Re: Belgian boxers
Im sure you could dig a Belgian boxer or two out of the WBO rankings but as far as I know I havent heard of one being a world champion.

Never a world champion, DeLarge was an Olympic champion but did SFA in the pros.

In fact - thats a worse pro resume than Audley.
Although maybe starting with a 10 rounder isn't the most sensible of plans

WBC Youth Title? More commissioning fees no doubt.
The only Belgian boxer I'm aware of is the bloke to first KO'd Errol Christie. Cant recall his name without looking though. LHW I believe. 1st round KO.

I think you need to see when that article was published, September 2010.
He was beaten by Jamie McDonnell and was knocked out by another fighter.
He is pretty good but in bit sure he is world title material for as log as the division is as talented as it is now

I read it a couple of years ago - hadn't bothered to follow his career (seems I didn't miss much) - but it seemed like only yesterday when I read it - so I doubted it would all have fallen apart quite so spectacularly. Can't believe its 2010.
Although I'd have thought a decent promotion would have gifted him a WBO by now...

Re: Belgian boxers
Gustav Roth was a Light-Heavyweight title claimant in the thirties; if my memory serves me correctly, he was from Belgium. Very tenuous link as his claims weren't taken all that seriously outside of Europe - but then again, I suppose that makes him no different to a host of 'titlists' in modern times!

Wasn't his supposed professional kickboxing record an absolute fabrication?

Ali faught a Belgian guy, Jean-Pierre Coopman. Pretty sure in a book I read about Ali that in that fight Coopman was drinking champaigne between rounds in his corner.

A fabrication? No way. I've personally watched him destroy the Thai champion, Kung Po and win the Kumite in Hong Kong. These were unsanctioned though, so probably didn't go on his official record

Re: Belgian boxers
Name confusion - his record was under his birth name van varunberger or something - he had a fair recrod 46 wins and 4 losses i think.
