Fantasy European League™ - Round 1 Empty Re: Fantasy European League™ - Round 1

Post by Cor Blimey Guvnor Wed 22 Feb 2012, 12:46 pm

Barcelona 3 - 1 Juventus
Messi ----------- Cavani
Sanchez
Xavi

Juve played an attacking formation at the Camp Nou with just one holding midfield player, the remaining 5 all attack minded. Barca's renowned midfield dominated Marchisio and with it the match. Juve always had a threat on the break especially with the quality of Cavani in the side but they did not see enough of the ball to benefit. Barca ran out good winners in the end.

Real Madrid 2 - 0 Chelsea
Higuain
Aguero

Chelsea were hit particularly hard with injuries in central midfield and this played the key part in the outcome as Real's midfield ultimately dominated the match and created the better opportunities for their front men. Goalless at half time, a goal each for Argentinian pair Higuain and Aguero keep the point at home as Chelsea's talented attack struggled to see enough of the ball. Rooney worked hard but had to get progressively deeper to gain possession, where he was less effective.

Arsenal 1 - 1 Liverpool
Goetze ------ Lavezzi

Arsenal have a strong midfield duo centrally and three young forwards supporting Benzema up front. It is an exciting looking side. Liverpool have more experienced players especially in Gerrard and Kuyt. They also have the excellent Lavezzi up front. The movement and pace of the Arsenal offence was the key and they eventually got the better of the Liverpool defence to lead 1-0 but they failed to convert any more chances and their weakened defence slipped up to provide Liverpool with a point after Lavezzi nipped in ahead of Jenkinson to poke home.

Manchester United vs Inter Milan

My match

Tottenham Hotspur 2 - 2 Bayern Munich
Robben --------------------- Reus
VdV -------------------------- Gomez

Top entertainment at WHL between two very attacking sides. Bayern look the better balanced, I would have preferred to see Parker alongside Busquets to add to the cover for the Spurs back four. As such, Bayern worked themselves into a winning position at 2-1 but oddly had only two players on the bench, one of them a keeper, and ultimately, being early in the season when full match fitness is still to be obtained, Spurs were able to find an equaliser against a tiring Bayern side late on.

AC Milan 0 - 0 Manchester City

Two well balanced sides, both with excellent defences and attacks. Today saw the defences on top as both sides struggled to gain territorial advantage and create goal scoring opportinuties. Credit for that goes to the combative midfield combinations on both sides who were effective at breaking up play. Drogba threatened for the home side to make a breakthrough but gound Joe Hart in good form to keep him out. The visitors worked hard to give their strikers opportunities but the well marshalled Milan defence also held firm.

Barcelona 4-1 Juventus
Villa, Messi, Xavi, Iniesta
Cavani

Barcelona eased to victory against a Juventus side brave, or naive, enough to deploy an attacking formation at the Nou Camp. Despite the lack of transfers from Fluxy, Barcelona are still the team to beat in the league and showed their class as they raced two-goals in front within 10 minutes. David Villa made room for himself before steering a shot past Buffon, before Messi doubled the advantage having made a mockery of Grosso, defending on the wrong side. Edinson Cavani received little service up front due to Juventus' inferiority in midfield but halved the deficit just before half-time, heading home a deep Gervinho cross. Yet Barcelona were just as comfortable in the second half and added 2 more goals, midfielders Xavi and Iniesta scoring.

=====

Real Madrid 1-0 Chelsea
Aguero

Pav will be relieved to have emerged from this game with a win after Kamran's Chelsea gave them more than a run for their money. Chelsea's attack is dangerous and they threatened to breach Madrid's defence on many occasions, but Ramos and Pepe particularly impressed. The hosts going forward also have a wealth of quality at their disposal and scored the only goal of the game after a disastrous blunder from reserve goalkeeper Hilario. Ronaldo worked the ball down the wing before cutting inside. The Portuguese squared it to Aguero, who produced a tame shot straight at Hilario. The inexperienced goalkeeper was horribly out of position and allowed the ball to squirm horribly under his body and into the net. Chelsea did not really look like getting back into the game, despite shakiness from Madrid's reserve keepr, Carlo Cudicini, who unconvincingly flapped at a few crosses.

=====

Arsenal 1-0 Liverpool
Neymar

Another tight game ended with Arsenal edging to victory over a poor Liverpool side. Neither side's defence are particularly stubborn, which should have led to a goalfest. However, Arsenal's midfield controlled the tempo of the game and were more than happy to be patient in possession. If they had applied more pressure, it would have been likely the score would be less flattering for Liverpool. Arsenal's front-four are full of pace, skill and attacking potency and it was Neymar who scored the Gunners' only goal, rounding Otamendi before stroking past Friedel. FootballCrazy's side could do with reinforcement, particularly at the back. Dirk Kuyt also looked horribly out of depth.

=====

Tottenham 1-2 Bayern Munich
Robben
Ribéry, Modric

Despite a goal from former winger Arjen Robben, Bayern Munich stunned White Hart Lane with a professional performance and important win. Spurs fielded an overly-attacking side, leaving Busquets with little support. Bayern's midfield is one of the strongest in the league and they took full advantage of an over-zealous Spurs side, dominating possession and the play. It began promisingly for YI as his side actually broke the deadlock. After a punt forward from Parker, Boateng had plenty of time to clear yet horribly miscued a belated clearance straight to Arjen Robben, who composed himself before drilling past Neuer. Instead of reverting to a more defensive formation, Spurs continued to press and left their defence terribly exposed. Modric in particular thrived on the acres of room he was given and in a quick counter-attack, the Croat's incisive pass was met by Ribéry, who ghosted past a statuesque Ekotto. The French winger poked the ball home and put his side on level terms. Tottenham were vulnerable now, but Bayern were only just clicking into gear. Modric's sublime chipped pass into Gomez was nodded back to him. Having eluded Busquets, Modric fired past Reina from 20-yards and gave his side the win.

=====

AC Milan 0-1 Manchester City
Tevez

Pull's decision to field an offensive side looked a master-stroke as City narrowly beat AC Milan at the San Siro in a very good win. Fisher has improved Milan and they were dogged and resilient throughout the game, heckling City's midfield. The decision to go 4-4-2 looked particularly astute as widemen Nasri and di Maria gave their respective fullbacks a torrid time. Zambrotta particularly struggled to deal with di Maria's tricky nature and pace, and Tevez scored the only goal of the game after fantastic work from his compatriot. Italian defender Zambrotta was becoming quickly impatient at his inability to stop di Maria, and lunged in to a challenge. The Argentine showed amazingly quick feet and vision as he flicked the ball over Zambrotta's tackle, before volleying a truly stunning cross into Tevez who glanced past Abbiati.

Barcelona 2-1 Juventus
Messi, Iniesta;Cavani

As much as Juve want to make a game of this one I don't see it happening. Walcott and Gervinho aren't the best players in the world at the best of times although their pace is enough to trouble the Barcelona defence who aren't the best with defensive matters and aren't really covered by Mascherano. However, this is Barcelona so they will always create enough chances to win matches. I like the signing of Cavani for Juve. He will get them plenty of goals.

Madrid 1-0 Chelsea
Higuain

Madrid are a solid enough side although they are definitely better down the right than the left. I'm not convinced by Luiz and Terry as the CB partnership as Luiz has shown me that he is incompetent in defence at times. My advice to Kam is to drop Torres, play Podolski up front and put Young on the wing. That will win him games.

Arsenal 2-0 Liverpool
Gotze, Benzema

This Arsenal team is much improved on what Hero started with. The acquisitons of BBB, Coentrao and Vidal have made them strong at the back although a RB is needed. I think Liverpool are lacking a bit up front. I don't see Lavezzi as an out-and-out striker; he's more suited to the wing.

Man Utd 2-1 Inter Milan
Nani x2; Chivu

Man Utd are a solid team in all areas of the park. I think they have fantastic pace up front with Valencia and Nani to cause an old Inter defence a lot of problems. Nani is the main man in this game who nets 2 goals for the Reds. A trademark Chivu free-kick provides a consolation for Inter.

AC 0-0 City

I can't separate these two teams. AC should consider putting Gaitan on the wing and dropping Robinho or Pato although they lack a top CM to replace him with. City should consider switching Nasri (who is out of form) with Johnson who has enough pace to trouble any defence all day long. They also have 2 main strikers up front which leads to a couple of arguments. Perhaps play Tevez behind RVP but not beside him.

Barcelona 3-1 Juventus
Sanchez (3): Matri

The away were set up with an attacking formation. However, against Barcelona at the Nou Camp was a risk that backfired and they were punished via Alexis Sanchez who scored a great hat-trick. Matri scored late on but a consolation was all it was.

===
Arsenal 1-1 Liverpool
Neymar: Bastos

Arsenal's excellent attack were met with an all round solid team in the shape of Liverpool at The Emirates. The away side started well with Michel Bastos running rings around Jenkinson who didn't know where he was. It was Bastos who put the away side in front with a terrific thunderbolt of a shot from 30 yards. However, the home side have an excellent attack and equalised soon after through Neymar.

===
Man Utd 1-0 Inter Milan
T. Silva

Tricky match for the hosts but in the end were worthy of a win through Thiago Silva's deflected effort from the edge of the area. Forlan back at his old club was lively and had excellent movement and also did have the ball in the back of the net but was correctly ruled out for offside.

===
Tottenham 0-2 Bayern Munich
Gomez (2)

The away side were the better of the teams here and were almost completely dominant. The home side are good but on this occasion, the away side were better and came away with the win thanks to Gomez who bagged a goal either side of half time.

===
AC Milan 0-0 Man City

Home side were set up well to counter Man City and put in the effort to thwart them. Tevez had a great swerving effort from 25 yards which Abbiati did brilliantly to save and at the other end, Nicolas Gaitan headed straight at Hart but in the end, nobody was able to make the breakthrough.

Barcelona 2-1 Juventus
Messi,Villa ;Cavani

I’d like to see how the manager of Barca takes the team forward, yes it’s an exceptionally gifted team but at present it’s pretty much painting by numbers to get the win. Juventus have signed a class striker up front but he needs better support from his midfield, think if they had a pair of wingers that could look up they could have snatched something from this game.

Madrid 1-0 Chelsea
Aguero

Chelsea have a few players that have just not been on form for a while (Torres) or look a bit dodgy at times (Luiz), Madrid down the right hand side look frighteningly good and it’s from there they get the win.

Man Utd 2-0 Inter Milan
Ibrahimovic, Kaka.

Not keen at all on Forlan alone up front, he’s not in form at all in RL and up against the behemoth partnership of Vidic and Silva there’s only one winner. If Inter could bring in a more inform striker they could put a few past teams.

AC 0-1 City
RVP

Close game between the two clubs but giving the win to City as across the park on like for like players they have the slightly superior team.

Tottenham 1-1 Bayern Munich
VDV ; Gomez

Quite an evenly matched game, the battle in midfield between Busquets, Parker and VDV versus Schweinsteiger, Modric and Ozil sounds mouth watering as I’d rate those as the best midfields after Barca. Feel that Spurs could still improve, Bale’s out of place going back to his original position of LB and Adebayor just doesn’t cut the mustard as much as other strikers in the league. Bayern concede late in the game when their players tired and they couldnt provide subs.

Fantasy European League™ - Round 1 Empty Re: Fantasy European League™ - Round 1

Post by kamran Thu 23 Feb 2012, 12:10 pm

Barcelona 3 - 1 Juventus
Messi (2) --------- Cavani
Sanchez

Barcelona are a tough proposition for any team but at home, they are very hard to beat. Even though Barca havent made any deals, they still manage to dominate teams and that was the case against a very much improved Juve side. Iniesta was the unsung hero as he created all 3 goals. Sanchez was proving to be a real handful too. To be honest Juve created some great chances in the final third but failed to make the keeper save. It was Cavani and Matri combo that pulled a goal back and prove that Barca are not durable. Worthy winners Barca.
-------------
Arsenal 2 - 1 Liverpool
Benzema --- Ganso
Muller

Arsenal started the brighter and scored early on with Goetze finding Benzema and he rifled the ball past the beaten keeper. Arsenal dominated the midfield battle as the game went on created more clear-cut chances. Muller scored the 2nd straight after half time and Liverpool looked dead and buried. However, Arsenal dropped back and let Liverpool attack which wasn't a great idea. Arsenal's defence was under attack as Jenkinson was beaten with easy repeatedly by Kuyt and Lavezzi and it was the same two that combined to let in Ganso and he shot low to get a goal back. Arsenal were against the ropes now and their defence can't handle the Liverpool attack. Lavezzi hit the post and finally Arsenal held on to all 3 points.
-----------------
Man Utd 2 - 1 Inter Milan
Ibrahimovic --- Sneijder
Wellbeck

Not the best game to be honest as it was a tale of both teams not wanted to concede rather than going for the win. However, a sublime skill be Ibra who nutmegged Juan and smashed a 20 yarder past the keeper gave the game a kick up the arse. With 20mins left Inter started to push up and it was Sneijder's low drive that gave Inter a deserved draw. Seconds left, Wellbeck was put clear and he calmy slotted home for the winner. Inter players looked gutted at the end.
--------------
Tottenham 1 - 2 Bayern Munich
Robben ---------- Schweinstiger, Ozil

Tottenham played against a resilient Munich defence that mopped up most of the threats caused by Spurs. Ekotto found it difficult to contain Ribery and needed Busquets/ Parker to help him which made space for Schweinstiger and he scored a peach of a goal for it. The same combo combined again but this time Ribery found Ozil who lobbed the keeper for the second. Tottenham suddenly became more attacking and looked a the more dangerous side. Adebayor had some glorious chances to score but his shots were off the mark. It was Robben that charged through the Bayern defence and curled a beauty past Neuer. Unfortunately, Spurs couldnt provide an equaliser as time was very little and the Bayern defence stayed strong.
--------------------
AC Milan 0 - 1 Man City
----------------- Van Persie

Not many chances came about in this game as both sets of defences were solid throughout. Van Bommel and Ramires had great battles with Yaya and Barry. However, the game changed once Ballotelli came on instantly made an impact with a clever skill and put through Van Persie, who smashed it past Abbiati. Milan struck the crossbar immediately when Drogba's freekick hit the underside of the bar.

Barcelona 1-0 Juventus
Sanchez
Juve have a strong defence and good keeper but lacking in midfield. Barca eventually get a goal.

Madrid 1-1 Chelsea
Silva --------Rooney
2 pretty much evenly matched teams. Chelsea would have got the win with a better keeper.

Arsenal 2-0 Liverpool
Benzema, Neymar
Arsenal have a too strong attack for Liverpool.

Man Utd 0-1 Inter Milan
----------------Hazard
Milan play brilliantly on the wings and overpower Utd there. That is where this game is won.

AC Milan 0-1 Man City
-----------------Tevez
Just feel City have the better team and play well with eachother.

Fantasy European League™ - Round 1 Empty Re: Fantasy European League™ - Round 1

Post by pullthestrings Thu 23 Feb 2012, 2:03 pm

Barcelona 3 - 1 Juventus
Villa, Sanchez, Pedro ; Krasic

Pretty dominant display from one of the early title contenders. The Barca midfield is set up in such a way to swamp Juve - I think Marchisio would be a lamb to the slaughter in there. Overall too attacking from the visitors, they'll create chances for sure but Barca have the ability to punish any side on the counter.

====

Real Madrid 2 - 1 Chelsea
Silva, Pepe ; Rooney

A difficult one to call, Chelsea certainly gave it a good effort. Pretty even for most of the game, with rustiness apparent in both sides. Rooney is a great addition, and Carrick and Jones are industrious. I think Chelsea will be a little shaky at the set piece, and Pepe pops up from defence to grab a goal.

===

Arsenal 0 - 0 Liverpool

Nothing to choose from here. Sparks of brilliance from individuals but they were unable to convert the chances through some excellent goalkeeping displays. Arsenal's defence struggled to keep up with the pacey Liverpool attack but held their nerve for the draw.

===

Man Utd 1 - 0 Inter Milan
Vidic

I like the balance of the Utd side with a very strong backbone. Inter will work hard in midfield with Cambiasso acting like a hungry hippo. Hazard and Cazorla cause problems for Utd's full backs but Forlan is unable to convert. A headed goal from a corner make the difference.

===

Spurs 2 - 1 Bayern
VdV, Olic ; Ozil

A close game, Bayern were creating carnage initially until Spurs's defence eventually calmed down. I'd be worried about Bale and Ekotto bombing forward and leaving Hummels and King exposed for Ozil to romp through. Fresh legs from the home side and they take the game to Bayern, grabbing a late winner through Olic. Spurs get a bit lucky here.

Fantasy European League™ - Round 1 Empty Re: Fantasy European League™ - Round 1

Real Madrid 2 - 0 Chelsea FC
Higuain [2]

Two solid teams here, but the Chelsea back four are bombarded all afternoon with attacking play from Madrid. A strong MOTM performance from Higuain with a brace seals the win.

Arsenal 0 - 1 Liverpool
Lavezzi

A weak Arsenal backline, struggles to contain the attacking threat from Liverpool with Ganso pulling the strings in midfield. His influence leads to a clever pass through the defence to set up Lavezzi's goal.

Man Utd 2 - 1 Bayern Munich
Nani, Ibrahimovic - Hazard

I love the complexion of the Man Utd team, and they will create a lot chances in this games. However I like the creativity of the Bayern team, so they won't come away without a fight.

AC Milan 1 - 2 Man City
Drogba - Van Persie, Di Maria

The decision to put Gaitan in midfield in alone, is a bit of mistake IMO. But the solid formation of City pays dividends as it boxes in the Milan team and limits their chances to attack. A goal from Van Persie, and then one from Drogba puts the game on a knife's edge, but the winner comes from Di Maria with twenty minutes to go.

Tottenham Hotspur 2 - 3 Bayern Munich
Adebayor, Bale - Ozil, Gomez, Modric

Modric comes back to haunt his old club as I can't see past Bayern to win this. The choice of Ekotto at left back is a mistake in my book as to me he is a left back, and putting Bale at left back shackles his attacking ability, despite his oppurtunitic goal.

Real Madrid 2-0 Chelsea FC
Aguero,Higauin
MAdrid were all round to strong, teh DMs and teh defense frustrated rooney all night long a nulified him teh widemen fared better but teh servie to torres was good but torres wasnt, carrick and jones were run ragged by aguero and luiz and terry couldnt countain higauin and Real got an easy 2-0 win
Arsenal 2-1 Liverpool
Neymar, Bastos
Benzema
Arsenal attack to strong in teh end, stevie G and M'Villa aregood but 3 men is to much and get over run, benzema is world class and nets a brace, liverpools ate mostly contained but bastos destroys jenkinson down teh wing and get a goal

Man Utd 1-0 Inter Milan
Ibrahimovic

Unted are generally stroner a close game wiht the DM dominating pla but uniteds strongers attack pays dividence in teh end and thye nick a good win

AC Milan0-2 Man City
RVP ,Tevez
Man C have teh better of play and get a good win, the DM lay effectivly and stup down teh middle of teh park while citys skille FBs take care of teh wings,drogba was someone isolated,at times tezev and RVP both score,nasri as a wide man dosnt suit him and was ineffective, but di maria was city main attacking threat and created both gols

Tottenham Hotspur 1 -1 Bayern Munich
Adebayor Gomez
the best agme of teh round, even and fierce midfield battl epresents no clear winner but gomez recives a thruogh ball early on an dlslots it home, but bale and robben dominate the left hand side and spurs score late on through and adebayor header

I scored 13 goals to 7.
How does that work to 1-1?

How do you propose I calculate results? Would like to get it right now so I'm consistent over the season.

You had 11/9 = 1.22222 = rounded to 1
FC had 6/9 = 0.66667 = rounded to 1

You had three more wins than FC, thus not enough for the extra goal.

We did the total number of votes divided by two approach.
So 9 votes : 4.5

Then divide the total number of goals by this ratio

So 12 = 2.7ish
7 = 1.7ish
Then round down.
2:1

This is Hodgey's method:

If there are 12 predictions, minus 2 (the 2 managers of the respective sides) and divide by goals scored in predictions. Then add a goal if more than half of the predictions are wins for one side.

We'll canvas opinion in the morning. I want to get it right going forward.

Macclads - surely your method always skews the goals because they are divided by a smaller number

For example, for Barca they scored 25 goals. Divided by 5 (10 votes divided by 2) gives 5 goals.

No one voted for Barca to score 5 so seems unrealistic.

As I said.. damned if I do, damned if I don't.

If I include Cherries predictions you're unhappy, if I don't include them Macclads is unhappy. I would prefer people just got their predictions in time to avoid confusion but as it's the first week I was a bit lenient.

Overall, the result of 2-1 is a more accurate reflection of the predictions that 1-1. It was tight, but Arsenal kept picking up narrow wins. Sorry FC.
