a final then. Still a walkover by anybody's definition. Would love to know what reason was given.
Probably a better one than Andy's niggling injuries are playing up I imagine though.

Laverfan it's probably two free tickets to the next Davis Cup encounter in Glasgow.
You could always stick them on ebay - some people will apparently buy anything there!

If I was getting tickets to Glasgow, I would be open to travel.

Re: Davis Cup Trivia Question
The final thing was a smokescreen to weed out the novices newballs.
Closer to your tennis idol than Hawaii laverfan. I´m from NZ but living in Madrid. But be strong New Zealand does have Polynesian connections to Hawaii.
Truth was I didn't know the answer when I posted this. My wife asked me to find out as there´s a comp at her work (her company sponsors tennis in Spain) for two with flight and hotel included. Unfortunately that´s not the free tennis pack winging your way to you. A plastic bag I bought when buying some tennis balls is closer to the idea of free tennis pack. If we do win though, I´ll see what we can do about adding some balls to that free pack.

My other option was Maori instead of Hawaiian roots. Happy to see I was close. Doubly glad to see you are closer to Rockhampton.

All such incentives welcome. If you need any assistance in your comp to answer further questions, I have my trusted Bud Collins handy and would be glad to provide any help, we, at 606v2 can.

Re: Davis Cup Trivia Question
Kukushkin, Golubev, et al. beat Czech Republic (Berdych, Stepanek, Hernych) recently, is it last year?
I would hazard a guess in 1991-92 is when they joined after the USSR dissolution. Not sure which exact year.
Some of the Russian players moved from Kazakhstan to Russia, IIRC. Davydenko? Tursunov?
Is it Fred Perry for Team GB?

Re: Davis Cup Trivia Question
JM... I am itching to go look on daviscup.com, but I will wait till our 'Strong' one from the 'Land of Long White Cloud' (Kia Kaha Aotearoa) tells us what the correct answers are.

Re: Davis Cup Trivia Question
Regarding the guy with the most GB Davis Cup appearances it seems he shares (unofficially) the fastest serve at 154 m.p.h with a certain Andy Roddick.

Re: Davis Cup Trivia Question
Without clicking on the link, I think either Perry or Renshaw, then is incorrect.
Austin or Wilson are more likely candidates. I would say Austin.

Re: Davis Cup Trivia Question
carrieg4 some confusion it seems
According to wikipaedia "Sangster holds the record for the most matches played for Great Britain in the Davis Cup. He played 65 matches from 1960 to 1968, winning 43 of them."
According to the Davis Cup website the holder of the most ties played is Bobby Wilson with 34 - this is referring to singles only
Sangster's record is for both singles and doubles - Wilson's total is 61.

Sangster it is, I misread the question slightly and was looking at the number of ties. Didn't know he had such a great serve.

Re: Davis Cup Trivia Question
OK here's another trivia question for you.
Everyone knows Isner vs. Mahut is the longest ever professional tennis match
but who played the longest ever Davis Cup singles match at around 30 mins. longer than the recent AO final?

Re: Davis Cup Trivia Question
I don´t know the most matches question for GB. That was somebody else who asked that. The USSR played until 1992 and K started in 1995.

Yes, JM you are correct. Brain cramp on my part confusing Edberg with Wilander.
The Santoro-Clement is R1 FO - 6 hours and 33 minutes over two days, IIRC.
Interestingly, Wilander lost to Horst Skoff of Austria (DC 1989) in a 5-set 6 hours 1 minute match.
Becker-McEnroe 1987 DC is another long match.
