Australian Grand Prix 25-27 March
The F1 season kicks off this weekend at Albert Park, Melbourne race time 7.00am GMT. (after taking into account the clocks changing)
The testing is done and its time for the teams to hit the tracks.
Will this race give an early idea on how things will pan out over the season?
How do you see this one going?
I will be putting the chat box on from about 6.45am on Sunday for the race.
Hope to see you there

You lucky thing. Still got work tomorrow, so no live practice for me to watch. The BBC better have an online player showing the highlights........

McLaren pulled it out of the bag this morning.
They set the fastest time in practice for the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.
Jenson Button set the pace in an updated McLaren with a lap of one minute 25.852 seconds to edge his team-mate Lewis Hamilton by 0.132secs.
Ferrari's Fernando Alonso was 0.147secs behind in third ahead of Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber.

It certainly suprised me. I was expecting Alonso to pip it this morning.
Wonder how qualifying will unfold.

McLaren look like they could spring a surprise. But the times seem to be running in parralel so maybe Red Bull will be out front with a hefty margin come the end of Qualifying tomorrow

Thats the word on the street so to speak.
Dont count out the Red Bulls just yet, but all in all, its making for an intriguing qualifying and race.

Re: Australian Grand Prix 25-27 March
Two fascinating sessions and a collective sigh of relief at McLaren who appear to be in the the right ball-park.
One other potential ace McLaren may have up their sleeve is that the technical nature of the circuit very much plays to Button's strengths. Now add this to the fact that tyre degradation has been less than expected, which may also go some way to offset some of the earlier difficulties and McLaren may not be in bad shape for this race.
Other main protagonists (for both Pole and the race win) must be Vettel, Webber and Alonso, with Hamilton of course, who can never be counted out even though he appears to be wringing the neck of his car to match Button. Massa has not yet turned up…
I don't see any of the other teams getting a serious look in, and HRT may not even start the race despite working through two consecutive nights!

Re: Australian Grand Prix 25-27 March
Random notes after Practice 3 (caveat: Memory recall is not as easy as it used to be!)
Virgin: engine change due to bolt dropping into engine: now kaput and no
dispensation regardless of whether Cosworth were at fault.
Maldonado error: probably caused by brake bias too much to rears.
Renault turning vane attached to brake duct failure could be more trouble for rest of weekend.
Alonso looking untidy early on.
Good lap from Button on Options but Webber achieves similar time on Primes!
Williams session is looking poor.
Perez coasts into pits. Unknown problem as I write.
Great lap from Vettel to go P1. I believe was on Primes.
Schumacher appears to be struggling with workload and frustrated at Toro Rosso
driver. - Silly. Should know better than to get angry by now.
Alonso still looking rather untidy.
Massa messy: has simply not turned up yet; is he feeling the pressure?
Vettel's front wing suffers light damage to outer edge. Probably end-plate. Is the Red Bull a bit fragile?
Karthikeyan manages to get around the whole track but is dangerously slow. Surely
cannot be given dispensation for qualifying where I cannot see them even
close to 107%.
Rosberg unsure of best place for KERS deployment.
Petrov doing well.
Hamilton decent lap on Options; currently 0.2 off pace but I expect Red Bull to easily better this if they feel like it.
Vettel monstrous time! Surely that will not be beaten this session. Favourite for Pole with Webber P2.
Petrov slight off shows he's pushing hard. Back it off mentally Vitaly; come down 5% please.
Conclusions:
Red Bull will continue to dominate.
McLaren showing strength in recovery.
Ferrari looks like two different teams.
Mercedes looking strong, particularly in Rosberg. Schumacher not quite there yet.
Williams and HRT must be extremely frustrated.
Good luck to them all.

Re: Australian Grand Prix 25-27 March
To those that called it, well done.
If you are not watching qualifying until the re-run later this afternoon, do not read this thread until after you have seen it!
Vettel takes pole with Hamilton second after a late charge. Vettel ahead by 0.778 seconds!
Webber & Button are 3rd & 4th with Alonso in 5th.

0.8 seconds is quite a margin isn't it. And if I remember correctly from playing the game the Australian gp is quite a short track as well...

Re: Australian Grand Prix 25-27 March
Vettel appears to have the capacity to win this race by at least 20 seconds.
So, failing some disaster for him (or a miraculous recovery by Webber), it's likely going to be a case of 'Who will be 2nd?'

How agressive do you think Hamilton will be on the first corner?
With those two scrapping it could give Button the chance to jump Webber.

I think Lewis will go for it and Vettel's unlikely to give an inch so if Webber, Button or Alonso are on their toes it could give them a chance to get by whilst the other two are tussling.

Re: Australian Grand Prix 25-27 March
Hamilton needs to get Vettel immediately. If he's alongside by turn 1, he could be properly leading by the end of turn 3. This needs a very good start, which has not always been a strength of his, so he needs to get off the line very cleanly. If he does, expect him to try to out-brake Vettel immediately. Even so, I don't think Hamilton will win the race unless Vettel gets rattled (which is possible).
Vettel is superb when in front but he doesn't fight too well when he's behind.
Of course there are three others to consider: Webber could win but only if Vettel has some mishap. Button could win if he does a significantly better job with his tyres. And although Alonso has looked a little ragged at times over the weekend so far, I think it's too early to discount him from getting on the podium.
Red Bull are awesome through the corners. But if a McLaren is within a second of a Red Bull, it could claw back some time on the 867meters of DRS window first time around (across the start/finish line). If Vettel survives this first lap, including Hamilton's likely DRS attack, he'll vanish into the distance to a comfortable win - so long as his stops go to plan as expected.
Exactly the same applies to Button and Webber. Meanwhile, Alonso will be waiting to pick off any pieces and may try something on Button at turn 1 if he gets a better start.
I don't expect Rosberg to set the world alight, but the Mercedes is a very good car. He'll likely play a waiting game.

we're now down to a 22 car race due to hispania not being inside the 107% rule.

Re: Australian Grand Prix 25-27 March
Hopefully we will have a safe race where all the teams have an opportunity to be testing their new cars out for reliability, tyre wear, KIRS, overtaking, grip etc over proper racing conditions. It's looking like another battle between the Red Bulls, McClarens and Ferraris.

Good to see the young guns on he front row, 2 racers ready to race. With the strategists and schemers behind them
Let's hope it's all clean off the line and into the corner
