Enzo to have rematch Empty Enzo to have rematch

Post by Adam D Fri 30 Mar 2012, 11:08 pm

Enzo Maccarinelli has been ordered to a rematch against Shane McPhilbin for the British cruiserweight title.
Controversy surrounded the original fight when the bell to end the first round was sounded 47 seconds early.

Maccarinelli had been knocked down by title holder McPhilbin seconds earlier and was clearly hurt as he stood up.

Timekeeper Martin Fallon has since been suspended until 1 January 2013 by the British Boxing Board of Control, who have ordered a rematch before October.

Maccarinelli was also knocked down in the third round as McPhilbin continued to dominate the early exchanges.
But the 31-year-old former WBO cruiserweight champion recovered to take a unanimous points verdict, giving him his first British title of his career.
McPhilbin's manager, Carl Greaves, called for a rematch shortly after the judges' verdicts were given and the BBBofC have sanctioned the fight following an enquiry into the events of the first round.

The right procedure. What was Fallon on that night? You know it's time to hang 'em up when even the timekeepers are jumping in out of pity.

Has he explained why he made such a hopeless, awful, ridiculous, shameful mistake yet?

Its almost certainly cost McPhilbin the fight, I think suspended till 2013 is getting off lightly,I can't get my head round it, 47 seconds, its as if his rang the bell to save Enzo.
Even a kid learns how to tell the time its disgraceful.

Its been mentioned many times on here but its about time someone sat Enzo down and told him his times up,before he seriously gets hurt which no one wants to see.

Enzo to have rematch Empty Re: Enzo to have rematch

I thought boxrec news expressed it quite nicely.

The decision certainly cost McPhilbin the fight - but with a little more conditioning he should have won the fight any way. So when the rematch happens they'll be supporting Enzo anyway - because its hard to support a guy who isn't fully committed to the sport (McPhilbin) over someone who is (Enzo).

And that's the issue - I'm not advocating supporting Enzo on those grounds - but the guy does live and breathe the sport of boxing - and this could really end up detrimental to his health. He doesn't have much of a set of whiskers and he's taking needless damage.

On a different note - we could give Fallon an egg timer instead of a watch. Preferably a sand clock - because you can't ring the bell early under the reasoning that you misread your stopwatch.

However, without being facetious - he needs a life ban from the sport. You shouldn't have someone like him affecting the result of a fight.

Give him a Victorian one so he can take his place on only fools and horses as triggers protege.
