Qi and General Ignorance!
First topic message reminder :
I am a mahoosive fan of this show and pretty much everybody on it with a dream lineup of Fry, Alan, Sean lock, Bill Bailey and Ross Noble.
I can remember so many of the facts off this great show and have always wanted to be the quizmaster ala the great stephen fry.
So this is what I am going to do, a QI quiz like thing where you will be deducted points for obvious or uninteresting answers and rewarded for the right ones and also for interesting ones.
Is anyone interested in doing this, I think it would be quite fun but obvs i would say that as it's my idea!
Any takers???

Re: Qi and General Ignorance!
1) What man made artifacts can be seen from the moon?
2) Where does Chicken Tikka Masala come from?
3) Where was Champagne invented?
4) How many senses do we have?
5) What would you use to outfox a crocodile?
(a) Paper clip (b) plastic bag (c) Handbag (d) rubber band (e) crocodile clip
- Spoiler:
- totally read that wrong at first standard answer has to be the great wall of china. However technically if you knew where to look could you see Mt Rushmore? if you knew where the mountain was in America to look for it, it is a man made artifact by having the carvings on it.
I origionally thought it said what artifacts can be seen ON the moon. And said it depends where you are, say you are on a space station nearer towards it I would hazard a guess alot more than if you are on earth? If we are saying from earth would it depend on what part of the moon you could see due to its rotation? You will want people to say Apollo 11....?? lol, however I'm going to say craters in the moons surface.
2) Where does Chicken Tikka Masala come from?
- Spoiler:
- Pakistan? I reckon the buzz answer is India so it won't be my answer. Either that or it was first eaten during the british empire and therefore travelled to places such as India.
3) Where was Champagne invented?
- Spoiler:
- North east France, Reims. Also known as the champagne region?
4) How many senses do we have?
- Spoiler:
- alot more than the touch, taste, sight, hearing and smell. There is kinaethesis for one, the sense of knowing what your body is doing while moving. Depth perception being another?
5) What would you use to outfox a crocodile?
(a) Paper clip (b) plastic bag (c) Handbag (d) rubber band (e) crocodile clip
- Spoiler:
- My answer is plastic bag depending on how strong the bag is, if its one the croc can't break then putting it over its mouth means it cannot extend its jaw the whole way. Otherwise handbag depending on the material used, if its an animal leather bag then it may somehow make the croc aware to the bag in someway allowing you to trick the croc

1) What man made artefacts can be seen from the moon?
2) Chicken Tikka Masala
3) Champagne
4) Senses
5) Crocodile
- Spoiler:
- Surely millions given that artificial lights can be seen from space. I presume that things such as the great wall of china cannot be seen as they do not illuminate neither do they reflect light. From this America, Europe, Japan and parts of Australia would be visible whereas large portions of Africa would not.
2) Chicken Tikka Masala
- Spoiler:
- Its definitely not India! The Tikka part is Indian as it is the way in which the chicken is marinated. The addition of the masala sauce is a British invention as it is rare in india to have a sloppy not very hot sauce with tikka style meat
3) Champagne
- Spoiler:
- Well. The grapes that are used to make it, traditionally come from France. However champagne as a drink was made popular in Britain. This was due to a difference in the way bottles are made on either side of The English Channel (quick dig at the French its our channel!). In France Wine made with grapes that would later become champagne grapes were bottled as usual. However the CO2 that is produced caused the bottles to explode. Furthermore the French disliked fizzy wine and spent years and lots and lots of Francs on trying to prevent it going fizzy. Les Anglais developed a liking for this fizzy drink, or should that be the Dandy's at the time. And after bottling it in thicker English style bottles the drink was storable and the bottles no longer exploded. The French took this as an insult but took the bottles and Champagne started. At the end of WW1 the French were so determined to protect "their" invention that they had a clause put into the Treaty of Versailles which meant that any champagne made outside of France could not be called champagne. And then later in the 20th century all of the French vines started to die from a parasitical infection. This was introduced by trading vines with Les Americans. And if the French hate anyone more than Les Anglais its Les Americans. The solution? All "French" vines are American vines now as almost all of the French vines died out!
4) Senses
- Spoiler:
- Many senses. More than the traditional 5. Something like 40 something. For example common sense or how you know what to expect.
5) Crocodile
- Spoiler:
- I'll go with c. Providing its a crocodile skin handbag or snake skin. The crocodile gets confused and either tries to mate with (if crocodile skin) or eat (snake skin) handbag allowing you to get away!
Re: Qi and General Ignorance!
Can anyone join this? It looks great! And I've read the book so I should do pretty well.

1) What man made artifacts can be seen from the moon?
- Spoiler:
- No man made artefacts can be seen from the moon. Loads can be seen from the start of space, but none from moon. The buzzer answer is the Great Wall of China but there is no place in space where only that is visible!
2) Where does Chicken Tikka Masala come from?
- Spoiler:
- Scotland, I think!
3) Where was Champagne invented?
- Spoiler:
- Buzzer answer is France, but I can't remember where it was actually invented. Think it was somewhere in England!
4) How many senses do we have?
- Spoiler:
- Can't remember this one at all! I'm not going to fall into the trap so... I think we have 17 senses. No idea!
5) What would you use to outfox a crocodile?
(a) Paper clip (b) plastic bag (c) Handbag (d) rubber band (e) crocodile clip
- Spoiler:
- Rubber band! A crocodile has huge power shutting it's mouth but it's muscles to open it's jaw are incredibly weak so putting a rubber band around it's jaws would mean it would mean that it couldn't open it's mouth to attack!

Think I did well
- Spoiler:
- None, not even the great wall of china
2) Where does Chicken Tikka Masala come from?
- Spoiler:
- Glasgow
3) Where was Champagne invented?
- Spoiler:
- France - that most likely is a trap
4) How many senses do we have?
- Spoiler:
- 5, if you don't consider things like fear, anticipation, if you conside them many more
5) What would you use to outfox a crocodile?
- Spoiler:
- Rubber Band, I'll put it around my wrist and pretend it's one of those nonsense balance braclets (pretty much a plain rubber band) used by sports players and hope placebo affect takes place and my increased balance allows me to get away from the crocodile
Think I did well

All guesses there! See how that goes...
- Spoiler:
- None. Only lights and similar can be seen from the moon. However, some artifacts can be seen from space.
2) Where does Chicken Tikka Masala come from?
- Spoiler:
- Bolton. When immigration was rife in the 60's and 70's, and Indian curries gained their superb reputation, some disgruntled Boltoners decided to try and pass their curries off as Indian in order to up their sales. Unfortunately, tikka masala tastes awful, so its fair to say they failed. Badly.
3) Where was Champagne invented?
- Spoiler:
- I'm gonna take a guess at Italy. Can't say I have much of an idea, but I can imagine some Italian dude coming up with a good recipe before some sneaky French bar steward nicked it and tried to pass it off as his own.
4) How many senses do we have?
- Spoiler:
- A lot. The traditional 5, as well as sense of direction (unless you're a woman), dress sense (unless you're a chav), sense of humour (unless you're a woman or a guardian reader) etc etc. You get the picture.
5) What would you use to outfox a crocodile?
- Spoiler:
- How about a rubber band? Put it over his jaws and it might stop him opening his mouth?
All guesses there! See how that goes...

- Lots!!
5) What would you use to outfox a crocodile?
(a) Paper clip (b) plastic bag (c) Handbag (d) rubber band (e) crocodile clip

GOOOOOODDDDDDD eveninggg good evening good evening anndddd gooddd evening to youuu my fine young specimens who are clearly straining to contain their excitement ahead of this week's QI where we make those obvious claims and thoughts feel oh so foolish! And onto the answerss
1) What man made artifacts can be seen from the moon?
Many things can be seen from space (100km away from the earths surface) such as cities, ships, mountains and even some buildings.
4000 miles past the earth's orbit nothing man-made is visible and especially not from the moon 400,000km away.
Ignore trivial pursuit's claim that you can see it in between the two!
2) Where does CTM come from?
Glasgow! Britain exports it to India and is now the most popular dish in GB and it started back in the 1960's. Chicken Tikka is a Bangladeshi dish, chicken tandoori was first tested in an english restaurant in 1966 and the scots later acquired the recipe and the story goes 'a customer asked for some sauce for it and the chef improvised with tomato soup spices and cream!
3) Where was champagne invented?
Not the french! It may enrage them to discover it was an....... English one ttaaa daaaa! The English developed a taste for fizzy wine in the 16th century, importing barrels of green, flat wine from champagne and added sugar and molasses to start it fermenting as well as introducing the glass and corks.
4) How many senses do we have?
At least 9 and at the most 21. Beyond the regular 5 they're are the widely accepted proprioception (body awareness), thermoception (sense of heat),
Nociception (sense of pain) and equilibrioception (sense of balance).
Other's that are possibilites are hunger, thirst, sense of depth, meaning or language or danger to name just a few.
5) What would you use to outfox a croc?
D) Rubber Band!
for crocs up to 2m this should do the trick. The muscles in their jaws are so powerful it has the same downward force of a truck falling off a cliff!
However the muscles opening their jaw are rather weak, weak enough for you to hold it shut with one hand.
Oh my is it that time already? Well onto the scores!
Goodness me there are some fantastic answers this week once again and here we go....!!

Re: Qi and General Ignorance!
Also if you sit on top a crocodile just behind it head near it's front legs and stroke the base of it's head and neck area it sends them into a kind of torpor or calm state where they forget about aggression.
It's very soothing for them and provides relief from parasites which tend to gather in that area. Similar to someone scratching your back/spine in a hard to reach place...or doing the same to your pet dog or cat. They're putty in your hands then and it makes it easy to disembark. The hard bit is getting on quickly (45 degree angle back from the side) and starting to perform the 'massage' before they get a chance to react in a bad way.
