No player won his first French Open when he was the #1 seed in the Open era
Apparently in the open era no player won his first French Open when he was the #1 seed .
This is a weird stat that I read today.
Anyone else think this is peculiar or what?
When they won their first FO:
Kodes was the #7 seed
Borg was the #3 seed
Lendl was the #2 seed
Courier was the #9 seed
Kuerten was not even seeded
Nadal was the #4 seed
The players mentioned above all won at least one FO as the #1 seed but it was never their first FO.
Could this be a bad omen for Nole?

I don't think so deeznu, Novak is the most accomplished clay court player on tour after nadal. He has 3 masters victories on clay and 6 total tournament wins on the clay courts. Although he has never been to the final of RG he has 3 straight semis. This seems more like a statistical anomaly to me.

How many of those guys already had a slam under their belt? None I'd hazard a guess. I think what the stat really shows is that the French Open is more often the springboard to a great career than something picked up for the first time in the course of one, which is consistent with clay being, by and large, more of a young man's surface than the others.

Ha ha! I suppose Nadal shouldn't try and overtale Djokovic in the rankings before RG then...

Unfair - Federer wisely waited until Nadal was No. 1 before grabbing the crown - his first opportunity in 6 years of trying to win the thing.

It is interesting how often the FO has been the first slam won by a player though. Apart from Federer and Agassi, can't remember many other recent-ish FO winners who already had a slam under their belt. The difference is nowadays all surfaces play the same, so the top players in the world are also the best on all surfaces, which didn't used to be the case at all, with specialist clay-courters winning RG.

What was Federer and Agassi ranking when they won FO?

Federer was seeded 2nd (2009) and Agassi seeded 13th (1999). Federer was 2nd in the world and Agassi was 14 or 13th in the world.

Fed was number 2, behind Nadal... He got back to number 1 after winning Wimbledon...
Agassi was number 13 and on his way up from ranking of around 140 at the beginning of the year...
