PC Trouble! Empty PC Trouble!

Post by Guest Mon Mar 19, 2012 9:07 pm

Over the weekend I got a nasty virus with the latest windows update.
The virus is sat in my c:windows/system32/driver file

This is stopping me connect to the internet. AVG & Malwarebytes pick up the virus but dont give the option to heal/remove.
Now, when I turn the on the PC it is asking me to log is as a different user! Anyways, I rang Dell and they want to charge me £120 to fix it as there is no warranty on the PC. (Its 2nd hand)

System restore doesnt work.

I cant reinstall XP from a CD as I dont have it. I have tried to do it manually from the i687 (or whatever its called) file, entered the product key and keep getting a 1722 error message. So that wont work.

As a last option I have the Windows Vista disks for the lap top. Can I simply install Vista on the PC to either replace XP, or run along side it?

Don't know if this helps at this stage, but when my PC had a virus I downloaded something called Hitman Pro which took it out for me when my anti-virus wasn't able to.

Maybe try a boot time scan if you can?

PC World charge £40 to put on the new OS, but you need to pay for the OS which is another £109.
They guy on the phone said it completely knackered as its now asking me to log in as a different user. Thanks for this windows update!

Malwarebytes should get it.

Have you run a full scan and then quarantined it? I had the same virus before.

i take it you tried running in safe mode and then did a factory reset/ system restore?

Thats the only thing I can think of.

Hmmm, well all I would suggest is try and run a boot time scan and see if you can quarantine the virus

Im running AVG and Malwarebytes in safe mode at the moment.
AVG is picking up the virus, but not giving the option to heal etc, only the option to close.

The user that it is asking me to log in when I turn on the pc has their own file (where you have administrator/user accounts)
That file is protected and it cant be scanned.

Installing Vista (which is on the lap top) wont work, as you can only use one product key per machine.

If you have the chance, borrow a computer and try to find out the name of the virus files. Then switch your computer on in safe mode and get rid of the files via processes in task manager. Worked for me when I had a similar virus about 18 months ago.

in what way does "system restore" not work? does it not do it, or is it restoring but not getting rid of the virus?

Yeah, cause the virus saves in the Win32 dll it's potected from sytem restores as the cpu thinks the file is part of the OS.

If i remember correctly, you need to disconnect from the internet. Turn your wireless off as that's one of the tirggers. This should allow Malwarebytes to find and kill it.

Once you've done that, do a registry clean up and defrag.

No luck, it needs windows completely reinstalled. The PC has been completely hacked as its asking me to log in as someone else when I first turn it on. (Someone trying to access my PC remotely.)

All sorted.
Got a Windows XP disk off someone on Facebook Cheap Shop, installed the drivers manually off the Dell web-site. Boom
