Very cautious football at the moment, Danny Welbeck always seems to struggle as a lone striker and I would perhaps think about pushing Sturridge up with him and giving him a go centrally as he'd like to. With the two defensive covers you would have thought that would be okay.

Defensively poor at crucial times and offered nothing in the final third.
What annoyed me was the commentators talking about playing Gerrard behind Welbeck and that it was something that hadn't been tried before. Granted, he's never played behind Welbeck, but he's played their behind Rooney and offered nothing of note. A pointless tactical experiment.

Re: England V Holland Match Thread
we looked better when gerrard went off in fairness.
i think we did offer abit in the final third- well we scored 2 goals!
i agree we needed more invention there. defensively we were good for alot of the game, but against that dutch side you have to be on top top defensive form or score more, we couldnt quite do either.
The dutch looked better granted- however i allways thought we had a threat- if we had a roony, scholes or wiltshire in the team i think we would offer alot more final third

Depends.
I think in the press he is widely regarded as the best player England have, however from a fans point of view he's done very little for England in quite some time, and has been very injury prone.
I don't see how Gerrard would get in the team over a fully fit Wilshere.

Re: England V Holland Match Thread
It is hardly worth opening a topic for as it was a meaningless friendly match. It only mattered to the FA so they could make some money.

Maybe England games that mean something. These friendly games have the same value as pre-season friendly games. They could call it England XI vs Netherlands XI.

Sorry Lorus but if these games mean nothing then it should'nt concern you that people talk about them. In Holland, it meant alot to them even if their media were overly arrogant.

Re: England V Holland Match Thread
England were appaling last night.
Welbeck, Walcott & Sturridge are not international standard, they have absolutely no technical ability that sets the top players apart from the rest. Their passing, finishing and general all round perception of the game is embarrasingly bad for professional footballers. Why does Sturridge think that he must perform a trick when attempting every single shot, run or passing move? The amount of times these three individuals lose the ball is shocking and at this level you get punished by quality, technically gifted players like Robben, Sneijder, Xavi & Iniesta.
Why we continue to play Gareth 'Crab' Barry is simply beyond me. He offers absolutely nothing other than slowing the play down and passing sideways so that another player is forced to create an opening. Baines is simply not a good enough defender to replace Ashley Cole and was at fault for two goals along with Smalling. Without Rooney we have no quality in front of goal and for some reason our whole philosophy is now leaning towards having all these wingers on the pitch.......all of which have no quality in the final third in delivering a ball to their man and if we viewed their composure stats on FM2012, it would read in the single digit. The fact it took a centre back (Cahill) to show Welbeck the ability to run off your marker and attempt to run in behind the centre back says it all.
If you disagree with the above then you are delusional. Shocking display by England.

Gerrard should retire after the euros. England have made him look foolish by picking Scott Parker as captain ahead of him and now that brainless moron Pierce has got him injured by playing him form the start after he has gone 120 mins in the CC final only last Sun. England fans don't deserve to have Gerrard playing for them because of the stick he gets off them he should retire and when the England fans and media are crowing about how average Scott Parker is in six months time and how much they want Gerrard back he should not go back.

Yes and I really hope he retires after the euros so he can play for his club where he is treated right. England is a circus and the sooner he gets out the better form a Liverpool point of view.

think i would take a 2-3 loss to one of the top 3 teams in the world than a 1-1 draw with 29th ranked czech's.

Re: England V Holland Match Thread
Don't mind him. An Irish man supporting an English club is just a load of rubbish. England's defending was dreadful at key times yesterday. Whatever else you can say about Ireland and the FAI (CEO gets 400K a year!) Ireland wouldn't concede cheap goals like that.
The FA forced Capello out and it wasn't right. They suffer from unrealistic expectation and a league that places demands on their players. While you may say, the league is full of foreigners, it's a tougher league to play in than La Liga for example. Playing for Madrid/Barca in Spain is like training for the Olympics. You know you only have to peak for a few times in a season and can be mediocre for the rest of the time. In the premiership, you have to be on your game for 80-90% of the time.

It was really odd playing Gerrard after he had only recently done 120 minutes, hasn't been back from injury for too long and was played in a position that requires more running than the one he has been playing for Liverpool since he returned.

Gerrard is a bum and has been a bum for years now. Should've been dropped as part of the disgrace that was the 2010 World Cup performance (of pretty much the whole team). He's Mr MOTD - only looks good in highlight reels, and isn't up to international standard (and hasn't been for a while). Spraying hollywood passes around when 1 in 10 reaches is target is fine for looking good at 10.30pm on a Saturday but top international teams just laugh at him - Xavi, Iniesta, Fabregas just giggle their way around never passing it more than 10 yards or so, achieving ten times more success in the process.

if wilshire isnt fit for the euros(which i dont think he will be) scholes must be brought in centre mid, if not rooney may have to play deeper to create!
i cant think of any one else with that invention or control of pass to dictate the centre mid. gerrard isnt the player-even lampard would be a better bet!

That has to be the biggest pile of Poopie I have ever read in my life. Xavi and Iniesta just laugh around him do they? Like when Liverpool knocked them out of the Champions League in 07 you mean? There's is more than one way to play football, you are aware of that?
The 'MOTD player' and 'holywood ball' accusations is just typical of people who don't even bother to watch Steven Gerrard play. They just get annoyed with the hype around him and try a be 'internet cool' by playing devil's advocate. Capello, Dalglish, Sven, Benitez all seem to have different opinion to you, but sure what have they got eh? 'cept maybe numerous major trophies all over Europe, but sure what would people like that know. They'll obviously bow to someone who uses MOTD as their football scounting resource.
Steven Gerrard has carried some very average Liverpool teams on his back for years, and despite temption from elsewhere he remained bloody loyal. He's was England's best player at the 2010 WC, by a country mile (not saying much).
He's not the player he once was, but has more strings to his bow than the one dimensional Scott Parker. It was a slap in the face not to give him the England captaincy, but as per usual Gerrard will say nothing and carry on regardless, depsite the fact it'll probably chop a few years of his career. Will he get the respect he derserves from the FA and England fans? Like hell he will.
Am I a Liverpool fan? Yep. Am I bias? Yep but I would guareentee any objective and geniune football opinion on Steven Gerrard is likely to be alot closer to my opinion than that colossal pile of dog crap you just spewed onto this website. Typical though.

gerrard single handedly won a cl final- lets be honest- the guy deserevs massive repsect as a club player, just not as an international- because he has never really worked out for us!- maybe not really his fault- however not the time to blame anyone or any system, time to get a fresh squad in- out with the old in with the new
