Isner brushes past Federer; puts USA on the brink
Isner bt Federer 4-6 6-3 7-6 6-2
John Isner played one of the best matches of his life today to overcome Roger Federer from a set down on a slow indoor clay surface. Federer looked in control when he took the first set but Isner fought back with a lot of heart and sealed the win in 2 hours 40 min. This was a magnificent effort by John Isner, especially considering how slow the surface was. He hammered down 14 aces and won 78% of his first serve points.
This results now leaves USA on the verge of qualification after Wawrinka succumbed to Fish earlier today in a 5 set thriller. Wawrinka gave his all, and saved numerous match points, but still could not find a way past Mardy Fish. It will take a huge effort for the Swiss team to recover this deficit, Federer and Wawrinka have to beat Fish and Isner repsectively, while tomorrow Fed/Wawrinka (the Olympic Gold medallsts) will have to beat Bryan/Harrison in the cruch doubles fixture.

Well done Isner.. He beat Federer in his backyard, on clay.
Especially since, according to some, Federer is playing better than ever

Exactly Emanci, saying Federer is playing his best is utter laughable.

Good for Isner.
Now watch him play like crap in Madrid/Rome/Monte Carlo as he always does.
Roger is a mess obviously!

At face value this seems to be a surprising result. Presumably the Swiss Tennis Federation (with input from the players including Federer?) would have chosen the indoor clay venue as that which would favour them the most against the hard court orientated USA team. They could have chosen the hard indoor courts at Basel.

Don't worry if he wins IW (possibility if the other other three get injured again) Overend will be back stating it again
