Murray Wins. Who Is It Good For?
Its not often I find myself cheering for Murray against Djokovic but I did today and it worked. Of course this win is good for Murray. But who else is it good for? Nadal? Federer? Del Potro? Djokovic? Or anyone else?

It was good for me as it saved me the most un-thankful task in impregnating Judy Murray.

Its good for Andy, certainly for Nadal as Novak fails to defend and the gap between 1 and 2 gets slightly smaller in points. Bottom line as I have been predicting, Murray and Novak is the matchup that will dominate the toor over next year or 2. Murray is much closer to matching Novak than Roger or Rafa right now.

Don't think it will bother Djokovic too much. It was very unlikely he was going to go until June unbeaten this year. For Murray it's encouraging but does not mean that he is up there yet. Losing again to Djokovic would have been disappointing but had he lost from 6-2 5-2 up and having served for the match the negative impact could have been huge. The positive thing was he didn't let that get to him had an excellent next service game.
Overall I suppose it shows to others that Djokovic is beatable but that they will still have to play at a consistent very high level to do so.

C'106. Quite right. Obviously this is good for Andy and you could say it's not that bad for Nole either. Takes a bit of pressure of him and saves his legs for bigger tests ahead.

Calder, I think it is good for Murray, this year after losing the AO he didn't go into a swoon like he did in the past. Especially, like how Murray served for most of the match. For Novak frankly I think mentally he wasn't still all there this tournament. Not that he didn't try, I just don't think he was as hungry this time in Dubai like he was the last three years. And he had a terrible day on the forehand side, something that doesn't happen that often anymore.

Murray of course - it will also help him feel that he's made a few right decisions this year, which always helps going forward.

Re: Murray Wins. Who Is It Good For?
Not that much of an issue for Djokovic, he's aware that when he plays Murray and they both play as well as they can it's a very close match up. I'm sure he'd still back himself to beat Murray in a slam.
For Murray I really think it's huge. He has been saying the gaps closing and he's backed it up. He'll go into his next match with Djokovic with huge belief. Remember, it was initially outside of the slams that Novak turned the Rafa rivalry around, and it was the belief he gained from those wins that led him to the subsequent slam final victories against Rafa.
It's big for Rafa and Roger too, but it's huge for Murray I think.

Re: Murray Wins. Who Is It Good For?
Obviously it's very important for Murray, as it suggests the work with Lendl is paying off (nearly 75% first serves in and winning 88% of points behind it).
Doesn't do any real harm for Djokovic, as he wasn't going to get to RG unbeaten again this season, although obviously he'd have liked to win and to keep his apparent grip on the ATP.
Probably is a slight positive for the other top guys as well - Djokovic had an off-day by most accounts, which will certainly give Nadal and Federer hope next time they face him.

Surely he would have known before Lendl's intervention that he had to up his 1st serve %!

Lendl has secret magical powers he can transmit them by telepathy.

I suppose if Novak had won, the perspective would have been different for some. I wish I was able to watch.

Re: Murray Wins. Who Is It Good For?
Of course it is a very good win for Andy Murray. The first player to beat Novak in 2012 and in their previous encounter he came very close as well to beating him so shows that he is capable of competing with and beating him. Of course it is just an ATP500 event but Novak was intent on winning here as it keeps momentum going and builds an aura of invincibility like he built up last year. Whilst the win for Andy is a boost in confidence and self-belief and re-inforces belief that he can beat the very best player in the world. All in all a good day for Andy but would have much rather have been a win in a slam match obviously.

Re: Murray Wins. Who Is It Good For?
He looked good craig, i keep telling people that as good as Fed and Nadal are the rivalry that will drive the tour over the next couple years will be Novak and Murray. People are going to continue to underestimate Murray until he wins that slam, which will happen. All he needs is to get a little tighter with the forehand, the second serve, and to maintain his focus. Still on these quick courts Roger is serving amazingly. Nothing I have seen from Murray this year though dissuades me from belief that he is going to get that slam and probably soon.

Re: Murray Wins. Who Is It Good For?
Simple answer...it's good for tennis!
Djokovic was starting to get to Federer levels of arrogance. In particular I found his 'Neanderthal shirt-ripping & chest-thumping' antics at the end of the Australian Open final nauseating, tasteless & embarrassing. Surely even Djokovic fans were (or should have been) uncomfortable with that unsportsman like behaviour.
Although not an extremely important tournament it's extremely gratifying to see Djokovic brought down a peg or two.
Whether it means anything in the bigger picture & for the grand slams remains to be seen!

What about Nadal's fist pumping, arm stuffing gesture?
Does it looks graceful or posh to you?

Re: Murray Wins. Who Is It Good For?
I had absolutely no problem with Djokovic's celebrations in Melbourne. He'd won 2 matches he could have lost showing an incredible will to win, and then was very sporting with Nadal... What he does afterwards is up to him!
I think to be as good as these guys are you have to have a bit of arrogance. All the top athletes have that posture that indicates they think they are the best. I think its tough to reach the very top without it.
Nadal's fist pumping, Djokovic's shirt ripping... Have no problem with any of it. This is top level professional sport. Being the best, believing your the best and showing it to anyone who's watching is all part of it.
As a Murray fan, I wish he had a bit more arrogance!

The guys nearly all play the same game nowadays so you want them to express themselves differently as long as they don't break the rules.
