while those athletes may be the respected best in their sport the difference between for instance winning multiple majors and track/sprinting or a group sport is enormous,i know which direction I'm inclined to consider which is hands down more brutal and harder to achieve but how do they actually compare the sports and justify the outcome of their choice? just curious

Congrats to Djokovic for winning another award, it seems that rafa hardly wins anything these days. Earlier he only use to lose when injures but these days even that excuse is no more valid.

Messi, Bolt and Vettel? Maybe the latter but Bolt's year was 2008 and Messi is good every year but not a stellar year in 2011. Definately Djokovic for me.

Tennis is a popular sport if it can overtake players like Bolt and Messi.
I know Federer won that title a few times I believe.
Djoko certainly dominated his sport more than the others in 2011.

From The Times (PPV) This is what Djokovic had to say about his AO final match with Nadal.
it is the most exciting match I ever played. Both of us made history and unfortunately there only had to be one winner. We both said we enjoyed the pain, the physical suffering we had that night because it was a great cause: the finals of a grand slam, No 1 versus No 2.
“We were both looking for the best possible start of the year and, to be honest, he would have been a worthy winner and would have deserved to take the trophy that night. I was very fortunate to be in that position in the end. We both can be proud of our performances.”

He seemed to win the AO semi final quite easily.stratocumulus wrote: it seems that rafa hardly wins anything these days.

If that's any consolation for you, fine against a 30 year old weak era beneficiary.

Congratulations to Novak, I think that the AO open final maybe tilted some of the late votes his way. Maybe the decision had been made at that time I don't know. It seems that tennis players win more of these Laureus awards than anyone else. Does anyone have a stat for percentage of awards won by tennis players?
Very nice sportsman like quote hawkeye isn't it great when both guys show each other respect!

Yes I thought it was an impressive quote. Djokovic is a great champion. He may still have a lot to learn... but he shows that he is learning.

Well hawkeye he is more mature than 99 percent of the 24 year olds I know. But he has to carry a lot on shoulders. His entourage, the hopes and aspiration of a nation, and an entire sport as the world #1. So whether he likes it or not he is a role model. I think he has made a few mistakes along the way but in general the guy has been a pretty good advert for the game.

He carries the entourage? I thought they were there to lighten the load. Does he keep them for charitable purposes?

Nole has not made a single mistake on the way. His career has been a continuous progression of small improvements.

Good point BB, but say frankly if you like Djokovic as a tennis player or not?
