Hand Wrapping
The picture posted of Donaires bloody hand raised a question in my head about his hand wraps.
Since when could you ridge your wraps like that, i'd always thought it was against the commission rules?

Re: Hand Wrapping
Is the rule not that you are allowed to ridge them at the knuckles? I can't really tell if they are ridged at the knuckles.

Re: Hand Wrapping
thats interesting, they do look strange however i'm no expert.
the fact he is posing for such a picture, and the fact it was a big fight leads me to think it wouldnt happen it it wasnt legal.

Re: Hand Wrapping
You're not really meant to be able to ridge them at all but it does seem to be something that's becoming more common, can't say i've ever seen an American fighter do it.

Re: Hand Wrapping
He did it to Wladimir hands before the Haye fight it stops any movement in the wraps. I think most trainers do it.

It's not done to stop movement but rather harden the wrap itself.

Re: Hand Wrapping
It's done to level out the knuckles so when the punch lands the pressure is taken across the whole hand not just the more prominent knuckles of the first and index finger. I think

I asked Freddie Roach about it on twitter and he said it is done to stop any movement in the wraps which could leave the knuckles less protected.

Not what he was saying a couple of years ago on the matter, he was the one who made very vocal complaints about it to start with.

Re: Hand Wrapping
He said a small bit to hold the wraps together and stop any movement of the wraps around the knuckle area. He says no matter how well hands are wrapped you can still get movement in the wraps due to what you are doing with your hands.
It looks like Garcia has ridged them separating the knuckles which isn't allowed.

Re: Hand Wrapping
That's what I meant PBK, ridging between each knuckle isn't supposed to happen but Roach does exactly the same with Pacquiao and Khan.
