Sachin on the Brink
He's currently 95 not out against Bangladesh.
Can he finally break the hoodoo and get that 100th 100?!?

99 now, and he's off strike. Plenty of time though.
Sachin certainly deserves it. Part of me thinks that 99 would be a nice poignant number, a bit like Bradman's 99.94 average.

2 dot balls at the end of the 43rd for Sachin. Tension at the ground must be epic

Re: Sachin on the Brink
Any feel that it is a little anti climax? Against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup!
Of course, it is very, very, very unlikely that I will ever get to see anyone get close to scoring a hundred hundreds again so maybe it isn't! Well played Sachin, what a career! Now he has got it, does this push him closer to retirement though?

It was his maiden ODI hundred against Bangladesh as well interestingly. I'd imagine he will retire once he gets to 50 ODI hundreds as well, he's on 49 now isn't he?

Well, the monkey is off his back at last. Well done Sachin!. Hope he can now go back to a sense of the normal in his life.

Fabulous record, what a player. Very pleased for him, and almost as pleased that the media circus following his every step will now ease off a little!
Well done, Little Master.

Tendulkar goes for 114. a Rather slow knock, but important in the sense that he can play freely hereafter.

Re: Sachin on the Brink
Well there it is at last : I suppose one could see it as a bit of an anti-climax coming in a minor tournament against Bangladesh but it is a mighty achievement in any case.
Some thinking he may now retire? I doubt it , especially after Dravid has gone I think he'll probably want to go on another year so the changeover is staggered , for his team's sake. He may also able to play with a bit more freedom : whatever he said , or even thought himself , the constant media fuss must have had some effect on him while the "milestone" was constantly postponed ...
I would like to see him now enjoy an "Indian Summer" (sorry!) before he quits. Though hopefully he won't bury England under too big a mountain of runs

Re: Sachin on the Brink
Same boat as you, Alfie, I believe he will stay on in Tests at least, though we may see him retire from ODI's.
It'd be nice for him to hang around for another year, score a hatful of runs (except against us) and then retire.

Don't think Tendulkar is thinking of retiring, as yet. Hope to see him bat and score big runs for India for some more time.

Quite a remarkable achievement from a remarkable cricketer. 100 International hundreds, like the Don's average, will never ever be matched nor surpassed.
I'd guess Tendulkar will want to smash Pakistan around in the next two matches and end this ODI career.

I'd be very very surprised if 100 international hundreds wasn't achieved at least twice more in my lifetime.
Which is not to take anything away from the guy who got there first.

I can. A player debuts at 20 and retires at 38, 19 full seasons of international cricket with typically 15 tests, 12 T20s and 25 ODIs per season. Say 1 T20 hundred, 4 tests and 5 ODI hundreds... You're almost there.

Re: Sachin on the Brink
It takes a very special player to do that consistently across such a time frame, though, and a very lucky one to not get injured at all. It is achievable when you put it like that, but there are so many factors that could alter those chances.
Re: Sachin on the Brink
Great achievement and not one that I think we'll see emulated. Where does Sachin stand in the list of great batsmen? Well, obviously pretty high. Angus Fraser once said that Lara and Tendulkar were the best two batsman he bowled at.
He put Lara slightly ahead of Sachin. Fraser said if you bowled a good ball to Sachin he would block it. But bowl a good ball to Lara and he was just as likely to hit it for four.
Two great players and you have to admire Sachin's fitness and the fact that every time he goes to the crease he is "batting for a billion".

Perhaps this ton of tons has to come in a defeat. Perhaps that in some sense signify Tendulkar, someone who stood up during many a tough moment. This was not quite a stand alone effort like the countless ones he produced over the years, but.......

India lose to Bangladesh! Does anyone truthfully believe India are the best in the World at ODIs? Not a chance. Plus, at the risk of being harboured bitter or jealous, what a selfish ton. Took about 140 balls. Sachin always plays for himself, not the team.Anyway, well done Sachin, unlikely to be bested unless...
Alistair Cook, he currently has 23 international centuries. He's currently aged 27, so let's assume he plays for another 10 years. 77 divided by 10 = 7.7 centuries needed per year for 10 years. That's actually quite achievable...

Grt achievement...maybe not the best batsmen ive seen in my opion but by far the most iconic!!The media spotlight n pressure on him is crazy n he deals wit h it otstandingly well.
Have to agree wid mike with regards to his feat being equalled at some stage in the future...Records r there to b broken n I hav seen it many times in sport, where seemingly impossible feats are equalled or bettered...For eg i remember Michael Johnson running 19.32 in d atlanta olympics which smashed the then world record by hlf a second. I thought i wud never see it bettered but then along came usain bolt. Never say Never!!

very well done sachin
no one else will do it, and also i think he will retire very soon, i have always thought that he will retire very soon after bagging the elusive hundred.

Re: Sachin on the Brink
Actually my first post was numerically illiterate, you "only" really need 6 tons a year over 17 years to get to 100 centuries. It will, indeed take a very special player to do it, but probably not more special than once in a generation. I probably have 2 generations at least to live...

hes unlikely to go past 35 in all formats
Hes averaging less than 4 centuries a year at the moment, and broke early career records to do that
He wont be getting in the T20 side any time soon even if Flower does favour 1 captain
Its unliley he wont have a t least one significant injury lay off
Its really very unlikely that Cook will get close to 100
As for Sachin it was hardly the fairytale way to get it but at least after a year of flaccid performances hes finally put this to rest. It should let him relax more now, the only worry being that hell switch off altogether and get even lazier.
He will go down as the greatest modern batsman, I just hope he doesnt hang around too long milking it.

Re: Sachin on the Brink
Not sure if seven international centuries a year is an easy feat, Duty81. Even the greatest batsmen have scoring droughts. Sachin went quite a long time in the mid-noughties without a Test 100, for instance.
I think with Dravid retiring India will want Sachin to go on for a while. He's hardly been out of form, scoring plenty of 50s. However, when you're chasing a milestone even 94 is seen as "a failure".

Re: Sachin on the Brink
I'm not suggesting it's easy to be fair. I'm suggesting at least one batsmen every 30 years from now on will manage it. Because let's face it, great though Tendulkar is (I disagree with Duty here), would you rank him as a 1 in 100 years player? Or do people like Bradman, Hammond, Hutton, Richards come close? In which case he is more "once in a generation" than "once in a lifetime".

You are mistaken, they won narrowly and that wasnt Tendulkars fault. They have however wiped the floor with SA before, winning by 67 runs....pity Smith ABD or Kallis werent a bit more selfish they couldve at least made a game of it.
By the way Cook wasnt even playing when England lot to Bangladesh, so quite what it proves about him I dont know

Back in the early '90s I remember reading one of Glenn Turner's books, documenting each of his 100 first class centuries. Just reading through that list was a monumental effort, let alone scoring the things.

Tendulkar's career S/R is 85, his S/R in this innings was 75. So yes he was partly to blame for India's defeat. The attack was hardly threatening, and he's destroyed them in the Test arena plenty of times.Peter Seabiscuit Wheeler wrote:Demon Racer wrote:Unless I'm mistaken Bangladesh wiped the floor with England during the 2011 World Cup, so people in glasshouse springs to mind.Duty281 wrote:India lose to Bangladesh! No I do remember that. 2005 wasn't it? More a shock result that one, one entirely unexpected like Pakistan losing to the Irish in '07. The thing is that this wasn't a shock result, not really. India are on a big slide in all formats.
