'Night of the Dragon' Report
Robbie Turley triumphs in 'Night of the Dragon'
by Rob Day
The Motorpoint Arena was again the venue for championship boxing in Cardiff last night, in a show billed ‘Night of the Dragon’. Cardiff Promotions and Sport and Stage Ltd gave the fans a good bill of boxing in a further celebration of St.David’s Day.
Headlining the show was Cefn Fforest’s Robbie Turley, who got back to winning ways in an entertaining and competitive clash with Scotland’s Gavin Reid, for the vacant Celtic super-bantamweight title.
The fight opened at a frantic pace with both men looking to impose themself on the other. Turley, as is his style, used good head movement to prove elusive at times. Throughout the bout Turley picked his shots well, while Reid looked to employ a sound jab.
In the third round it was a left hook on the ropes by Turley that looked to have momentarily stunned Reid and a barrage of head and body shots followed as the Welshman tried to capitalise. In the fifth round a lot of blood was coming from Reid’s nose as Turley’s left hooks did more damage.
Reid was looking bruised on the cheeks and in the sixth round had blood coming from the left ear. It looked as though part of the ear had torn off or been badly cut. The doctor advised that the bout be halted and Turley was crowned the champion in front of his fans. Turley was in control of the fight though at times was a bit too eager to land the big shots.
Turley’s record improves to 11- 4 while Reid’s falls to 6-12-1.
Fight of the Night was between two unbeaten welterweight prospects, Dai Jones of Blackwood and Gareth Piper of Cardiff.
